1st Time Freshwater Sump Design (feedback, please!)

I been discussing that with another person, my filter pad only last a few day, not sure if it's that much different than a sock. I did order 4 socks, will have 2 sets. I figure the sock may be easier to clean than the filter pads. I know the socks will overflow in my system once in awhile...

1st Time Freshwater Sump Design (feedback, please!)

Just to be clear, my minimal sump pictured above is an example of a bad design. I combined the prefilter/main filter together using a disposable filter pad, fine and course foam shown below: The problem I have, as organic material builds up, it can no longer support the 400-500 gph flow rate...

Understood. In the ceramic ring section, the water will flow over the top of the rings and the heater into the bioballs section. Remember that water will always take the path of less resistance. Can you visually see the heater? The last divider wall is useless, look at it closely. The divider...

    Big River South

In the winter, I turn down the heat to 13C during the day and at night, I need a heater. I am concerned about summertime, the tank is in a finished attic space. I may have to run an AC unit during heat waves, it can get 35C on hot days.

My heater died and the tank dropped to 18C (65F) overnight, my Tiger and Odessa barbs were not happy, four of them gave me the flipper:rolleyes: They were all roaming the bottom with no energy at all. So yea, I agree, get a heater.

1st Time Freshwater Sump Design (feedback, please!)

I agree with Colin. I am converting my sump to a fluidized bed filter recommended by cdelly. I also plan on switching to filter socks. They will plug up quickly but are easier to clean compared to foam sponges. I will have a few sets of the socks. You got 11 divider walls in your sump, you...

Where to find a 90 or 100 gallon aquarium and stand (no canopy) for a reasonable price Oh and how to you store your RO/DI water?

So your issue is with the higher cost of frameless low-iron tanks with filter/sump. On that, I agree. Old school framed tanks work for me. The OP was struggling with connecting a RO unit to the water supply under her sink, I doubt she would take on a DIY tank project. Which is why you...

Feel free to post an alternative frameless low iron glass tank with a built in sump/filter, I would love to see it. Note: that price include shipping.

I use the lid to cover the gravel cleaning tube, my thumb will not cover it.:good: I am not a junk collector but I don't throw away leftovers from projects. I am currently suffering from I need to clean my closet syndrome which typically affects older women. You have a pair of turquoise shoes...

Where to find a 90 or 100 gallon aquarium and stand (no canopy) for a reasonable price Oh and how to you store your RO/DI water?

For a reef system, you can buy all in one aquariums which have a build in sump in the back of the tank. Below is a reasonably price ($540) 45 gallon aquarium, you would still need to buy the lights. They also make a 18 gallon version. Cobalt Aquatics 45G C-Vue Aquarium It has a small built...

Where to find a 90 or 100 gallon aquarium and stand (no canopy) for a reasonable price Oh and how to you store your RO/DI water?

Jan, Below is a portable RO unit. To install this system you remove the screen on your faucet and screw in the value. So now you have 2 hoses connected to your faucet. One hose connected to your faucet is the input water, the other hose is the waste water. So when running, you will have water...

Where to find a 90 or 100 gallon aquarium and stand (no canopy) for a reasonable price Oh and how to you store your RO/DI water?

Sump are cool. Skimmers don't have filters, just an air stone and possible a pump. Proteins ie: fish crap, will attached to the tiny bubbles made by the air stone. They rise up in the skimmer and dumped into a little collection cup. The basic principle of skimmers, remove the crap before it...

I hear ya, I hate spiders! No, you just turn off the water under your sink if it has a shut off value.

The photo request was to see if you have a shut off value under your sink. If so, just hire a plumber, it may take him 15 minutes to hook up the fresh water line. The waste water line is a simple job for plumber.

You don't need a sump for a reef system, they do make hang on back skimmer.

I am thinking about a garbage can like this where you have to tip it to move around: My apologies for the poor photo. A trolley or wagon may be much easier to move around. But I agree, no 5 gallon buckets for me.

Come on Jan, you can do it! The only tool you need for the value is this: That's a nice photo. I believe RO unit work by using the water pressure. You have to plumb it. Clean out under your sink and take photo, a nice photo please and post it. But you can do it!

I have a garage filled with stuff such as a leftover piece of shower stall liner (rubber). I glue a small piece of rubber (2"x2") to a piece of square PVC and use it as a cap over the gravel cleaning tube to stop the siphon. A jar lid may work, the suction from the siphon will hold it in place.

Under the kitchen sink there should be a value with a hose connected to the faucet. Remove the hose and screw on a tee as shown below: Just ask for help in the plumbing section. You could also screw on a multiple output value: EDIT: Use this solution so you can turn the water off to your RO...

Your best option maybe a dresser. You could look at kitchen base cabinet. One option, buy a metal aquarium stand and use the cabinet as a facade.

Just to be clear, are you going to move the garbage can filled with water to your tanks? 50 gallons will weigh ~400 lbs. Even if you could move that, the wheels may not support the weight. Mark

Yep, it should cure while submerged. I did search about that project, a few others have the same issue. The pH seem to settle around 8.0. The Drylock product contains lime, as Colin say that may be the issue. I am interested in your issue as I am working on DIY hardscape project using...
