Never buy a very large glass aquarium.

I am not sure if a generic 40lbs per square foot makes sense from a engineering view. Take one standard overweight 200 lb American standing on the floor, that's 5 times over the load bearing capacity of the floor. If the load on the floor is next to a load bearing wall, the capacity of the wall...

Never buy a very large glass aquarium.

Go ahead but you should just ask your Dad, " Where are the load bearing walls to determine which way the joists are running?" That should impress him. Floor joist will run perpendicular (90 degree) to the load bearing walls ie: the joist sit on top of the wall.

Never buy a very large glass aquarium.

Price out small acrylic tanks A 29 gallon SeaClear Acrylic Aquarium Combo Set is $258 in the USA. My LFS sells 75 gallon framed tanks at cost, $100. For tanks about 100-150 gallon and up, start looking at acrylic. Long ago I worked in a aquarium store that had one room will all acrylic tanks, I...

Never buy a very large glass aquarium.

Cut&paste time: "A 55-gallon tank weighs about 42 pounds when made of acrylic and about 78 pounds when made of glass, " Now fill it with water, it weighs about 650 pounds (294 Kg). For second floors, find a spot along an exterior (outside) wall and better yet, the tank is perpendicular to the...

Never buy a very large glass aquarium.

Acrylic tanks are welded by using a solvent that melts the material. Silicone does not adhere to acrylic very well.

Yep, the advantage of acrylic is it can bend, the disadvantage is it will bend or bow.

Mbuna Condos, concepts for a African Cichlid tank

Clearly this project is turning into a learning thing, I never made a silicone mold for casting nor have I used cement for making things. I have a rather boring bucket list of things to do  One problem with the mold, it is shrinking as predicted by someone on the web, the mineral...

When starting a fishless cycle on a newly set up aquarium and adding liquid ammonia how much does it take?

I think that was a problem for Dr. Tim sales, I bought a bottle in January which is now 4 drops/gallon. So my tank/sump is ~80 gallons or 320 drops, I used 1/2 bottle to cycle my tank (2 dosing).

Mbuna Condos, concepts for a African Cichlid tank

OK, more prototyping. I decided to make a rock face mold using silicone caulk purchased at a Dollar store (Red Devil brand). While searching for techniques using caulk reminded me of an old engineering saying: "The wonderful thing about standards is there is so many to choose from". I found so...

    Diy driftwood

Here is a picture of my Little Nippier tank (Odessa and Tiger barbs): The wood was dead shrubs collected from a trail behind my house. I soaked them in bleach for about 5 days then in plain water for about a month with numerous water changes. I had no worries about the chlorine, it was long...

    Options for 150g rebuild

For the native or large predatory tank, will feeding be an issue? I agree with itiwhetu, you can see large fish from a distance. I like the idea of a school of Angels, they look very majestic while swimming together.

    New Aquarium thoughts

By running the filter input/output lines inside the aquarium, you can place the aquarium against the wall ie: no need for a gap. The input lines would always startup when you turn on the filter, no need to start a siphon. Mark

    A kitty!

I signed a peace treaty with the local deer population, I will no longer plant deer food in my gardens, they no longer come into my yard looking for food. Long ago I had a dog which was not tied up and keep the deer out. My landscaping was dominated by hosta, we have shaded yard with ~20 full...

    A kitty!

I believe this is a key issue, the coyotes which survived our all-out extermination attempt know how to avoid humans and are very stealthy. Classic case of evolution, the ability to adapt.

    Words of wisdom...

That happen to me long ago when I had a young family and was quite busy in life. For me it was the bucket water change system I grew tired of, my tank crashed and I got out of the hobby. I made a promise that I would never have another aquarium unless I had a water change system that was easy...

    Seven new baby kittens.

True. One day my Golden Retriever got loose and my neighbor got quite upset, she could not let her cat out to roam the neighborhood because my very friendly dog was roaming the neighborhood. My issue with cats, they have wiped out the chipmunk population at my house. Everyday this cat...

    Seven new baby kittens.

In my area, cats left out all night are dinner for the coyotes and coywolves are coming soon. Why are cats allowed to roam while dogs need to be tied up?

    Prince Philip died

Just to be clear, I thought initially CAMRA supported real ale defined as live ale ie: the yeast is still alive, cask conditioned and pulled (pumped) from the cask (or keg). The concern was becoming a nation dominated by highly industrialized beer ie: like the USA. CAMRA may no longer be needed...

Building my own aquarium -height/depth, the point of diminishing return?

The key statement, use a " 2 part paint inside to waterproof", most likely this is a epoxy type paint ie: a chemical reaction to create a watertight seal.

You got great neighbors. The house next to me is a family with a 6 year son. I ask his Dad if I can show his son my fish, his mocking replay "Fish? Why do you have fish? You got an aquarium or something?". No dude, I got some bass and walleye flopping around on the kitchen floor:mad: Strange...

1st Time Freshwater Sump Design (feedback, please!)

Someone suggested an idea to me, just run your main siphon into the fluidized bed section of the filter. The filter media will grind up and break down any material (including small fish) dumped into the filter. Use the head pressure from the main siphon line to create the required water...
