If filter boost is a bacteria in a bottle product, I would add ammonia such as Dr. Tims.

150 mbuna cichlid tank. Work in progress. Thoughts?

Nice tank! What I did long ago for my Mbuna tank, I built a rack for the rocks using pvc pipe. This allowed me to go up without using tons of rocks.

    Substrate ideas

And for my Mbuna tank, I would need ~100-150 lb of rock, that would be $200-300. To put that in perspective, I can buy a new 75 gallon tank for $100 at my LFS.

    Substrate ideas

Buying rocks at the aquarium store can be very expensive, here is an idea to consider. Collect some rocks from your area which are aquarium safe (test with vinegar or muriatic acid). Put on some disposable gloves and cover the damp rock with polyurethane Gorilla glue. Toss the rocks into a...

At $26/ 4.4lb (2 Kg), seems expensive. You can also buy 18 lb of Polished Pebbles for $28. For these prices, why not buy some CaribSea Eco Complete ($23/20 lb at PetCo) for the bottom layer and cover it with finer grade substrate?

150 mbuna cichlid tank. Work in progress. Thoughts?

I would add more rocks and get rid of the black slate. Long ago I found great source of rocks, my employer parking lot. The entire bottom of my Mbuna tank (50 gallon) was rocks. If you can find a local source of large rocks, set them directly on the bottom of the tank with another layer or 2 of...

    Snowed In Today...

I live in western NY, lake effect snow country. Sometimes they just have to manage their resources ie: snowplows and drivers. If it is snowing heavily all night, they may wait until a few hours before the morning commute before sending out everything they have.

    Lonely rainbow shark?

I actually didn't think about it, I bought a juvenile one at PetCo and really could not tell the difference. I will assume it's a female. The PetCo employee has not mastered the 2 net method of catching fish, I was lucky to get any rainbow out of the tank  But she has given her new...

    *Urgent* Help Weatherizing My Fish/Tanks

For the major ice storm we got back in 1991, the skies clear in the morning and what a magical sight to see the sunrise thru the trees covered with 1" of ice. Of course that moment didn't last long as you heard crack as another branch breaks off the tree.

Glad everything is OK. Now the biggest danger is, all those chainsaws running with inexperienced operators. I hate chainsaws.... What I remember, how eerie that night was when the power went out, it was so silent until crack! as a big branch broke or a tree fell.

    Lonely rainbow shark?

I should have been more clear, the store was Pet Supplies Plus, an economy pet store. My local Mom&Pop fish store had a bunch of rainbows in their own 20 gallon tank but they were under quarantine. Even my local PetCo would not put a rainbow shark with a Peacock Cichlid.

    Lonely rainbow shark?

I have the day off so went to some fish stores today, I want a rainbow shark for my barb tank. One store had 3 small rainbows with a 2-3" Peacock Cichlid in a ~10 gallon tank. I felt so sorry for the rainbows, one was quite beat up. Don't understand these stores....

    *Urgent* Help Weatherizing My Fish/Tanks

I live in western New York, the land of lake effect snow. We average around 100 inches (250 cm) of snow every year. A storm dumping 2 feet of snow means we stay home for a day then back to normal. An inch of ice is completely different, it took 2 week to fully restore power in our metro area...

OK, how about your neighborhood, does it have underground wiring? Do you live in an older neighborhood with fully growth trees? Typically in ice storms, they get the main lines up quickly, it is the older neighborhoods which may be down for a long time. The worst storm in our area, we lost power...

    Most popular fish species/subspecies/colors?

For your first question, no, there is not a standard color for bettas (in the wild, they are a dull greyish-green with short fins). They have been selectively breed for over 100 years. I would pick the Betta, corydoras (they are cute) and freshwater Angelfish.

Agreed. I am happy with the hardscape in my new tank (enter in the tank of month contest) but it still looks 'staged' ie: carefully laid out. I am struggling with plants as I plan on large fish population which require lots of open space to swim but I still want some heavily planted areas...

Returning to it - big community tank ideas pls - what's out there these days?

For my Mbuna tank, I have access to a source of rocks but they are boring looking and I not going to spend $500 for rocks at my local fish store. I read on another forum that the polyurethane Gorilla glue is safe for aquariums once it has fully cured (1 week). So my plan is to cover the rocks...

What seems to be a big change, aquascaping. I am still working on my "little nipper tank", Tiger & Odessa barb with some Serpae Tetras, you can see it in the contest of the month link. Sorry, no design idea but if you live in the USA, here is suggest for material: 24 in. x 1/2 in. x 4 ft. White PVC ($32). The stuff has little structural strength but it well suited for water exposure and can be painted. Edit: Note, they also sell 1/4" thick sheets.
