    Winter Ice Storm in Texas

During extreme heat waves, we don't have excess power generation. Nationally, the amount of generation required by the USA (~140% of average) is determine by extreme heat waves. In the winter, my electric consumption (western New York) goes down as I use natural gas for heat and hot water. So...

    Winter Ice Storm in Texas

Yep, time to clean house. Wind, solar, natural gas, coal and nuclear plants are all capable of working in cold weather, except in Texas. It might be bad timing with renewable jokes, residents with solar panels on the roof have electric.

    Winter Ice Storm in Texas

Much sympathy to all of you in Texas. At first I thought this was an issue with downed power lines but that's not the major problem, lack of generation is causing your woes. Texas needs to eliminate the independent ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas, how ironic) power grid. There is...

Can I turn off my filter at night?

I broke a cardinal rule, I offered advice before I googled it. So this situation is: With COVID, no job, no money and no sleep ie: my noisy HOB filter is keeping me awake. For a short term solution , can I turn off my filter at night? What popped up for me when I googled it, the lack of oxygen...

An IEP would be covered by HIPPA's privacy rules, only those who need to know would be aware of your IEP. This means a teacher could not announce to everyone that you are allowed extra time concerning your homework as an example. This is a two step process, first they will determine if you...

Just got back from the fishy store!!!

Not sure what your starter kit was but to be safe, get some bacteria in a bottle and pour in near the filter intakes.

Mbuna Condos, concepts for a African Cichlid tank

Nasty glue, even uncured it is difficult to remove. On a positive note, she does not have to wash her hair for a very long time! I want a sump filter which pulls the water from the top and requires the water return on the bottom of the tank. I don't need any filtering action, it's more of a...

Mbuna Condos, concepts for a African Cichlid tank

Actually the 29 gallon is 12" deep. To be clear, the 29g tank is too small for a proper Mbuna setup. I would just set it up temporary to test out how my plan works. African Mbuna are very hardy fish, great fish for beginners if they wanted a species tank.

Mbuna Condos, concepts for a African Cichlid tank

It is a steal, I would be happy with 50 gallon breeder tank which has the desired 18" depth but that cost more than the 75 gallon tank. I have an unused 29 gallon tank, I may try the above concept with ~4 Mbunas. The big question is, will they dig out under the rocks?

150 mbuna cichlid tank. Work in progress. Thoughts?

When I look at some of these aquascapes, building a habitat for the fish seems to be a low priority. Now when I ask my Tiger Barbs what they want, they voted for a Bubbling Mermaid! They like the well endowed ones, horny little fish

Mbuna Condos, concepts for a African Cichlid tank

My LFS is still selling 75 gallon tanks for $100, time to start planning my next system, a Mbuna tank. My primary focus when aquascaping a Mbuna tank will be to create as many 'caves' as possible. This is a highly territorial rock dwelling fish that wants a place to call home. In my previous...

New set up and I think I’ve messed up already!

The real issue here, is a dirted tank the right choice for someones 1st planted tank? Second issue, it looks like she is setting up a fish tank with a few background plants, not a true planted tank with a jungle of lush plants.

New set up and I think I’ve messed up already!

Your tank is looking alot better, all new tanks look dirty when initially setup. It should clear up and the plants should survive. On cycling the tank, I had good success with the ammonia and bacteria in a bottle method. Total cycle time was ~10 days. I used Dr. Tim's ammonia and a small...

    Quick cycle question pls respond

I would suggest buying some ammonia (Dr. Tim) and adding that to the tank instead of adding fish right away.

I use to write software, now I am in my semi-retirement job, I drive a school bus. I love my "toasted sugar bomb" kids, I avoid using the ADD label. In New York, you may qualify for an Individualized Education Program (IEP). My son got one, he was given more time for test and homework. I assume California has something similar. IEPs are great, like a golden ticket! But you may still have to do your homework..... EDIT: On second thought, a...

New set up and I think I’ve messed up already!

Look, it's not you, you just got terrible advice. I just started up a 75 gallon tank, I don't have a planting strategy so I just tossed this plant ( Cabomba Purple) behind some wood pieces, it's growing like crazy! I believe it feeds from the water column, not the roots. I am not good with...

Sand with root tabs (fertilizer) is much easier and cleaner. You can also use a substrate for plants such as Eco-complete but in a couple years, you need to add root tabs. Your local aquatics shop is crazy offering this advice for a first time planted tank. I would start over with no soil.
