    Gravel Vac controversy

I will hover over the substrate to vac up anything on the surface in the areas that I can get to, but I don't bother moving anything or getting in between the plants, and I very rarely ever vac deep into the substrate. Haven't done so in quite a long time. Fish poop is my only fertilizer.

Technically dolphins are whales. They are toothed whales, same as the sperm whale and beaked whales. Toothed whales and baleen whales are all cetaceans. So dolphins are technically just small whales.

    Fish 'Can' see colour.

When I turn on the blue light, the fish begin to go into sleep mode, but they certainly can see it. If the tank goes from dark to blue too suddenly, it can spook them. Red works better with nocturnal fish in my experience. I only ever see some of my nocturnal fish if I turn on the red light. And...

Cool pic of one of my crystal shrimps

Yes, the first comment made that clear. But there's no point commenting four times (now 5) about it trying to bring him down. I think it looks great regardless.

Cool pic of one of my crystal shrimps

It's a great picture regardless.... It also doesn't look like the exact same lighting, just in the same place. The pic does look edited, as the edges as darkened. But a great looking shrimp and a good quality picture all the same.

    Do I dare?

Bettas aren't kept in cups at LFS here. The fancier bettas have small tanks to themselves and a snail. The less fancy bettas are kept in tanks with other fish that aren't nippy. The females tend to have their own sorority tank.

    Pearl gourami issues

Don't know how I got it into my head that this was a 40 breeder. So then I have seen a 2:3 ratio work out in a tank of your size. Looks good to me at least.
  8. B

    Pearl gourami issues

2 males and 3 females can work with these guys depending on if that would fit with the rest of your stock. Someone I know elsewhere has this ratio, though that is in a 55 gallon.

    Pearl gourami issues

Yeah, sorry to say but they are both males. The picture Byron posted shows a female on the bottom. You can see in this picture (female pearl gourami) that the females are more plump, less colourful and have shorter fins. Then here is another that shows a male and a female.
  10. B

    Pearl gourami issues

They are all males. The females don't get an orange throat, it stays silver. And their dorsal fin is too long and the anal fin has extensions on the "larger female". They are males. That would be why you are having aggression issues. I would rehome two of them unfortunately and get two actual...

    Ram Gender identification?

There are electric blue orange heads too. And black rams. Beautiful. They are trying to breed red rams too. And some say there are super red rams. Never seen any.

    Giant tower cap snail

One inch, 2.5cm, is the normal size for MTS. They often stay even smaller. 5cm is far too big. 8-10cm is most definitely too big. You were sold the right snail.

    Giant tower cap snail

Look at the pictures of them. I guess it would be brown spots, rather than red. Looks quite red to me. But the OP's snail certainly isn't one of them.
  14. B

    Giant tower cap snail

This snail is over twice the size of a MTS already. MTS shells are light brown with reddish spots. MTS MTS Brotia Brotia Your snail does have some shell erosion, but it should be fine as long as your water has the correct parameters for snails shells. Which must be the case as you have others.

    Giant tower cap snail

My favourite type of snail right there. Love them.
  16. B

    Giant tower cap snail

Then hopefully it is a male, or that 6cm "fact" holds true! They also don't breed quite as readily as some other species of snails, so hopefully that will favour you too. We'll have to see.

    Giant tower cap snail

Both the MTS and Brotia are part of the Cerithioidea, so similarities are to be expected. Though while the MTS is from the family Thiaridae, Brotia and rabbit snails are from the family Pachychilidae. There is a fair chance that that may be the case. It takes them around two years to be able to...

    Giant tower cap snail

I looked into them a bit more. They can produce 60-100 babies at once. 2-3 times per year.

    Giant tower cap snail

My cousin had some of these at some point, not sure if she still does. They are in the same family as rabbit snails, though they aren't from the genus Tylomelania, the rabbit snails. This is Brotia herculea. They are livebearers and produce a lot of babies, though only a few times a year. They...

Are eSHa ndx, gdex and 2000 treatments shrimp safe?

No need to remove 25 litres. The tank is 125l, but it won't hold 125l of water with substrate and decor in there (and even when empty). I believe essjay estimated that there is 100l of water in there when full, so add 100 drops with the tank full.

I've used gdex and 2000 with my shrimp. All went well.

    Wild Betta Photos

It's an addictive bug to catch. I look forward to seeing the macrostoma if you manage to get them. Beautiful fish. And their size is impressive. I've always been a fan of Betta tussyae, if I ever got the opportunity I would jump at it.

    Adverts in Seriously Fish profiles

Seriously fish is one of the better sites, but there are errors such as that. There can be errors in the text too, which I think should be pointed out. Until recently, the neon tetra temperature they gave was too high a value. Byron had it corrected thankfully. I still think the German blue ram...

I'm seeing this on some: "It is advised to find a filter which has a water flow between 4-5 times the volume of your aquarium. At a volume of 540 litres, the filter we recommend can be found here. As this is a large aquarium, you may need more than one of these." "It is advised to find a...

"which could mislead some readers to believe that they are inserted by SF itself." That makes it seem that that is not the case. The orange boxes look to be part of the care sheets to me, recommendations as to what may be appropriate for the fish involved.

Are you sure they weren't added by SF? Some of them say "the filter we recommend can be found here." which leads me to believe they are added by SF.

Do you have any pictures that show it better? The picture above isn't too clear.
  35. B

    Worm thing

Sounds like it could be a caddisfly larvae. The black head and beige body combined with creating a tube sounds like its one of them. Generally they are harmless, though a few species are predatory. As it is making a case (if I've ID'ed correctly), I'd wager this is a detritus eater and not one...

    What's the craic from Ireland

Sorry that your first post here ended up going as it did. There are certain topics that people are passionate about and often the initial reason for a post can be forgotten about. But it usually is more pleasant around here, and I'm sure that through reading peoples responses in other threads...

    What's the craic from Ireland

Good. That should be a given. I've never experimented with my fish. I would always take the advise from people on forums that had actual experience with these things. This is why I came to you for advise on Bolivians. My fish are housed according to countless hours of research, preparation and...

    What's the craic from Ireland

Again, I disagree. Other than that people shouldn't take their advise from store staff. There is more than one way to go about the hobby, to state that one way is led through misconceptions, advice from stores and an apparent lack of care for the animals involved is simply wrong. I'd argue its a...
