My opinion is certainly unpopular around here and tends to spark some reactions when mentioned. Not all domestic bettas are unsuited for community tanks and depending on the individual and the tank mates, they can do very well in them. All of mine have been in communities.

Yep, paradise fish are also gourami. I've never looked into these contests before, so I didn't know bettas weren't included until it was mentioned here. It was just a bit strange to see them not included. But if that's the way it's preferred, then I can understand.

Looks to be crane fly larvae. They aren't much harm as they feed off of detritus, decaying plant matter and some will eat small insects.

The can be aggressive, more so than many other gourami. Having another gourami in there can pose a problem.

Do you have a better picture of him? It's best to treat this as something that can actually be treated, and not jump to DGIV, which is really overstated. Details on the tank mates and water quality can only serve to help as well.

I usually wait a day before feeding new fish. But if they are looking very relaxed and settled in, I will feed them before then.

Do you have any dogs or cats that could have picked it off the floor? I'd look around all the nooks and crannies of the tank to see if you can find a body if you haven't already. Even moving decorations and or plants a bit if you are able.

I would leave it personally, if he is finding it to be a comfortable place to hide. If there is a place he can get stuck, or you are worried about it, I would move it forward a little bit to give him more room.

My bettas are with other fish too. Hopefully your betta works out in your tank, just keep an eye on them if they are staying that way. I wouldn't get more rasbora. Best not to have too much movement to stress out a betta.

I wouldn't say rescue is the right word. I think he looks great. Very beautiful. From those pics, I can't see that the spine is bent, it looks normal to me, at least in the second pic. But a picture doesn't tell the full story.

By traditional gravel I take it you mean the larger stoned gravel? I've had mine on both pea gravel and sand. It didn't like the pea gravel.

I would do a sand substrate with banjos. They like to bury in it, and I found that they don't like gravel very much. I've never tried dirt, but I would suspect it wouldn't be as easy to bury in.

If you can grow algae on your glass and decor, and are willing to do so, it isn't hard to keep them fed. Smooth rocks are best to grow some aufwuchs for them to eat. They will eat certain foods, sometimes algae wafers, vegetables or other sinking wafers. But the aufwuchs is the most important...

Also onto your question. If you want to breed them, don't keep them with any of those fish at all. Keep them in their own tank, that is set up to meet their temperature needs. Breeding rams in a community tank is not going to work.
