I live in San Jose but tend to find any excuse to take road trips. We have membership to the aquarium & you seem close enough to Monterey to make it worth the trip. Count me in.

Are there any other fish out there that look like zebra catfish. Was at a big box chain store & saw what looked like zebra catfish. I thought they were supposed to be hard to come by. Perhaps it was just a similar looking fish?

They did have filters but they failed many years ago and had never been replaced. The newt is 13 years old and the axolotl is over 7. Seems to me they don't miss the filters much, :) Thanks for the response; I'll keep digging around to see if I get anything on using the gravel (no pun intended).

That was helpful. Thank you. It motivated me to contact Kordon directly & they were quite helpful. What I learned was 1) the older product does have a bad smell to it and 2)they have tested product up to 8 years old & found the efficacy had not diminished whatsoever.

I have two tanks but they do not have fish nor filters. They contain amphibians: a fire belly newt and the other has an axolotl. Can I use some of the substrate from those tanks as mature media?

How long does AmQuel Plus stay effective? I can't seem to find an expiration date on the label of the bottle I have. A part of me says if Twinkies have a shelf life of 20 years then this stuff might still be good. But I took a whiff of the stuff in there & I am hesitant to use it. :sick:
