Question on hatching brine shrimp eggs

Hi there, A few questions for those experienced with hatching brine shrimp eggs: 1. The PH here in New Orleans is 8.2. This means I don't have to add baking soda, correct? 2. Some websites say you don't need a light right on the top of the hatchery, since room light is enough. Is this...

Experience with Odessa Barbs: Not good

They seem do be doing well. Good to know yours are behaving well. I had quite a lot of cover in the tank (plants and driftwood) and most of them would just hide under the leaves in their "territory". But mine got into a frenzy during feeding that did not leave much food for the rainbows. I...

Experience with Odessa Barbs: Not good

Hi everyone, You might have seen the thread where I introduced my new 55g with 6 Odessa Barbs and 6 Maccullochi Rainbowfish. The Odessas look stunning to me with their strong red coloration and after searching for information in the internet I decided to get a group of them. They are often...

    Video of new, low-tech 55g

Thank you! They were sold as julii, but I know trilineatus is more common. Too late for the video :) Thank you. I got ideas from watching a lot of videos. It is quite simple, actually. I like the concept of "island".

    Video of new, low-tech 55g

Hi everyone, Tank has cycled and I have finally all the fish: - 6 Dwarf Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia maccullochi "Starche Creek") - 6 Odessa Barbs (Pethia padamya) - 6 Corydoras Julii - 5 Panda Garras (Garra flavatra) Here is a video of the tank made with my crappy iPhone camera: The...

    Do you ever feel uninspired?

Beautiful! Why don't you use Australian Freeze Dried Blackworms? They don't foul the water.

    Do you ever feel uninspired?

I suggest figuring out what excites you more at this point in the hobby, either a planted tank or the discus. Keeping discus in a planted tank is possible, but difficult. I would not recommend doing both in the same tank. Most discus keepers have them in bare bottom tanks or tanks with sand...

    Not doing water changes often!!!

A lot information about your setup is required before providing advice. How big is the tank? What plants, fish, substrate do you have? etc.

    Do you ever feel uninspired?

I am not sure I got all the information. How big is the tank? Did you get discus? What plants and fish you currently have? Please provide more details about setup and equipment.

    Auto fish feeders

The "cruel" environment is the one where the species evolved and adapted. They are programed to thrive in that environment. To define that envorinment as cruel is just anthropomorphism. If discus thought anything (anthropomorphism again), they would chose to keep things as they are. Moreover...

    Auto fish feeders

In 2012 I travelled abroad and left my group of 6 wild discus with no food. More than 3 weeks after my departure, my daughter sent the picture below. You can see how algae had taken over a tank with no maintenance. But instead of having declining fish, a pair spawned and had fry attached to the...

Urgent! Discus not eating and pale

Before medicanitng the fish, please provide more information. Discus require clean water. What is your water change regime? How much water do you change and how often? I see that you have gravel in the tank. I would not recommend keeping discus with that kind of substrate. A bare bottom tank or...

    Auto fish feeders

Folks, multiple feedings a day are required only to fry/juveniles that are growing out. Adult fish can easily go a week with no food and will be abslolutely fine. You should chose a hungry fish over a fish in a dirty and potentially poisonous water. I have had three groups of wild discus for...

    Question about water changes

An example of when I was breeding wild discus (I don't have discus anymore). Here is the fry of Cuipeua discus when they were 2 weeks old: And here is the same fish when they were 6 months old: I did 90% water changes every day. Do you think such WC regime affected the fish positively or...

Sure, it is absolutely important to use a proper conditioner to treat any water that goes into your tank.

    Question about water changes

You are absolutely correct in doing what you are doing. Unfortunately, most LFS give terrible advice. Come to forums like this one to get proper advice. A lot of fish breeders do 90% or more WCs daily, with no issues. With larger WCs you keep your water parameters more stable and closer to your...

Just a pair of Red Irian Rainbow?

Thanks for the reply. I have given up the usual rainbowfish, who are too large for a 55g tank. I am getting instead 6 Melanotaenia Maccullochi, a type of dwarf rainbowfish that reaches no more than 3 inches.

    Community Tank Advice Needed

I have just cycled a 55g and I am starting to decide on stocking. I recommend you look at Odessa Barbs. As for smaller schooling fish, I am getting Pearl Danios (Danio albolineatus. Not to be confused with Celestial Pearl Danios). You can also consider the Glowlight Danio. Beautiful schooling fish.

    Shallow 48 gallon tank ideas

You should get a nice group of small schooling fish. I have pearl danios (danio albolineatus) and love them. Glowlight danios (danio choprae) would also look great there.

    Unpopular Opinions (fish related)

Thanks. They are not mouthbrooders. They lay their eggs on surfaces, which then hatch attached to them. In the video, you can see how one pair laid eggs on driftwood. The other pair (the one with the fry) did it in the breeding cone. When the fry become free swimmers, parents will kindly put...

    Unpopular Opinions (fish related)

Here are my two: 1. The right place for shrimp is in a plate, with good sauces, not in a fish tank. 2. Some planted tanks look more like a salad bar, rather than a natural environment. Said it :)

Thanks. You are so right. Looking at fry attached to the parent's body is amazing. And their spawning "dance" is also a great sight. I would love to have a large rainbowfish tank. Do you have any pictures?

Yes,fish that like the company of their own kind do better in groups.

With age I have learned to appreciate quality instead of quantity, when it comes to the number of species in a tank. When I was young I would have a lot of different species in a crowded tank, instead of attending to their needs and appreciating the beauty of fish that school together with the...
