Having fish with different water requirements mixed together aswell as a male betta living with 3 females. All in such a tiny space, its a massacre waiting to happen

In a tank that small, balancing the parameters will be very difficult. I'd recommend large waterchanges much more frequently, despite having filtration. I'd aim for 75% waterchanges, with substrate vacuuming, atleast twice a week. Monitor the parameters with a liquid test kit while doing this...

If you open the door quickly, it blows back. Smoke can also blow back into the room if the chimney/liner isn't swept regularly or has a nest inside of it. You can get downdraft on a windy way or if you have tall trees around your house also. (I used to install them a few years back ?)

I'd personally use aquarium sealant just to be on the safe side as I honestly do not know. I'm sure another member would have the answers for your questions though

You're not just overstocked, you have fish which require different GH. Not only are you attempting a betta in a community tank, but you also have another species of labyrinth fish in with it aswell as fast swimming, fin nippers. That stocking is going to cause you alot of problems in the long run

Does look like burns to me. Fin rot almost tends to be a lining the tail and receding it, that almost looks like the tail was wedged into the heater. Keep the water clean and monitor. Daily 75% waterchanges should heal it up. If it gets worse @Colin_T has a very good paragraph that he's written...

I forgot, I had a U3 or U4, can't remember, on my sorority once. Found it too powerful. The fish would go flying at feeding times. I opted for a double sponge filter in the end, would recommend. Very cheap on ebay and just need an air pump. The bettas appreciated it too
