Would a Air stone be a benifit?

What filter are you using at the moment? It depends on the type of filter that you have. If you already have a hang on filter, external canister filter or sponge filter which can create water aeration, then you don't need any air stone. Or if you find that your filter is not creating enough...

    Apistos with cpos

Apistogrammas are bottom level fish. They are easily targeted by the Mexican dwarf crayfish especially when they sleep at night. In the past, I had one female Apistogramma Cacatuoides that was sick. Upon seeing the sick fish, the dwarf crayfish immediately grabbed and killed the fish before I...

    New To Discus

55 gallons is a good size for small to medium size Discus. You can try to start with at least 6-8 Discus. The fewer the Discus, the more difficult to keep them due to aggression issues. For fully grown adult, usually it's recommended 8-10 gallons per Discus. You can upgrade your tank when they...

**Question of the week** | What is your favorite aquarium plant, and why?

It could be also due to the lack of water agitation/aeration as you don't have filter in the tank. The bad gases is building up in your tank. Some plants may also die without water aeration, thus creating the rotten smell. If possible, try to have at least an air stone in your tank.

**Question of the week** | What is your favorite aquarium plant, and why?

I am not so adventurous in trying out the different plants as I find that not many plants are hardy and some are hard to maintain or may require soil, much light, fertilizer and CO2. My favourite plants are plants that are easy to grow: 1)Cabomba In my opinion, this plant has the most beautiful...

**Question of the week** | What is your favorite aquarium plant, and why?

Rotten smell should be hydrogen sulfide... Something are rotting inside your tank.

**Question of the week** | What is your favorite aquarium plant, and why?

Is your Anacharis Elodea growing well? Usually, rotten smell means your plants are dying or melting away... If the plants are growing well, then probably they may have blue green algae(my first suspect) growing on them.. Blue green algae is a cyanobacteria and it may create rotten smell.

    Fish keep dying

I read a website where it says that the parasites will die without a host. But I have no idea how long they can survive without a host. Probably, you need at least 1 month or longer for all of them to die. Also, take note that snail can be a host for the parasites. Lastly, Praziquantel is safe...

    Fish keep dying

I forgot to mention that shrimps and snails probably won't be affected by the flukes. Your plants and snails can't withstand the salt. They will die. Prazi is safe for shrimps and probably the snails also.

    Fish keep dying

Usually the common medication is Praziquantel(Prazi) but some flukes may have developed immunity to Prazi. You may have to dose at least 1 month or longer as the flukes eggs may still be around and will only hatch only later. If you don't have Prazi on hand, you can try using salt for 3 weeks...

    Fish keep dying

Watch for any symptoms of disease. If it's gill flukes infection, your fish will be scratching against objects or the glass in the tank. At final stage of gill flukes infection, the fish will breathe very fast. Did you observe the above symptoms? Gill flukes will kill fish one by one slowly or...

Exciting Trip to the Fish Store

You are right man...LOL Even the fish store staff told me to convert to saltwater fish. And if I don't keep corals, probably I don't need RO water and chiller. Neocaridina failed molt, low KH?

By the way, you only have 6 few shrimps in your 50 liter tank. Your bio-load is super low. Probably, you don't need to change so much water like us. I have a 60 liter tank with 100-200 shrimps plus some Chili Rasboras and male Endlers. So, my tank bio-load is high and I have to change more...

Is This Blue Green Algae (Cyanobacteria)

So, my suspicion is correct. The cyanobacteria came together with the plants. By right, sterilizing the plants for 1 min in bleach shouldnt kill the plants unless you overdosed the bleach. Also, remember not to put the plants in tap water without anti-Chlorine. The Chlorine will kill the...

Is This Blue Green Algae (Cyanobacteria)

Did you sterilize your plants before putting them into the tank? And what plants do you have? I'm suspecting that this Cyanobacteria (blue green algae) come together with some plants that are planted in very dirty/polluted area. It's a kind of bacteria and not an algae. There was once I bought...

    Stocking thinking

Yes, wait for the GH and pH tests first. Actually it's more convenience to keep fish that are suitable for your tap water rather than adjusting the GH. You can start to look into fish that require hard water such as the African Lake Tanganyika fish that are beautiful and intelligence. Lake...

    Neocaridina failed molt, low KH?

Here are some shrimps food recommendation: Mulberry and Kale leaves also have high Calcium. They are also sold in pellets form. https://greenleafaquariums.com/products/white-pellet-calcium-supplement-shrimp-1.html https://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/gear/the-big-shrimp-food-test/...

    Neocaridina failed molt, low KH?

Firstly, I don't think you need to do anything with your KH. Your GH and KH are high though Neocaridina shrimps can adapt to wide range of GH. The recommended GH is between 6-8. And KH of 1-4. https://theaquariumadviser.com/shrimp-breeding-water-parameters/ You shouldn't add more minerals or...

    Need another tank..?

Endlers and Guppies are great if you don't plan to have RO filters. Get only all males as they are more beautiful and they don't grow as big as the females. Also, you don't need to worry about having babies. Get some plants, driftwoods, sand or gravel to make your tank look like a small stream...

    90 Gallon Unheated Tank

Yes, I was wondering how you could carry it by yourself. Even a 3 ft tank is already quite heavy if it has thick glass. And a 4 ft tank is heavy and long. Any one else keep mbunas?

I had too many tanks in my living room at that time. I was also focusing on Apistogrammas species and Blue Rams at that time. Anyway, if I want to keep them now, I will need to use salt (minerals) for African fish as I have soft water from my tap. For long term keeping, it may not be suitable...

    Storing RO/DI water?

    Any one else keep mbunas?

I kept them for only a short period. They are beautiful and intelligent fish. They are very quick swimmer and they often come to the front of the tank... They are bold, interesting and entertaining unlike Discus that are timid and easily frightened.

    Storing RO/DI water?

Yes, storing water is useful if you keep fish or shrimps that require special water such as marine fish, Sulawesi shrimps, or if you use RO/DI water that require you to add special salt/GH+ salt. Usually I stored them at least one night in advance before my water change. I mixed my distilled...

    I have an odd one.

Different breeds of Bettas behave differently. Aggressive Bettas will kill smaller fish if they can catch them or if the tank is small. On the other hand, big fins and tail Bettas can get nipped or ripped apart by other fish. In the past, I had a veil tail Betta which was not too aggressive...

How much have you spent on the hobby?

Fish keeping hobby is expensive. I guess I spent the most on the medications and the filters. In my country, the fish are consider cheap. SHRIMP, and the Ring of Death!

Yes, a lot of water change due to too much debris and detritus worms in my tank. I have to siphon them out every week. If your tap water parameter/chemistry, temperature are the same and stable every week, usually you won't have any problem even with 50-60% of water change. I'm not sure...
