Slowly learning about saltwater from working at the store!

Nah, the ones in the store are like 8 inches. Idk how big they get eventually. I haven’t seen their teeth cause I don’t do the saltwater feeding

Slowly learning about saltwater from working at the store!

This guy—Red Sea Sailfin Tang—is my favorite, but it seems like tangs are one of the larger varieties of saltwater fish when they’re fully grown, so idk if I’d be keeping one even if I got a marine tank. It’s so weird to get used to not just different fish, but entirely different categories of...

Can someone explain the difference between peacocks and haps to me?

No, I’m not suddenly getting an African tank 😂. I need to tell them apart to help customers but I can’t or the life of me figure out the difference between the two. Can someone enlighten me?

    My 'big' tank

Tiger lotus I believe. Nice plants. In a smaller tank, they’ll send some of their leaves all the way to the surface like a lily pad.

    What are you doing today?

Went with the store this morning to make some house calls to break down people’s tanks. It’s interesting getting hands-on experience with different tank sizes beyond just seeing the number. For instance, I now know that 55s are tall and wide but very skinny.

Why aren't there any freshwater cnidarians/echinoderms?

I'm trying to hunt it down, but someone in a YouTube comment described a freshwater jellyfish that feeds by rising to the surface for light, then sinking to the bottom for fresh nitrogen, in order to maintain a symbiotic algae that produces its food. 🤩🤔

Why aren't there any freshwater cnidarians/echinoderms?

The jellyfish species I linked is apparently -Native to the Yangtze -Occasionally found as an introduced/invasive species in temperate lakes all over the world, usually in a sudden bloom -About an inch in diameter -Eats zooplankton like cyclops and daphnia

TIL that there are, in fact, both freshwater jellyfish and sponges

My water lettuce is dying even though it’s right next to the light. Perhaps I will need to splurge for that fluval light, after all.

Given a large enough tank, could one colony-breed something like dwarf cichlids?

I've always wondered this. What I'm talking about is fish where, the parents claim a territory and will guard the fry within their territory for a while, but then eventually try to drive the fry out of their territory because, in the wild, they would be expected to go live on their own. But what...

Java Moss - detrius, excess food trap

I no longer have much java moss, but I've had a problem for a while with green hair algae completely permeating the substrate. It'll completely cover the bottom if I let it. I initially kept it, because I thought the fish would enjoy the way it caught potentially-yummy debris. Not so. My fish...

    Stocking ideas for 20 Gallon

I have kept pygmy cories and platies together in my 20 gallon! They will get along great so long as the water quality is right. You should test your water's hardness; the livebearers can take any level of hardness, while the cories will not do well if it's *extremely* hard. I kept my tank only...

    Not crazy about them ?

Goodeids were an internet rabbit hole I went down when first getting into the hobby, and I'd love to keep some if I ever found them. Tequilas are some of my favorites.

    What are you doing today?

Lol I’m actually not. We only sell the high-end fluval lights, which would be $120 for this tank size. I don’t really need bells and whistles like an app, so I’m gonna just get another Aqueon light from petsmart (same as the one I already have), which is $50 with dad’s employee discount.

    What are you doing today?

If I can’t find beckfordi’s I might do Von Rio (aka flame) tetras. But full-timers get to order from the wholesaler for personal use, so hopefully I’ll be able to source the beckfordi’s.

    What are you doing today?

You ninja’d me! Not yet. The original plan was an Apisto Agassizii (single male) and some beckfordi pencils. But after a) having a hard time finding apistogramma for sale locally, b) being around the rams at the store for 3 days straight, and c) also falling in love with the store’s panda...

    What are you doing today?

Plan to get the same light as on my other tank in a week or so when I’ve had my first paycheck. Then I can start really adding plants! I want Java ferns and a Tiger Lotus, and probably some duckweed to fill in the surface between the water lettuce, since I want the tank to be nice and shaded.
  39. JackGulley

I'm getting a ram! Any advice?

After being around them at the fish store, I’m strongly considering getting some Bolivians instead of apistogramma agassizii for my new tank. So we’d be in kinda the same boat!
