    Has anyone kept spiny eels?

They are constantly vigilant predators and a blast to watch. Each eel will pick one spot as its perch, twist itself around it for just the right safety-to-field-of-view ratio, and then use its head like a periscope, keeping tabs on all the other fish in the tank for hours. When the time is right...

    Has anyone kept spiny eels?

Those rocks with tons of holes that we have are perfect for them. You’d be surprised how small a gap they will snake through.

    Has anyone kept spiny eels?

These guys are my babies in the store! They are very shy and inquisitive but go into alligator-mode when you throw in a feeder. They love to weasel around in the holes in rocks. I’ve seen tanks online before where someone had a tank with a rock wall along the back, with a network of pvc pipes...

JackGulley’s South American Tank! (Under Construction)

After all that searching we actually had some Apisto Agassizii in store today. But they were really young, the shipment was really unhealthy (only 2 left out of like 30), and at this point I’m attached to the keyboles

JackGulley’s South American Tank! (Under Construction)

Checked water today and discovered it the tank was no longer cycled. I did a fishless cycle a month or two ago but forgot to continue adding ammonia to maintain it. So instead of picking up the keyholes I just grabbed a handful of glowlight tetras and some Turbostart, and also squeezed out my...

Those are nice looking! They remind me a little bit of keyholes or Laetacara. How big do they get?

Do you think fish remember each other???

Shower thought: fish, having their eyes where they are, probably can’t see any part of their body 🐟👀

    What are you doing today?

So mad rn—that cool lucky-find male Limia I scored a while back just up and died today! No idea on the cause, just found it dead in the middle of the tank. I’d say water quality, but the tiny Platy fry are still alive, and surely they’re more fragile than the second-biggest fish in the tank?

killi fish that live more than two years

They’re difficult to find intentionally, but being local to Florida means they often end up mixed in with shipments from Florida fish farms. I sold one that came in that way a few weeks ago.

    Fish tank in music room

I blast my bass guitar in my room with the fish tanks all the time. I really expected them to be bothered by it, but every time I've experimented, they don't even seem to notice the noise. I suspect there's probably some weird sound conduction shenanigans because of the water.

JackGulley’s South American Tank! (Under Construction)

Haven’t posted here in a while, but here’s what the tank looks like rn! I get my first paycheck on Friday and will be picking up a pair of keyhole cichlids. Other future residents will be a school of 10 panda cories, and, if I can obtain them, some pencilfish. If I can’t find pencils, I might...

Are these two images two different morphs of Altospinus or is one just colored up/more mature?

Opinion changes of different fish groups after spending more time around them at work: South American Cichlids:+++ I love the natural colors of these guys, and they seem to be the most intelligent/interesting to watch outside of predators. One of my favorite groups. Angelfish:+ Very cool fins...

Yep should be! I kept a group of them with my platies in perfect harmony for quite a while.

    What are you doing today?

Might be doing this soon myself lol 😂 Last time my platies had fry they were all eaten, but now my tank is much junglier and so far it’s been 3-4 weeks and they’re all doing fine and growing!

Interesting reflections between the internet’s advice on fish stores vs actually working at one. I think the mantra of “don’t trust anything the employee tells you” overall does more good than harm. But that doesn’t mean it’s literally true. Fish store employees aren’t evil, and, at least at an...

    The fish toilet

I doubt it works and I’ve heard the other employees don’t like them, but our store carries a betta tank with an “automatic water change” button. You press something and it sucks water from the bottom of the tank into a removable cartridge that can be dumped.

    The fish toilet

Are they marketing it as a literal toilet for fish? The picture looks to me like it’s just an over complicated water change tool. (“Flush” out some water with a turn of a knob; looks like debris gets caught in that cartridge on the left? Idk.)

Slowly learning about saltwater from working at the store!

They’re “snowflake moray eels”; idk if that’s a “true” moray or just named after it, like “koi” bettas
