    Sumo loaches and shrimp

I’ve never heard of a sumo loach but I think Kuhli loaches are usually fine with them.

    Unpopular Opinions (fish related)

Y'all seem to be having an existential crisis over cycling products, but I dropped in a few zebra danios, a handful of plants, and used stability as recommended and was cycled in 2 weeks. Never had any problems, fish were active and colorful as can be, and growing fast too.

    Limia?!

I was very surprised to find out that my LFS has Limia livebearers now! I’m really tempted to buy some. @emeraldking, you know a lot abt livebearers. Is there anything special I should know about them/any reason I shouldn’t get them in my tank? (platies, zebra danios, Pygmy Cories, Cherry...

You should definitely enter! We have so few entrants so far. I haven’t entered yet because I’m getting new fish later today and want the entry to show that.

    Rio Ucayali Biotope Project

Looking good! I'd love to do a tank of this type at some point, complete with a breeding pair of rams or apistos. I'm liking the move to the 20 long instead, the shallower design makes the floating plants and driftwood pop more. The dark wood of the stand works well with it too.

Can i keep a small shoal of Otoginglus in small gravel

Because they are wild caught, they do not know how to eat these yet at the time you buy them usually. If they do not have real biofilm, they will not live long enough to figure the other stuff out.

What are good peaceful nano fish to keep with platys?

It’s so hard to find tankmates that fit with Platy water parameters 😤

African Vampire shrimp... peaceful to each other???

Vampire shrimp always seemed so cool and alien to me that I could never figure out what kind of tank mates one would even put them with.

Part of my shrimp or a parasite?

Two of my shrimp have now molted and lost the parasite. Do you think I still need to worry about treating the tank?

:P back to the drawing board lol. I think I do remember looking into them before and concluding that.

What are good peaceful nano fish to keep with platys?

I think I’m gonna go with chili rasboras. I still think the scarlet badis are really cool, but they would do better in a tank designed around them since they have some unique challenges. I just discovered a species called corydoras Habrosus (“Salt and Pepper Cory”). They’re closely related to...

    Favorite fish foods

I use bug bites as my main staple, and repashy soilent green every now and then for the platies and otos. I have different-sized fish in the tank, so I've learned to crush up the bug bites pellets into varying sizes before I drop them in, that way the large fish will grab the big bits while the...

    Today's a new day.

I had the same thing happen with my pygmy cories. Bought ten, had all but 3 die in the first few days, and the other two unrelatedly in the next few weeks (one had a deformity, the other just disappeared), but the remaining one is healthy as can be! I think that they were unhealthy at the store...

What substrate is best for a planted tank?

I chose gravel originally because I liked the aesthetics and it seemed like less trouble, but looking back I wish I had done sand. There are a lot of interesting fish that need sand to support their normal lifestyle.

    New and Improved

I noticed the new home page! Although the "photos" bar on that page seems a little funky. I expected it to be the same as the gallery page, but upon further inspection it seems to just be a random sample of photos posted to the forum over the years? I got one from 2008 lol. edit: and now from 2005!

    Caves

Honestly, I think “have fun with the aquascape” would be my advice to all new fish keepers. Don’t just throw in some props and call it a day. Creating an environment you’re proud of makes the tank more enjoyable for you AND the fish!

    Caves

I would say the most important thing would be to just have interesting rock shapes for them to explore. This will both provide a surface for them to eat algae off of, and provide an interesting and safe-feeling environment for them. I don’t know that they necessarily pick one cave to “live” in.
