What kind of filter do you think would be best for apistos? I understand they like slow water. My first tank came used with a fluval HOB, so I’ve never had to shop for filters before. My dad, who used to own an LFS, likes the Penguin biowheel filters, so I’m looking at those, but I don’t really...

Weird old posts from 2000s lol

Believe it or not, they share a common ancestor lol. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_public_school_football_games?wprov=sfti1 Although as an American I also think it’s weird

Cool, that about what I was hoping the answer would be! I don’t need it to be “blackwater” proper, but I was excited to have a tea-colored, leaf-littered tank because that’s something I can’t do in my other, hardwater tank. I will make sure to get plants too.

Interesting new super easy way to feed Repashi… especially to your aufwuchs eaters

Here’s one of my thicc bois. Happy otos make me happy 😃. When I got them they were very skinny, as you can see in this picture

    Cleaning substrate

????? No one’s talking about having a bare-bottom tank. OP was asking how deep into the substrate you should stick the gravel vac.

    Cleaning substrate

I understand the arguments against gravel vac-ing on paper, but in my experience it just doesn’t work out in practice. If I don’t vacuum the gravel, it gets full of detritus that pollutes the whole tank every time I try to move the gravel at all. It might be good for the plants, but that doesn’t...

    Plans, Plans…

It’s weird, I figured that, as a SA cichlid, most people would put apistos in an Amazon-style, blackwater-type tank, you know leaf litter and driftwood and not a ton of plants. But it seems like most apisto tanks I see online are just normal planted-community-tank style aquascaping. Is the...

    Re-homing success

That’s actually a really interesting origin story! Much more interesting than having them in a tank

Weird old posts from 2000s lol

So since the front page now shows random pictures from the forum through the years… I have now been notified of the existence of the forum’s old “Rogue’s Gallery” thread for people to post real-life pictures of themselves. I can’t believe that everyone would just reveal themselves and their kids...

    Received a 10 Gallon from a Neighbor/Friend.

In a 10 gallon with hard water, you could absolutely do some Cherry Shrimp! Petsmart doesn’t normally have them, but many LFS (local fish stores) will. They’re a little bit delicate but they will also breed readily once you’ve got them situated. White Clouds shouldn’t bother them as long as you...

    Re-homing success

Yeah it’s a glo-fish white skirt tetra, either injected with dye or modified to produce pigment. Unfortunately stocked by even some of the more hobbyist-oriented LFS I’ve seen. I guess Little Timmys like them.

    Plans, Plans…

Plans so far: Setup -I can acquire a 20 long from dad’s coworker. -Need to buy a filter and heater. -Either sand substrate OR a some aquasoil that I bought for my other tank and never used. Aquascape -I can get it started with a few new plants/rocks/sticks and a few borrowed from my other tank...

According to SeriouslyFish that’s within MacMasteri parameters, although to make it perfect I could lower the pH a little

    Plans, Plans…

Ok my tap water is abt 25 ppm hardness so i think I’m good on that front. I don’t know the pH exactly but iirc it’s between 6.8-7.2

    pet shop endler

It’s worked fine for my Cherry shrimp, which are surely more delicate than endlers.

    pet shop endler

    Huh. I didn’t know that

So if I use Dan’s Fish it looks like shipping is 39.99? I guess that’s in addition to the $70 for the fish themselves? I might see if my LFS can order one

    Plans, Plans…

I don’t have a test strip on hand, but from my memory my tap water is definitely soft enough for soft water fish, but I doubt it’s soft enough for breeding macmasteri. I think I was overthinking it earlier; given my record with platies I’m not in any danger of being overrun by fry lol 😂. How...

    Plans, Plans…

Basically I love the idea of having a nuptial pair, but I don’t want to get in over my head if they’re going to breed like rabbits and cause me to have to figure out what to do with all the babies. I wouldn’t mind having a brood to sell to the LFS every now and then, but when we talk abt regular...

    Plans, Plans…

So would keeping a breeding pair naturally result in constant breeding/killing babies if I don’t remove them, or would they not breed unless I induced it with the right conditions?

Looking at some more varieties, I really like MacMasteri and Hongsloi. I already liked that look in my head but I didn’t know what species it was.

    A Beginner's 20g Long Aquarium (Platys + Pygmy Corys)

Got carried away while integrating the new pothos (currently suspended by some surprisingly competent paperclips) and ended up rearranging the aqua scape a little bit! I also removed the sponge over the filter intake, because I noticed the substrate was annoyingly dusty despite gravel vac-ing...

    Plans, Plans…

I’ve been toying more and more with the idea of getting a second tank, and the fish I really want to do is Apistos. However, I have some questions. First off, I can’t decide between a single male and a breeding pair. I really love the idea of breeding fish in general, and I also really like the...

    How to anchor pothos?

I got some pothos today to fill out the top space of the aquarium! I liked the way it looked in a friend’s tank because it grows lots of roots at the top of the tank without having to care for 10 million individual delicate floaters (been having trouble with red-roots). His tank had a lot of...

If you generalize a little... what kind of fish do you like???

Another dream tank is tanganyikan cichlids, but I don’t feel ready for that any time soon.

If you generalize a little... what kind of fish do you like???

I also like it when fish have bright, complex patterns; I prefer it to bright solid colors, that’s why I got painted platies instead of another type.

If you generalize a little... what kind of fish do you like???

I love biotope aquariums (although my tank isn’t one), and I love having fish that can breed. I generally like Asian fish better than Amazon (loaches>plecos; danios/rasboras/barbs>tetras; shrimp>absence of shrimp), but the SA dwarf cichlids, especially Apistos, have grown on me a lot. I also...

    Aurora

It’s really weird to me that a solar storm could cause aurora down to Florida without some sort of massive infrastructure damage. It’s even weirder to me that I somehow didn’t hear about it until after.

    10g Badis and Firefrog Palace

That’s a really cute lil tank! The floating island is a fun idea. I bet it’ll look lovely when it’s fully established/decorated. Can we get a full tank shot?

Fun Facts We Didn't Need To Know

The Latin word “canis/canem” (from whence we get “canine”) is cognate (descended from the same root) with English “hound”.

Molly is very big - normal??

Yeah adult mollies grow to 5-7 inches and need a 30 gallon or so. If you want something similar but smaller, Platys stay around 2-3 inches and are suitable for a 20 gallon or *maybe* a little smaller? (I’m not an expert here) Guppies and endlers are in the same family and stay about 1 inch, and...

Do you guys not like tank backgrounds???

I enjoy a black or neutral one for contrast, but I don't mind having no background. I don't like backgrounds that have more aquascape/fish in them, I think it looks weird and draws visual attention away from the real aquascape and fish. If half the perceived "aquascape" is just a print, then...
