    Short lived surprise

Would that be best over the whole tank? The humidity level is quite high in that tank as the hood completely encloses it. I've noticed when I do water changes if I shut the lid just for a few minutes there is vapour on the glass. I do think I may end up buying another smaller tank and move Big...

    Short lived surprise

I think I'm going to rename the breeding male. They've all had nicknames to help me identify them so we have Split Fin (female no 1 who spawned yesterday and is displaying breeding colours again, has a notch out of her tail fin), Solid Maybe (female no 2 who spawned today, for a while I couldn't...

Maybe play them some romantic music while you turn down the lights for them . Fingers crossed for you.

    Short lived surprise

Breeding net has gone in as it looked like I'd lost some eggs already so decided to put it in. Lost some eggs getting it in but I think I've salvaged the majority. The female who spawned yesterday is displaying breeding colours again so may have another batch from her soon.

    Short lived surprise

I do like ember tetras, looking forward to seeing your fry when you get them. There's definitely eggs in the nest. I was a little bit worried earlier as when I checked I couldn't see any but checked again and I can see eggs. Male is guarding them closely at that minute.

    Floating Plants

I have Salvinia in my tanks. Grows fast and gives good coverage. I buy 99% of my plants from tropica sellers to avoid bringing in anything nasty into the tanks like the damselfly larvae that got a ride into one tank on a plant from my closest LFS.

    Short lived surprise

That is a lot of tetras! Shows how good your tanks are though. I'd love to breed my 2 Betta Splendens because I think I would get some lovely fish out of them but I've no space to split the fry up as they mature so that is a project that will have to wait until I have a bigger house.

    Short lived surprise

I've got 3 LFS to ask if they'll take them if I get fry that survive. One is the one I bought them from who were quite pleased themselves to hear they were breeding as they're closest to my work and the cheapest so the ones I got the breeding net from. Another is my favourite which is a bit...

    Short lived surprise

Thank you, I'm very happy about this. They're not as flashy as the Splendens but they are stunning little fish with the most beautiful glowing blue blue eyes. Not sure what I'll do with fry if I get them but one step at a time. If this spawning doesn't work out there's always female no.3 who's...

    Short lived surprise

Popped to the LFS after work to pick up a breeding net. Got back, went to put it in my room where the tank is, glanced at the tank to make sure the male definitely wasn't guarding the nest anymore and found myself watching a fishy porno. It seems that the other female who I did actually see...

I wouldn't risk 2 male Bettas together, they will kill each other.

    Short lived surprise

I acquired a group of Betta coccina a few weeks ago and when I went to feed them last night I noticed eggs in the bubble nest which I was very happy to see. Unfortunately when I checked this morning the eggs have been eaten. I presume either the other females raided it as I did see one doing...

    Substrate Problem, Fish in bags

It does settle eventually, these days even when I disturb it by adding plants etc I just get a little puff of colour then it settles. At first it felt like you just had to look at it and it would start leeching colour again.

    Fish addiction....

Welcome to the club. Just remind them there are far more expensive hobbies out there.

    Substrate Problem, Fish in bags

I have the same substrate in one of my tanks and, I'll be honest, it took weeks to clear up even with washing it first. Massive water changes are your friend with the vacuum right in the substrate. Might be an idea to pick up a big storage container and use it as a temporary tank while you're...

What a stunning boy! And also thank you, I've now got the Imperial March stuck in my head on repeat

    New Betta

That moss grows like it's on steroids. I hacked it right back not too long ago because it was several inches long and so thick. The addiction is real, I've been looking at houses and a serious consideration is could I have a fish room in it.

    New Betta

I would also love a room full of Bettas. Someone near me is selling a stand with 8 tanks that all look to be about 5 gallons for a decent price, I just have nowhere to put it or I'd have rented a van to go get it. I'd like some more wild Bettas too, the maidenhead near me has some in at the...

    Help my arowana

Rubbing would suggest it's irritating him. I use a 10 litre bucket for water changes on my 110 litre tank which is much easier and quicker than jugs. I also tend to let the water sit for about 5-10 minutes or so before it goes in the tank just to let the declorinator mix through completely.
  22. Sylvan

    New Betta

The whole tank is 7 gallons if I remember right but it's a divided tank so her section is 2.5, maybe slightly more as I feel like the middle section is slightly smaller than the 2 end sections but that may just be a trick of the light.

    New Betta

I picked up a female Betta on New Year's eve. My favourite LFS has a tank full of stunning females and when the employee and I were at the tank, I asked for a red and white to match Triton, she pointed a different one out that I agreed on but when she put the net in this one swam straight in so...

    Help my arowana

I use Tetra Aquasafe which is 5ml to every 10l being added and use a 5ml syringe to add it as for the small tanks I use a 2l jug and that's the level of maths I'm comfortable with in a hobby. Trying to use two different measuring systems would break my brain. As for eating I have no idea, never...

    Help my arowana

A big water change won't kill him unless you don't declorinate the water first. I do 70%+ water changes in my tanks every week and it is generally recommended to do big weekly water changes as you remove more of the waste in the water at once.

    How to clean syphon?

Personally I'd buy another one so I could be sure of no contamination. Failing that I'd run hot water through the siphon then leave it to dry and give 24/48 hours before using it on the other other tank.

    Preparing first tank

Pets at home sell the tropica plants that cultivated from a cell culture so don't bring snails etc into your tank.

Just tell him it could be worse, it could be horses instead and suddenly the fish will look like a nice cheap alternative.

Does anyone else's Betta do this?

That's what my other Betta, Pisces does, he ignores everything in his tank apart from having the occasional stand off with a shrimp when they've grabbed a bit of food that he's dropped and even then the shrimp win every time. I noticed there was a damselfly larvae in his tank last night and he's...

His poor tail! Though he will be stunning once he recovers.

Does anyone else's Betta do this?

Triton, the Betta in my divided tank, gets very wound up at snails crawling up the front of his tank. He flares up at them like they're a rival male, tail and gills at full attention, until he eventually knocks them off but he spends a good five minutes displaying and nudging them. As soon as...

Ive looked everywhere for answers! Can anybody tell me what is going on here with my betta??

Her scales look like they're sticking out/pine coning which is a dropsy symptom. If it is dropsy and it's that far progressed I doubt you have much chance of saving her. Do you know your water parameters i.e ammonia, nitrites and nitrates? How often do you change her water? How big is the vase...

What's Santa bringing you for Christmas...

If I put the wishlist on here you'd all be reading it until next week, it's rather long. I'm planning to take a trip to my favourite LFS to treat myself before Christmas as they've just restocked so some more Kubotai rasboras and blue shrimp are a present to myself at the very least.

Any uk fish and animal attractions like this?

There's The Deep in Hull, no crocodiles or many large predatory fish but they do have an Amazon exhibit and a pair of sawfish. Its definitely worth a day trip. There is a dedicated crocodile place down south somewhere if you really want to see crocs. I don't know of many others, I'm in the...

    Kubotai turning gold?

I've changed a couple of things around in the tank during my water change and they've gone back to a normal green colour so if the two change again I'll try to video them. Also welcome back and thanks for replying. Glad it's not just mine then. If it wasn't for the fact they were definitely...

    Kubotai turning gold?

I've got 5 Kubotai rasboras and I've noticed that 2 of them are changing colour to quite a lovely golden colour. Both of the 2 are the more dominant of the group and they look healthy although one of them is the smallest of the group. The small one seems to change intermittently if that makes...
