    Super red bristlenose pleco

I just picked one up to keep in my qt. Just a little guy at barely 1.5” long. Which, leads me to my excitement of the day.....I came home from work and of course had to check on the new fella. Which, couldn’t find it anywhere. Started lifting decorations to seem if it managed to get stuck...

Small schooling fish to go with GBRs in 30 gallon long

X-ray (pristella) tetras hang in a pretty tight school. I think they stay relatively small. They definitely aren’t the most colorful, but they do have cool markings on their fins

How do you get your Christmas moss to do so well??? Mine is still basically on the anchor rock I got it on.

    Freshwater tank lighting

I just replaced my lights too. I ended up with the finnex planted 24/7 crv. Just a couple days now and it’s so much better than the hood set up I had before. Easy transition between light intensity changes. I was weighing the current satellite plus as well. But pulled the trigger on the finnex...

    Sprout!!!

I look forward to the day I’m trimming my fish tank plants. I already gotta mow my lawn and scoop dog poo. If only they had a gravel vacuum for dog poo and I may start to find that as entertaining as the fish poo

    Sprout!!!

I feel like a proud papa, my jungle Val has sprouted its first shoot! I love how with this hobby these little accomplishments feel so huge!

    Friends for long-finned skirt tetras

If you get similar shaped tetras they may loosely shoal(sp?) together, my X-rays do with my Buenos Aires even tho there’s a considerable size difference

    Fish naming.....

I have names for the guys you can tell apart from the others...blood parrot=cheetoo, firemouth=Pablo, Bristlenose Pleco=big al, red tail black shark=sharkie, named my Buenos Aires school the cartel, haven’t named my school of x-ray tetras yet gotta think of something good for them hahah.

    Powerheads...

still look like too much? The little guys just cruise in the current there. It’s right in the middle, and seems like their favorite place to hang. would adding an actual store bought powerhead filter attachment slow the flow down more? I currently just have a intake cover from an old hob...

    Powerheads...

It’s a mix of Buenos Aires and X-ray tetras, a blood parrot, a firemouth, and a red tailed black shark. It doesn’t look like anyone is just blowing around in the current.... Here’s a vid....

How do you know if you have too much current, not enough, just right?

    New light

Thanks! It’s been a lot of adjustment to get it looking how I want. Now if only the turtle would stop destroying nearly every live plant I put in there (anubias, a fancy leaf Java fern, and working on the Amazon sword now ?). it definitely seems like it’s just an adjustment phase for the tetras...

    New light

They don’t seem to be struggling. Just zipping around the glass under the new light. Maybe it’s just the change and they are checking it all out.

    New light

So I put a new light to brighten up a side of my tank, and now my BA tetras are spending a good amount of time under it surfing the glass. Now it is also where my main outtake is, so they could also be playing in the current, now that it’s brighter there they feel safer? Or less safe, hence the...

    DIY slate aquascaping

Well, finished product. First pic is ‘before’, next 3 are the final. Also added a Amazon sword and two winter moss rocks (hoping they grow out on the driftwood, before the turtle eats them all up)

    Changing the scape

So my newly built slate decor is ready to go in the tank, but I have to remove the old rocks to get them to fit right. Should I leave some of the old stuff in to keep my cycle from crashing?

    DIY slate aquascaping

Drying my slate....used the hammer last night to smash up the tiles, soaked overnight, sanded down all the edges, rinsed, now drying. Next comes the building of structures

    DIY slate aquascaping

Has anyone used slate/shale pavers say from Home Depot? I’ve seen some vids on youtube of it being done, just breaking them up with a hammer and gluing them together. Just wanted to see if I can get some first hand experience and or pics.

Where I’m at with my set up....

So quick update for you, I added one more of the tetras, and I don’t know if it’s because it’s a female (the rest look like males), or just the extra comfort, but they are shoaling so much better. They were active before, but just with that one new pal they are way more a social grouping. I...

Where I’m at with my set up....

At the moment all I have are two different types of Java fern, and they haven’t even nibbled it. I plan on adding an Anubias next. (I like the broad leaves) Hopefully it works out just as well.

Where I’m at with my set up....

I haven’t seen any kind of issue with Cheeto (my blood parrot). He’s only about a week and a half into the mix, so still a little shy. But I see the trio (BP, firemouth, and the red tail) cruising around the bottom together all the time. It even spends time ‘hiding’ directly under the turtle. Or...

Where I’m at with my set up....

I actually found him as he was crossing the street in my old neighborhood. We don’t have wild res here on Maui, so I took him in. So, I know I’ve had him about 3-3.5 years, so, he’s at least that old ??‍♂️
