    Tetra safestart

As of now I have a leafy plant and three small moss balls. Until I can get more, will those be sufficient in addition to the safestart? I can definitely add them to the priority list

    Today is the day!

Do you think it is safe to move my fish into the 10 gallon? He's not looking too hot and while neither tanks are cycled, the 10gallon will be given the necessary bacteria tomorrow. I was asking for emergency advice from someone on tumblr and they asked if Hank has been eating. He has certainly...

    Today is the day!

The test kit was the API 5 in 1 test strips. I was mainly looking for one that tested ammonia, but I'm not sure whether it does or not. Mine tests for pH, KH, GH, and nitrate and nitrite. Unless pH is ammonia, I think I may have grabbed the only kit in the store that wasn't what I wanted :(

    Tank progress

Heater and filter have been added! Exciting. I may move over one or two of Hank's plants because I think I read that they could help with the startup.

What is your recommended amount of water change? I also thought 14 days sounded off.

    Tetra safestart

When you use safestart, do you wait 24 hours after dechlorinating to use it? Also, I'm wondering if the fish can go in at the same time, or if I should wait for it to settle in

    Tank progress

I'm going to record the progress of the set up of my new 10 gallon tank here, feel free to tune in! I didn't have a 5 gallon bucket, but I did have a new unused trash can that I wiped down. It took me 5 trips but my tank is now full of crystal clear water! It's already much brighter than the...

    Tetra safestart

The bottle of my safestart was incredibly vague, so I did a little digging and found this article: https://aquanswers.com/api-quick-start-vs-tetra-safestart-work/ Is this a trustworthy site, and does anyone notice anything I should do differently than the advice listed? If not, I will use it as...

    Today is the day!

Mission successful! I brought home a heater, the safestart, and the test strips. Unfortunately those three things cost a lot, so I wasn't able to get him any more decor this time around. Until I can get him the pieces I have my eye on, should his current plants and decorations be bunched close...

    Today is the day!

I will keep an eye out for Salvinia! I'm definitely hoping my camera can take pictures in this new tank because I am dying to show my betta off but all I can get are closeups. Nonetheless I will probably be posting pictures of the set up tank for before and after pics! It will be a little sparse...

    Today is the day!

He absolutely does! He has three little ones and he enjoys squishing himself between the edge of the glass and the moss balls for nap time. It's cute now but I legit thought he got trapped and died the first time. Definitely panicked a little

    Today is the day!

So excited to be moving from the beginner help section to the discussion section :) Today, once the snow clears off the roads a little later (it is APRIL) I will be heading into the pet store to get the remaining supplies before moving Hank into his new 10 gallon! My checklist is a 10g...

    Cycling help

I will definitely still be monitoring the tank, and if the safestart doesnt work i will cycle the tank as usual, but this is hopefully going to get him into better living conditions immediately, rather than in 2-6 weeks

    Cycling help

Awesome, I feel much more confident that I know what to do now. As a side question, what do you guys use to change the water in your larger tanks? I'm currently unsure how to even fill my 10g up as my tank and kitchen sink are as far away from each other as physically possible without exiting...

    Cycling help

So using this knowledge my adjustments are to introduce the fish, and do 50% water changes every week? Since the bacteria is already there in amounts to reduce ammonia and nitrite immediately, is a test kit still recommended? Thank you!
  22. Quin

Will keep that in mind! Making a run to the pet store soon, so I'll be on the look out for those

    Active .vs. Non active members?

I am incredibly new to this forum, and I plan to stay! This is my first forum I've ever really taken part of, so I can't say for sure what my habits will be once my new fish settles in and I can finally stop hovering over him, but I think I'm a curious enough person that I'll enjoy the fun. Even...

    Cycling help

Awesome! So the revised plan would be: 1. Treat the water (dechlorinator solution and tetra safestart) 2. Slowly introduce the fish as the source of ammonia 3. Test tank and partial water change daily 4. Once the tank reaches no amounts of ammonia, nitrate, or nitrite then it has been...

    Cycling help

So if I use safe start cycling is no longer necessary? Does that mean that I treat the tank, maybe wait a little bit, add the fish, and then that's it?
  26. Quin

    Cycling help

Thank you guys so much! Treatment and test kits will be coming soon! I am super duper excited to get my little dude into a bigger tank, I think it will suit him much better and give him enough perking to really flaunt his colors!

    Cycling help

Okay so! I will be cycling my new 10gallon tank and I'd like to be sure I have everything right before I begin. Materials: 1. Tetra safe start or some source of ammonia? I'm not sure about this part 2. Test kit that reads ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate Process: -After the tank is set up...

10 gallon or 5 for betta and owner with a budget

That's really useful to know! Thank you, I'll be sure to implement that Also as an edit: there were two cylinder, one was super skinny that I attached to the filter because it fit, and the other one I think may be a bubbler? I don't think anything electric in the tank works so I'll probably be...

10 gallon or 5 for betta and owner with a budget

Thank you guys for your advice! I asked to check out the tank and when I arrived they were holding it at the door for me, so I am now the proud new owner of a 10 gallon! I will be working on assembling it some tonight and a lot tomorrow, because it's old and has no instruction manual and I have...

10 gallon or 5 for betta and owner with a budget

The only things I currently have are a 1-5 gallon heater, 5 gallon filter, 3 moss balls, one plant rooted in gravel, gravel, and an artificial log hide plus a hide that didn't fit in his tank. The walmart kit came at the recommendation of one of the admins from my last thread, but I will keep in...

10 gallon or 5 for betta and owner with a budget

Hi there! Just this morning we finished discussing a thread about the health of my new betta Hank S. Sushi (black orchid male.) My friend's mom has a 10 gallon, which I think sounds awesome. I'm just wondering before I say I'll take it, is this the best for my betta? The heater and filters I...

Betta tank cover and filter questions

I don't think anything that is in my tank currently is for sure permanent as we found out last night it was not 5 gallons like I initially assumed so he will be getting a much nicer one as soon as I can. As for tank pictures, because the black filter is backed by a black tv and mirror it's very...

    Sushi man!

After a lot of panicking, posting, and research yesterday I'm happy to announce my big man Hank S. Sushi! He's a black orchid betta, and I'm on the hunt for a bigger tank for him and cycling treatments and test kits. I did have a minor heart attack this morning because my dad turned off the...

New betta at top of tank?

Hank S. Sushi is looking like he's going to be my real first fish! I think that since I'm getting a new tank anyways I may do a fish out cycle in that one and just keep a really close eye on him with frequent water changes until his new home is ready! Thank you thank you thank you to all of you...

New betta at top of tank?

Thank you all so much for your help! Unfortunately the tank was an old one from our shelf, but either way the store does not take returns right now due to current events. However, I definitely will not be keeping my fish in a small tank and I have numerous friends who have kept fish, so I will...

Betta tank cover and filter questions

I thought I needed small gaps so that the betta could have breathing holes? Also, I have a lot of research to do either way, but I'm not really sure what an HOB or a baffle are. Could you explain? Thank you so much!

New betta at top of tank?

It's possible my measurements were off, but using inches I got 1.7. I'm willing to accept this as the answer, but visually I believe I could fit more than two gallons of water in the tank and would appreciate a second opinion. Also, I completely forgot that I started online classes today. It is...
