Sponges will last for years, I just swish mine about once a month or so in the tank water in a bucket (water taken during water change) Some people squish them like a kitchen sponge but I can't really say I do!

Bettas rest quite a lot actually, I’ve a tall anubias in my Betta’s tank so he can rest on leaves near the surface.

The tap water will pretty much remove or kill any bb build up. You need to just lightly rinse anything in a bucket of tank water (day, during the WC)

The link on here for cycling a tank stipulates an ammonia level of 3ppm. I highly imagine there’s not enough ammonia to enable the bb to grow. I am cycling one fish less myself and it’s going really well by using this guide...

Is he on the floor of the tank? What are the results from your water test, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate. Is he alone or are there other fish, what’s he in, filter, heater. Any odd behaviour over the last few days? How long have you had him, how long has the tank been cycled?

Could you post pictures please of each strip result against the grading as the guys here will be able to help with the results :)

My only guess would be that there’s still not enough bacteria, even for a cycled sponge, although I do have concerns that it would have bb after being in transit. Although you do get the bottles of bacteria. I think temperature might affect bb too?

I think a lot of the nano fish are still too much for this as they need space to dart about. To be honest, I would say snails or a couple shrimps at most. I certainly wouldn’t put a Betta in there. My Betta has a 30L for himself and by some internet posts I’ve seen, even that is slightly too...

What size tank, what other fish? What’s the temperature of the tank? Sorry for the 40 questions but it’ll help the more experienced provide advice
