Are you ensuring or do you have a cycled tank? Whole process can take about 4,5 even 6 weeks?

What are the dimensions of the tank you have in mind?

Do all your plants in the tank need the 10-12 hours of light? Are you able to use a dimmer option on the lights to prevent the harshness of it? What exact fertiliser do you use and how much/how often?

Do you use a gravel vac? A lot of us here also change 50-75% per week including cleaning the substrate. I'm wondering if increasing this will help you?

Just read through all this and wanted to reassure you that you're not failing at this or doing a bad job, I myself didn't do enough research and got bad advice from a LFS who basically fed me a load of BS, I ended up doing a fish in cycle. It wasn't the best way to start but it sure taught me so...

Bless lil fishy. Have you added anything to the tank? Or been doing daily water changes? Looks like scale damage but I’m not an expert.

Personally I just use play sand, in the UK from Argos. Others use products from Tropica I think but the nutrients deteriorate after a year anyway, so you’d have to continue using fertiliser anyway or change the substrate. @Byron is knowledgeable as is @essjay on this

White sand is not advised by a large percentage of fish keepers, it is unnatural for fish to have a white base for them not to blend into.

@essjay I think essay kept frogs and recommends a frog only tank for many reasons. Happily corrected but I think frogs are near blind, risk of starvation even with sinking food, and risk of thinking fish tails are food.

What algae eater have you got in the tank, some are renowned for not even eating a lot of it.
