If you are very insistent on keeping your pleco, get a 6 foot or larger tank. A 75 gallon is the same length as a 55, and so would not be that much better. If you are not willing to get a 6ft or larger, you should see about rehoming your pleco.

Honestly, even if it doesn't pan out I totally pan on keeping the set up. I really love the singleton one I have now, and can always add other fish to the tank if I get no action in a year or two.

Right now, new 6 foot tanks are going for around $1000 for tank and stand without equipment.

I really like both AquaClear and Tidal filters. Both have adjustable flow and lots of capacity. I would get one that would work for your eveual 20 gallon, so you do not have to switch filters again later.

I am picking up 2 full set ups of 55 gallon tanks (I only need a stand for 1). I am paying $150 for the pair. Which seems reasonable. Then I see for a tank and stand only, a 125 gallon going for $400. Which for a 20year old tank, and a handmade stand doesn't seem super reasonable.
