Carbon cartridge and filter part alternatives?

I wouldn't get rid of the sponge unless it is falling apart. Rinse it in the old tank water when you do a water change. Put the sponge with larger pores in the flow portion first, then the denser sponge or filter material.

    Nerites for 10 gallon

It depends on what you have in the tank. I had my 10 gallon filled with leaves and driftwood, and they will eat the biofilm off of that. I had 3 nerites in there, but eventually moved one out. You also have other snails in there, which is a consideration on natural food supply. 2 is a good...

You can buy sheets of filter foam online. My local petco has filter foam I can cut down to size for my tanks.

    can i request things?

One lfs lets me look at the list their distributors, and has me order what I want. I don't often because it is an hour drive there. My closer store tries to get me what I want, but they are a smaller place.

    Ultimate frustrations?

This is going to sounds petty, but I hate that most cat food bags don't have resealable packaging. I am already paying $35 for 18 lbs of cat food. Why not make the package a little more robust and useful?

    Baby Goldbreast/Trout Goodeids!

My trio of Goldbreast (AKA Trout) Goodieds have finally given me a batch of fry! I hadn't checked the tank in a couple of days, so they might be a few days old already. They are born pretty large, and I am super excited.

Nice and secure then! That would actually be really reassuring. I live in a 70 year old, rundown apartment building.

Anyone have experience with double tank stands?

Make sure you are placing your stand carefully too. I have heard a couple of horror stories of people getting a double 55 or 75 stand and the floor being damaged over time from the combined weight on the four little feet. I don't think I would get a double stand for anything larger than a 29 gallon.

Best animal to kill pond snails?

You are better off manually removing them. Put a piece of blanched vegetable in the tank for about an hour. The snails will be crawling on it. Throw it away. Repeat as needed. Remove snail eggs from glass, nplants and decoration. The excess of snails seems to indicate you are overfeeding the betta.

How does one afford this hobby??

I buy a lot of my stuff used. I got 5 tanks from a retired angelfish breeder, she had them stored in her garage for about 10 years, and had used them for 10 years before that. Only had to reseal two of my used tanks so far (10 out of my 15). I use inexpensive substrates, so my biggest expense...

    Hair Algae treatment recommendations please

The only tank I ever had hair algae in was mostly from too much light (right across from a window and I like to leave my tank lights on most of the day) and not enough plants. I would remove it manually as much as possible. I used a plastic fork and aqua scaping tweezers in the hard to reach...

Best Non-Fish Item Used For Fish Purposes

The turkey baster I have used to feed my fish and to spot clean in my small tanks between water changes. The spoon and bottle brush are new ones. I wouldn't have thought use cleaning scrub pads, but it makes sense and is quite a bit cheaper than purpose branded stuff.

Best Non-Fish Item Used For Fish Purposes

One cool thing that I found today is these bamboo skewers, meant for use in shiskabobs and outdoor camping stuff. If you are buying used, double check to make sure the seals are good and the frame is in good condition, you don't want the silicone to be hard or peeling and make sure there is absolutely no warping on the frame.
