I wouldn't get rid of the sponge unless it is falling apart. Rinse it in the old tank water when you do a water change. Put the sponge with larger pores in the flow portion first, then the denser sponge or filter material.

Make sure you are placing your stand carefully too. I have heard a couple of horror stories of people getting a double 55 or 75 stand and the floor being damaged over time from the combined weight on the four little feet. You are better off manually removing them. Put a piece of blanched vegetable in the tank for about an hour. The snails will be crawling on it. Throw it away. Repeat as needed. Remove snail eggs from glass,nplants and decoration. The excess of snails seems to indicate you are overfeeding the betta.

Oh, I also buy polyester pillow filling instead of "water polishing pads". Same stuff, but about $5 worth has lasted me almost 2 years.
