Something I noticed this morning… pleco’s that chew on wood… raise their own water tannin levels…

It might be one of those “duh” moments, but I didn’t know, when I bought my 1st King Tiger pleco’s, that they liked to chew on wood… I have had wood eating pleco’s before, and they had very visible teeth, and the King Tigers, have the typical bristle teeth… but that tank has polished river rock...

Another new and interesting Hillstream on it’s way…

3rd valve, with no one attached yet, will run upstairs to the 250 gallon tank, when I get it in place… this manifold sits just left of my RO unit… you can see the edge of the plate that holds the pressure pump for the RO efficiency, and the filters, on the right edge of this picture

Another new and interesting Hillstream on it’s way…

Tin Foil tank is full of blended water ( topped it off with RO ) which means my manifold is done for 2 regional lines, my main tank group, and the other side of the house to the new Tin Foil tank… it’ll still be a couple days, until the RO catches up from filling the Tin Foil tank, I have a new...

Another new and interesting Hillstream on it’s way…

this week the 5 adult Tin Foils move to a different tank… greatly reducing the bioload, and tank space in use… Allowing me to even more deeply dive into the Hillstream’s… I've got 4 of these on their way… https://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/homaloptera-orthogoniata/

I’m having some mold problems with Chinese Evergreen growing out of my tank…

mold is on the terrestrial part... the roots seem healthy

What to do when all your fishes hide under a leaf ?

maybe try adding some live foods, to encourage them out to hunt???

I’m having some mold problems with Chinese Evergreen growing out of my tank…

The plants always appear wet, and while it’s a highly flowing tank, there just isn’t that much water splashing out… I added a smaller fan to increase air flow around the plants above the tank, but I think the roots are drawing up too much water… I don’t think it’s the fault of the plant species...

Night time, day time, bright lights, and training…

So, at 1st light this morning, I can see 2 Hillstream’s, both adults, one Gold Ring, and one Vietnamese lizard… so they clearly are not nocturnal, if I can see only about 5 % of them

And I see they just got in some spotted blue tails

Night time, day time, bright lights, and training…

So, tonight I noticed an interesting thing about my Hillstream loaches… when you read about keeping them. It’s often mentioned they like bright lights… but I’m finding they don’t like bright lights, they like the results of bright light, the algae and biofilms… but mine also don’t seem to be...

    Fish nibbling on tube buildup

Sometimes even bigger fish, that you would think would graze on something bigger, work air lines, so it must accumulate more than tank surfaces…

    Fish nibbling on tube buildup

Yep, perfectly normal… as to why air lines seem to build up faster is beyond me, but dozens of my fish do the same

    Substrate observations

I use a lot of natural river gravel, of smaller size… rounded edges, and smaller than most gravel, but too big to be called sand… that has become one of my favorite substrates… But the bulk of my Cory’s are in a black sand bottom tank, with large river rock on one end… the Cory’s do graze in...

    Curiosity killed the cat…

A weird old saying, not related to aquariums… So a week or so ago, I added a couple LED strip, plant lights, to the side of my Hillstream tank, to encourage extra algae growth on that side, which they graze on…there is a row of emergent bamboo stalks along the wall, that blocks the bulk of the...

Any idea what this is on my African 3 lined glass cat???

Well that fish healed up well, I have to assume it was a spawning wound, probably poked by a barbed fin, during rambunctious “activities” They appear to be spawning again this morning… hopefully as they get older, they’ll learn to take it a little easier on each other

Canned a bunch of pints of freshly harvested Tilapia today… anything too small to fillet, got canned today…

Maybe try feeding twice a day???

I’ve not started feeding twice a day, but have noticed that if the food will stay in suspension longer, the angel is less aggressive at feeding time, the only exception so far, has been with the shrimp cocktails, and maybe that’s just “so good” it doesn’t want to share.. the flake food, and...

Doing it again… learned a lot last year… this year’s Tilapia

2 years ago, I bought 100 aquaponics grade. Which were supposed to be a mix of males and females, this last year, I bought 50 farm grade, that were supposed to be sexed and all males, I had some I raised from a pair I culled out from the previous year… I was really disappointed at the ones I...

Doing it again… learned a lot last year… this year’s Tilapia

Well 2 more Tilapia were sexed as females, and went into the end tank, that had the breeding pair in… and the rest got harvested… I was not happy with paying extra for the premium sexed as male fish… probably 1/4 to 1/3 were females, and much smaller… so, with some in the freezer from last years...

Can you have to many plants.

Plants are generally good for the water, and thus the fish… but at some point they could encroach enough, that there is not enough free swimming space… many smaller species, are happy going from leaf to leaf, but several species need free swimming space as well… I’m getting to the point of...

    Weather

We are harvesting Tilapia today, but my grow out tanks, out side have been wrapped up the last 3 days, below freezing lows, and only in the mid 50,s F. For high’s… today warmer than normal, so a good day to harvest fish…

    Bichir, in a community tank… very challenging…

I’ll have to fix my mess, I just wanted to post this, as there are several people starting with Bichirs Even though they are methodical, appearing slow, and don’t see very well, they are particularly voracious… I can’t imagine anything eating a 8-9 inch pleco… they should be compared to Pac Man...

Well, where did you come from???

The guppy is still swimming around the top of that pagoda, like it owns it… even though the Tin Foil barbs, are 8-10 inches long, they are still very good at leaving the small fish alone… I was worried when I added 5 Panda Garas to the tank, back when the Tin Foils were like 6 inches… the...

Maybe try feeding twice a day???

I picked up a good quality flake food today, a mix of krill flakes, and of spirolina flakes, and fed that 1st and 90% less of feeding time fighting tonight… I’m at least optimistic…

    Bichir, in a community tank… very challenging…

Mine is now 10-11, maybe 12 inches long, , kind of hard to tell, as it’s always half under something… by design, sliver dollars were supposed to be the main tank mates, because they “appear” too big for the Bichir to eat… but my eyes and his eyes aren’t seeing things the same… so far it’s left...
