    Life goes on in Africa…

Today’s picture of Africa… I think I’m going to move the older peace lily, ( root ball in the upper right corner ), to the other side, so the root ball is in the back ground, rather than the foreground… when viewing from this side ( this tank can be viewed from both sides, but is most viewed...

These look interesting... Crenicara punctulatum... they just got listed at a seller I buy from

one of the few sex changing fresh water fishes... https://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/25-perchlike-fishes/25d-perchlike-fishes-4-south-american-dwarf-cichlids/crenicara_punctulatum_checkerboard_cichlids_part_1_en/ anyone ever messed with these... I don't have room to add these to any tanks right...

    Rummy’s group spawning… again

These guys sure are active… they seem to spawn, once a week the school is currently 12-14 of them, and they seem to like to spawn at 1st light, so I get some activity to watch with my caffeine, in the morning… sometime, a few of those eggs are going to hatch… there shouldn’t be too much light...

Strange floating ball algae, intermixed with my Asian Water Moss

A little reading… it likes quiet waters, this is a really high flow tank, but the water moss forms a mat, and it seems to like to fill in the gaps so to speak, and gets protection from the flow, amongst the moss… I have an 8 inch floating plant ring above an Anubis that needs a tad more light...

Strange floating ball algae, intermixed with my Asian Water Moss

It’s doing really well in this one tank… there must have been some mixed in, with some of the watermoss I bought… I can separate it, but it’s a slow process… I’ve never had it in any of my tanks before… I haven’t seen the Zebra Oto’s eating it, that are in this tank, normal algae eaters aren’t...

Strange floating ball algae, intermixed with my Asian Water Moss

Guessing it’s even harder der to get rid of than lemna minor… but I also bet my Tilapia would gobble that stuff up, and in a well lit tank, it seems to reproduce as fast or faster than duckweed

Strange floating ball algae, intermixed with my Asian Water Moss

There was this new “super food” that was a tiny duckweed, but it’s not native to the US, so I’ve never seen that in person…

Strange floating ball algae, intermixed with my Asian Water Moss

I’ve not seen this before… to the naked eye, it almost looks like duckweed ( it’s not lemna minor anyway )… 1st picture is from below… 2nd picture is on a long handled spoon with 1/8 inch holes, for scale, ( so the individual balls are tiny ), that I use to move around a the floating plants

    unheated greenhouse fish ideas

I certainly understand, if you’re wanting to run them with no heaters… but adding one, can stabilize your water temperature better, and it’s surprisingly good as a radiant heater for your greenhouse… I have an unheated, but insulated entryway into the house, the in the deepest winter, pop cans...

Right or wrong, this is what I’m doing… a sort of soft sanitize

I went with white sand this time… and no hard scape, to allow more free swimming area… landscaping will be the roots, some of them are over 2 feet long right now, and as long as the diluted chlorine wasn’t too strong, before the roots got emersed, they should continue growing

Right or wrong, this is what I’m doing… a sort of soft sanitize

So, even though I got a fantastic deal on a new 55 gallon, I just didn’t relish wrestling an old 1/2 inch plate 55 gallon out of my basement, by myself.. so, since this was never confirmed as TB, and had lots of things wrong, it was my 1st restart, almost 2 years ago, I’m trying something… so...

    Plants are like natural carbon???

I should probably retitle… more like bucketless water changes… I’m probably adding 3 times the water, that I would with evaporation, and buck water changing alone… of course that will reduce tannins

    Plants are like natural carbon???

But aggressive growing plants do draw a lot of water the tank that has a giant pothos vine growing out of it uses close to 10 gallons a week, more than similar tanks, with slower growing plants… in reality, they just make for bigger water changes, as the water they draw, is not returned to the...

    Water Paramaters are Terrible

Have you tested your tap water??? And how did you cycle the new tank??? And did you move your filters over from the other tank???

    Plants are like natural carbon???

So I’ve quit using carbon in my tanks, since I started growing so many terrestrial plants out of my tanks… they pull a lot of water, and seem to remove a lot of the same things carbon does… One thing I’ve noticed lately, is they seem to remove some of the coloration on my water, that has a lot...

    Apisto’s meeting the neighbors

Yep… pretty sure I’ve got a 3 some going on… the male freely goes back and forth from the females on each side… and the females are more tolerant of each other… free love is great, until someone gets knocked up, and you’re forced to set up a home… Freeze dried tubeflex worms seem to tame the...

Is a heater always necessary for tropical fish?

My Tilapia like high 80's in their grow out tanks ( outside ) the cubic shape of my tanks help maintain temperatures, during the hottest months of summer, & during the large temp swings of autumn... just before harvest time, we can have lows in the lower 40's ( even upper 30's ) , & highs in the...

Am I disturbing my king tigers???

I'm really a bad "fish poppa" as this became an African Bio, & I couldn't catch these plecos out, without a complete disassembly of the scape, this is my hardest tank to work on, as it's viewed from 3 sides, & built in, so I only have above a narrow side to work on the tank, that and this is a 2...
