Breeding A Pair Of Cherry Barbs

Barbs are externally fertilised egg laying fish, as such, they never become pregnant. When full of eggs, females are noticeably deeper in the body and wider when viewed from above or the front. If there is a male in the tank, she will never really fill as he will drive her and the pair will...

    Fish-safe?

Bricks, almost certainly okay. There are some specialist bricks, but I doubt you mean these. Concrete, even old concrete is likely to be alkali. It will likey raise hardness and pH, depends what you are keeping. There are other issues with concrete - best avoid. Twigs, Oak, Beech, most hardwoods...

    Rosy Barbs...advice From Keepers

Male Cherry Barbs are, with the usual quality rider, much more red then females, bright red in fact. Females are larger, and are a light reddish brown with mor visible markings then the males, i.e. lateral dark stripes. The quality issue in this case is as with most easy to breed fish, the...

    Installation Of Fan

$19.99! Seems very expensive for a few very cheap components available anywhere. Doesn't even include finger guards. As for installing it, I would cut holes in the hood in a suitablew position and bolt the fans in, (which aren't included either). Arrange it so the airflow is through the hood...

    Rosy Barbs...advice From Keepers

Rosy Barbs aren't overly aggressive, but they are boistrous and good quality fish will grow to 75+mm, which when considering the group size, (say 6 fish), is a lot of stock. That said, as they are so easy to breed, there are a lot of poor quality fish around that are very inbred and stay...

    Perishing Suction Cups

Tis true, you tend to get what you pay for. Firms like Eheim use better materials, so they work better and last longer. The "heat stressing" mentioned above will work for some plastics for some time, eventually, PVC "rubber" cups will fail. Google for a local supplier of silicone components if...

    Water Changes In Large Tanks?

Do you not find that the copper acquires a pretty thick coating of "fur", (aragonite), after a short while? ??? Most YoYo's look like that, there are some variations in the markings, but what you describe doesn't sound like B. almorhae at all. The common name "YoYo" comes from being able to see the word "YoYo" written on the side of the fish, (use some imagination!).

Co2 Yeast Went In To My Aquarium

I use a "knock out pot" on yeast CO2 systems. Basically, I have an empty bottle beside the reaction bottle and run the CO2 line from the reactor to the empty bottle. Then I run a second line from the empty bottle to the CO2 delivery. If the reaction gets a little to keen, the gunk drops into the...

Cherry Barbs are one of the few non-schooling barbs. 2 males together in a small tank may fight. These are best kept as a pair or trio, with 1m 2f.

    Serpae Tetras..

Serpæ, like the other blood tetras are notoriously nippy, and being front toothed, can do a lot of damage with a small nip. I would not advise keeping them with any slow moving long finner fish. Rather, a large group to try to limit aggresion, in a tank of fish well able to look after themselves.

    Rock Question

If they have been out in a woodland area, probably just a good scrub would suffice. If they are near any agricultural land or other places where they may have come into contact with sprays/pesticides/fertilisers etc., a few good scrubs and soaks in changes of water.

    Rock Question

Most rocks and stones are safe to use in tanks. There are a few exceptions however, and it depends what you intend to keep. Generally limestones, dolomites and similar rocks should not be used unless you intend to keep marines or a rift valley tank - they leach minerals, (mostly Calcium and...

    Barbs Or Tetras

There are no South American Cyprinids at all. There are many tetras that are to big to be eaten by a Pictus, I know nothing about BGK's though. If Silver Dollars can survive in CFC's tank of monsters, I suspect they would with a BGK for example.

    Overfiltering - Is It Possible?

Question About The Blind Cave Tetra

I would say they are as aggressive as Tiger Barbs, and being front toothed, able to do more damage per bite then a TB. I would not keep them with anything not able to look after itself, TB's would probably be okay.

Question About The Blind Cave Tetra

Yes, they are a naturally schooling/shoaling fish and best kept in groups. They are, however, quite big fish, and tend to get increasingly bad tempered with size and should be best classified as at least semi-aggressive. So a group of 100mm+ fast, active, semi-aggressive fish - their tank should...

"Organic" produce is fertilised with pig and chicken "manure". I think you'll find that such material is full of bacteria, protozoans and fungii. Cae Salt Tolerance?

To any true freshwater fish, salt is a pollutant. Some may tolerate it better then others, but whatever, the fishes system is having to work harder in order to keep it's electrolyte levels normal, this puts great strain on the kidney in particular leading to it's early failure and death of the fish.
