Large Aquarium Design. Help Tips Etc Req.

Design seems to be changing rapidly. Thing that struck me with some of them is the sheer weight, and that on a wooden floor? External filters do not use much power, they only need pump a very small head, not like open sump type pumps. Lighting those deeper designs is going to be very difficult...

    Tropical And Goldfish!?

Goldfish are cold water fish. Although they generally survive at tropical temperatures, the warmer water holds less dissolved Oxygen, so they always have some residual stress. The size incompatibility has already been mentioned. They are also big waste producers, Neons, on the other hand, are...

    Silver Sharks

A totally peaceful fish that is 450mm long will regard a "thing" that is 20mm long as simply a food item. There is no aggressive intent, it is simply a very big fish eating small live food. As such, a totally peacefull 450mm Bala will snack on Zebras or Harlequins.

How Do I Sterilize An Old Piece Of Bogwood?

If he wants it back, well I'd give it back. I have all manner of old wood from various sources given to me , always given it a good scrub and hose and left it to soak in a rain barrel for a few months, scrub and hose, into the tank. Never had any issues.

Tetra : High Fin Neon Tetra

Many tetras are semi-aggressive, and those that aren't usually will stand up for themselves in a scrap. Being front toothed, a bite from a tetra can do a lot more damage then from tooth less or back toothed fish.

    Salinity Of Loaches

Loaches are freshwater fish. Salt is a pollutant in freshwater. Some fish tolerate it better then others, but it interferes with the fishes osmoregulation system and particularly the kidney has to work harder, it burns out earlier then normal killing the fish prematurely. Loaches tolerate salt...

    Dead Tetra

Blackwater species are very sensitive to Nitrogen pollution. It is why you often see advice along the lines of "don't add Neons to a tank until it has be estblished for 3 months" or similar. Newly established tanks can often throw small nitrite and ammonia spikes which are tolerated very badly...

    Puntius Rhomboocellatus - Rhomb Barb

The "species" credentials of B. rhombocellatus are somewhat open. I had always known it as one of the "4 - 5" sub species of B. pentazona, (B.p. pentazona, B. p. hexazona, B. p. partipentazona and B. p. rhomoceallatus, possibly B. p. foerschi as well). I have seen other classifications. In all...

    Placement Of External Filters?

I'm not sure I'm reading that right, but if I am, then I disagree. The delivery height is the height between the water level and the outlet, (spray bar or whatever). With the rider on resistance to flow by the walls of the pipes, which is considerable, but let's ignore it for now, a filter...

    Tiger Barbs And Green Morphing?

As the others have said, in a group of barbs, most species anyway, their is a heirarchy which needs to be created and defended. It is common for small squabbles to break out. These rarely last long or cause any damage, in a large enough group. The group size is important because in a large...

    Placement Of External Filters?

Noop is right, the inlet pipe is working as a siphon pulling water out of the tank and forcing it into the bottom of the canister. In most canisters, once you have that siphon running, the canister and outlet pipe will fill with water by themselves until the level in the return pipe reaches the...

You are incorrect. I think you need to do some basic research on phase change. When liquids "evaporate", i.e. change to a gas, they absorb energy from their surroundings to do so - in the majority of cases, (there are some strange effects at extreme cryogenic temperatures), that energy comes...

Is This Ok Or Just Wishfull Thinking

The only barbs I would put in a tank that size is a pair of Cherry Barbs. These stay relatively small and are not sociable fish. Danios tend to want a lot of swimming space, so if the tank is long and shallow, maybe, but if it is a regular shape, not a good idea. Betta of course.
