A totally peaceful fish that is 450mm long will regard a "thing" that is 20mm long as simply a food item. There is no aggressive intent, it is simply a very big fish eating small live food. As such, a totally peacefull 450mm Bala will snack on Zebras or Harlequins.

If he wants it back, well I'd give it back. I have all manner of old wood from various sources given to me , always given it a good scrub and hose and left it to soak in a rain barrel for a few months, scrub and hose, into the tank. Never had any issues.

The only barbs I would put in a tank that size is a pair of Cherry Barbs. These stay relatively small and are not sociable fish. Danios tend to want a lot of swimming space, so if the tank is long and shallow, maybe, but if it is a regular shape, not a good idea. Betta of course.
