    Angelfish Tank mates

Other folk have said this earlier, but I will say it again anyway. Serpae can be problematic. They are notorious fin nippers. In an appropriate tank they are great, good colour, (if you can get decent stock - there are a lot of poor quality fish around), active etc. but I would not keep them again.

    What are you doing today?

We have many plants in pots, (etc. some of them are quite large), they have to be portable though. In the late spring to early autumn, ie. when the risk of frost is past, we move them outside. Conversly, they come back in as frost risk starts to appear. Today was the day this year and we have...

I've clipped two thirds of our hedges today. I can't finish the third third until I can borrow the ladder from the estate office. Nice weather today, dry. Rain forecast for tomorrow though.

What are the chances of egg scatterers crossing, when there are several varieties in a tank???

The only Atherin, (rainbow fish), I had in my big tank was Iriatherina werneri. They were breeding ALL THE TIME!!! But, alone, there was no possibility of hybridsation. Interesting species and group of fish generally.

I used Gamma irradiated frozen foods frequently. The radiation kills off anything that might become a problem. A quick search shows they are still very much available, here. for example Good stuff.

If someone says "a 48x15x12 tank" that is something I can picture, (okay - cheating, I had these in my house in England...), but there is a tendency to say "a 140 litre tank", which is more or less the capacity of a 48x15x12. The volume size alone, though, really is useless. What is the surface...

    Gold barbs

The gold barb is a sport of the green, (now Barbodes semifasciolatus). When I started, (1960's), the green was a regular, but they drifted out of fashion compared to the gold, ("Schuberti"), which largely replaced them. A good quality green is a great looking fish. Another fish, Pethia gelius...

    Gravel or sand

My last two strip down and rebuild from scratch projects had me change from gravel to swimming pool filter sand. It is, perhaps, a little coarser than building sand for example, but a lot finer than the gravel I had been using for decades. It was cheap, and I had a pool specialist company just a...

As requested, a comment. Many of the common species in the trade have never been in their native waters, but have been produced in breeding stations perhaps on a different continent.

What substrate is best for a planted tank?

The last two tanks I set up before I left England used swimming pool filter sand. Slightly coarser than builders sand or beach sand, and more rounded edges to the grains, so good for diggers. The plants seemed to like it.

    Dragon Stone disintegration... what the??

    >>> metemorfic, granite, or basaltic. Metamorphic rocks, as the name suggests, are rocks that have been changed, usually by heat, (pressure alone can metamorphose rocks, but it is a lot less common). from a base rock type. Typically, the original structure of the rock is destroyed and minerals...

Conserving Denison's barb and few other endangered fish

Space is usually the issue. The basics, keeping males and females separately, and a tank in which to do the spawning already requires three. The fry are invariably very small but grow, they soon require extra tanks. Then you have some fish of a desirable species, at a reasonable size, that you...

Good video that. When I was in the Congo, (called Zaire at the time), there were no bad shippers simply because there were no shippers. The country was a mess, a wreck. Was mid '90's. It still has some catching up too do.

Can a tetra get bound up from eating too many frozen brine shrimp???

I always put frozen food in an egg cup, (any convenient suitably sized container to hand), filled with tank water to melt. I can imagine a situation where a fish swallows frozen food which then damages the throat/intestine of the animal by frost bite or similar. It is not a natural thing for a...

What genre of music are you into?

It is a mood thing for me. Normally, I'm calm and relaxed and have Pink Floyd, Yes, Curved Air, bands like that on. Play-Sand As Substrate, Safe Or Not?

I used to use swimming pool filter sand. It is coarser than some other types, and less likely to pack down. Do you bury your fish when they pass away?

It has been said several times in the thread, but flushing has a small risk of introducing disease or parasites into a local water system, to populations of local fish with little or no immunity. Hole in the garden, best idea.
