    My First Tangs Are Home!

I'll keep trying for the adults but I'm hardly seeing them at the moment. One was out earlier but the tank lights were off so I culdn't get a photo. Thanks for the input!

    My First Tangs Are Home!

Well, I've managed a couple of shots of the young Julies as the older ones are still in hiding. Any thoughts as to whether they are transcriptus or not? I love them anyway, I'm surprised they have the blue fins already!

    My First Tangs Are Home!

Good point! I've not got any pics yet as they are all in hiding at the moment but hopefully they'll be more confident soon so I'll get some photos when I can. Then you can al tell me which julies I actually have!

    My First Tangs Are Home!

I stripped and rescaped my 240l tank at the weekend and took some fish to the lfs. I popped in to pick up the bucket today and I had a look around as you do. The calvus I had my eye on were still there but there were also a load of different Julidochromis sp which had been brought in by someone...

Planning My New Stock - Tanganyikan!

Thanks for the replies, my internet went down last night so sorry I couldn't reply! I'm still unsure about the xenos as they aren't really seen as a beginner Tang afaik. The rainbows are there because I couldn't bear to part with them and they'd be fine in the tank so I'm not worried about...

Planning My New Stock - Tanganyikan!

Hi, I am finally swapping my general community to a Tang community and would appreciate some assistance with choosing my stock. I have been advised that the rainbowfish I have will be fine with a peaceful (ish) tang community so long as they are the only occupants of the open water, so no cyps...

Multi Fry, How Big When Selling And What Price?

I can come down on the 14th or 15th or the following 2 weekends if any of those are ok with you?

Multi Fry, How Big When Selling And What Price?

Yeah, I'm still wanting to change the 240l. It's been a question of finances of late and was also toying temporarily with mbuna but have switched back to Tangs again! I've just got to bite the bullet and sell the fish... I've got a 60l which can house them temporarily if needs be.

Multi Fry, How Big When Selling And What Price?

I'll have some off you Lisa! I can vouch for the health of your fish, the Celebes Rainbows I had from you are still spawning though I've stopped picking the eggs now.

    So Many Fish!

I'd put them in with the fry. If they're holding they won't eat the existing fry and if they're being hassled they won't spit in the main tank (from what I've read). I don't keep cichlids (yet, though I'm planning on it soon) so you may want to also ask this in the African cichlid section.

    Almost Tang Stocking List?

Oh, and with a pH of 7.5-8.0, 10dGH & 15dKH already I'm not planning on doing anything extra to raise the pH. I have read that this will be fine so long as the fish are tank bred not wild caught. As this is the case, do you reckon it'd be possible to keep the Angel too, as he has been in this...

    Almost Tang Stocking List?

Hi, I have decided to go (sometime in the next several months!) for a bit of a change heading towards a Tanganyikan tank for my 240l. However, my rainbows will be staying as they like similar chemistry (and I like them!) which obviously means the mid/open water swimmers are covered. So far I...

Such A Thing As To Deep?

I have heard that if the tank is too large they just can't patrol their 'territory' sufficiently leading them to become stressed. However, that is just something I've heard and can't say how true it is...

Hornwort Plastic Plants = Bad For Betta Fish?

I've only just got my first Betta but one of the things I was aware of is that plastic plants are notorious for ripping their fins. If I were you I'd remove the plastic plants and replace them with either silk or real plants.

My Community Is Not Floating My Boat Any More...

Hmm, I don't really want a war zone especially with this being my first real foray into cichlids (unless you count 1 angelfish!) but I had really taken a shine to them... I was also looking at similis and ornatipinnis. I just casually mentioned changing the 240l set up to my husband and he can't...

My Community Is Not Floating My Boat Any More...

Funny you should say that but after reading a few threads here I have been reserching shell-dwellers (particularly Lamprologus ocellatus and meleagris)... I have also seen rainbows in Tanganyikan tanks due to the similar water requirements (hard and alkaline). I have a spare 60l that I'd been...

My Community Is Not Floating My Boat Any More...

Well, as the title says really! My 240l planted community is really not doing it for me an more. It's been set up as it is now for about 3 years although the stock has changed over that time the tank is pretty much the same. It currently houses: 1 very large Angel, 5 Lake Tebera Rainbows (well...

    Am I Really Being Cruel?!

I agree with everything you are saying (when I posted this question I hadn't received the reply about 'it can be done') and I had also just read several threads where people had been rude and suggested cruelty which made me rather worried about what further replies were going to say and wanted...

    African Dwarf Frogs

You'd be better off defrosting the bloodworm in a bit of tank water first, then suck it up in a turkey baster/large pipette and squirt it directly onto the floor of the tank. I also feed Tetra Reptomin which my Betta ignores (this needs to be soaked then the air squeezed out of it before feeding...

    Am I Really Being Cruel?!

Thanks for all the support, he is vry active but still doesn't make full use of the tank, so far preferring to patrol the front third where it is not planted. I did think hard before putting any other fish in there, it was originally just the 3 frogs but unfortunately the eldest died a week or...

    Am I Really Being Cruel?!

    Am I Really Being Cruel?!

Hi, my Betta is in a 28l cube with my 2 ADF. It is obviously heated and filtered. I am being somewhat criticised on another forum as "28l (25l with displacement) is too small for anything but shrimp". This has made me doubt myself and I'm feeling a little upset that I may be being...

    Shrimp Safe Fluke Treatment

I ended up treating with Sterazin after emoving as many shrimp as I could. However, as you say, the few I couldn't get weren't affected by the treatment even though it says not to use it when crustaceans (among other things) are present.

    Everything Is Breeding!

I can heartily recommend ZM foods (they do fry and adult foods). I use the infusoria grade for my Celebes when they are tiny and work up to the larger sizes plus new hatched brine shrimp. I believe they ship international if you aren't in the UK.

Waters Gone Very Cloudy Like Milk

I accidentally dosed under 1ml too much finrot meds to my 240l tank once and this small amount was enough to knock the filter bacteria out. Not very long ago I had to dose again and after last time I measured each ml out in a 1ml pipette. A day or two after dosing I also experienced a mild...

Finally Sucked In By A Betta!

He sounds like a real character! Mine is not bothered about the shrimp either though I was a bit worried at first. He's not realy eaten anything with any gusto except bloodworm until tonight when I tried him with some large (400 micron) fry food from ZM foods. He definitely enjoyed that! When...

    Bettas And Brine Shrimp Nauplii

You were right, he rolled it around his mouth a bit and spat it out! My Rainbows went mad for it though. Whilst feeding the threadfins I thought i'd try him on some of their food, ZM 400 microns fry food (very good stuff) and he loved it so at least I know he's getting good nutrition if he eats...

    What Would You Do?

It may be the same in theory but in practice it's a hell of a job! It's been hard enough for me to sort the flow on a 240l but the 120l is a breeze. Anyway it's a moot point as you're staying with Malawis :) . If only I had the spare cash I'd have had that tank off your hands tomorrow, those...

    What Would You Do?

As much as I love planted (you may guess from my sig!) I simply can't imagine how you'd manage it in a 6 footer, especially hi-tech. Just getting the flow right would be a total headache with dead spots everywhere, not to mention the pruning and the amount of CO2 and ferts you'd get through! I...

What Can I Keep In A 20Litre Tank

Thanks for adding that Jenste, I was just lazy and pointed the op to the amphibian section! I know Congo frog isn't a real name but a lot of Maidenhead Aquatics sell them as this so I popped it in.

Finally Sucked In By A Betta!

I may have been lured by one Betta but it'll just be the one, I can't find an excuse for 5 tanks! What To Add To Current Stocking

I often go on a bit, it's easy to do! Angels would look nice in there, particularly the wild type IMO. They should be fine with Congo Tetra (they've got some gorgeous huge males in my lfs at the mo) in fact I looked very hard at them a while ago when looking for tankmates for my huge Angel. I...

    How's My Tannk Look?

Beautiful tank! Definitely add a black background, especially with the Rainbows, you'll find they colour up better and show better colour when displaying with a dark background and it'll go really well with the stand. Some floating plants wouldn't hurt either to add to the security of the fish...
