What's the difference between Pink and Pink Flamingo Guppies?

It;s very interesting, guppy genetics are not something I've looked into before but I spent ages trying to get my head around it on your site. It's a very useful site!

🐠 TOTM myrtle - September Tank of the Month Winner (16 gal & smaller)

Thank you everyone, it's definitely been a learning curve for me and it's constantly evolving. Trying to fit the principles of a Dutch scape into a 30x20cm tank has been challenging to say the least!

    Shrimps are SFW why?

I had a group of neos that took months to breed and that was without tank moves. 10 months it took them to finally decide to do it!

Anybody know where to get Pygmy Sunfish UK?

The fish Barn had them in recently, might be worth asking if they can get them again...

Appreciate any help. What is this?

The majority of leech species don't suck blood; they feed on molluscs, insect larvae, and worms. Some even feed on algae and detritus :)

    Paradise fish - reduce aggression

My pair of M. spechti have their own 60l tank. They're meant to be slightly milder mannered than M. opercularis, but there's still some harrassment of the female if she goes near the (poorly built attempt at a) nest.

    Austrolebius nigripinnis

Perhaps I'll stick with the medaka in there then! Or plant spawners... I'll have to make their tank look half reasonable though, so some scaping will be happening!

    Austrolebius nigripinnis

Thanks, I suspected that might be the case with in situ! Love your description of the tank, do they tend to tear up plants or something or ref to the plastic container!? I won't worry too much about coir/peat in the tank, as you can see - it's quite mulmy! It only has shrimp in at the moment...

    Austrolebius nigripinnis

Hi, I've just won a pair (plus a spare male who will be separated) of these beautiful fish at auction so whilst I await their delivery I thought I'd pick brains on breeding as I've never done peat divers. Either the pair or the single male will be going into my paludarium (probably the single...

Ricefish owners, why did you get Ricefish?

I also keep O. woworae in a biotope setup and they are interesting as well as pretty. The medaka aren't marketed very heavily in the UK, despite the energy price rises, but that may be more to do with DeFRA not wanting to risk them becoming invasive...

Ricefish owners, why did you get Ricefish?

I'll answer this; part of the attraction for O. latipes is that they are one of the only peaceful tiny fish that can be kept at low temperatures, lower than WCMM. They're easy to breed and fun to raise from eggs which is much cheaper than buying the adult fish. The eggs can be bought for £1 each...

    When to euthanise?

Personally, I'd suggest looking on some of the groups on Band as a lot of these fish are home bred and not farmed. There's also the option of Franks Bettas which are line bred from wild caught parents.

    Macropodus spechti

Thanks, they're currently at 21C so I'll leave them there, the room will be warmer in summer so 21 will be their winter low. I have several tanks with no fish where she can stay for a few days if they spawn, that's no issue, though one is currently a grow out for imbellis.

    Macropodus spechti

Hi, Just wondering if anyone here has kept these? I'm finding conflicting info online regarding temperatures, with some saying no lower than 20C and others saying they need seasonal fluctuations and down to 12 for a winter hibernation period. I'm loathe to keep them in permanent breeding...

Tips for making my tank look neater?

You don't have to drill and sump a tank for an aquascape - there are external canister filters for that if you want to have inline heaters etc. OPlus, this tank is for a Betta, suggesting it can spend it's life hiding from the flow under a rock is, to be blunt, ludicrous. Not all aquascapes are...

    Betta breeding system.

If you don't have much space, you may struggle with the breeding side, especially for domestic Bettas. The males will need to be separated sooner than you think and then you'll have to grow them on in individual tanks. Personally, I'd not consider 1l containers ethical and wouldn't buy from...

    Wanted - Betta imbellis females

Hi, as the title says, I'm searching for female imbellis after my trio of MFF turned out to be 3 males  Happy to wait for warmer weather for shipping or can collect if a reasonably short distance from Basingstoke. Cheers.

    Achieving Water Clarity

Most of the time it's what you can't see that's problematic anyway. After all, acid rain creates beautifully clear, yet totally dead, bodies of water. Clarity doesn't equal health.

    Achieving Water Clarity

T This is very true for fish/fauna only tanks or those with fake plants/decor, but for a heavily planted tank (by heavily planted, I mean almost zero visible substrate such as the image below) with a low bioload, mechanical filtration and water changes only are sufficient as much of the...

    My plants are getting worse

It's as much to do with the magnification of the light through the water droplets on the leaves burning them. The resulting damage can cause the leaf to die off. Most floating plants live on still water bodies and don't get splashed frequently. Add to that the temperature of the condensed water...

    Achieving Water Clarity

All sponges are mechanical filtration! Just because the particle size they filter out is larger than that filtered out by filter floss doesn't stop it being mechanical filtration. Particulate is trapped mechanically within the sponge, hence mechanical filtration. Of course, if the foam you use...

    Achieving Water Clarity

Sponges are mechanical filtration though (as well as containing nitrifying bacteria)? If you had a canister full of ceramic rings you could claim you have no mechanical filtration, but a canister full of sponge, whilst pretty much what I do, is not a system with no mechanical filtration.

    Wild betta biotope ideas

To be fair, there is also humidity coming from the back wall as it is a drip wall and part of the filter for the tank. The phaeleonopsis also doesn't live in there permanently as it is too wet for it's roots :) the min temp is 18C . I'm still playing with planting for this as the humidity and...

It's not Canada cold, this is the UK after all! Its warming up again next week so hoping that a heat pack and insulation will suffice. They stand more chance than live fish though. I figured the seller wouldn't ship if they'd arrive DOA due to temperature. Delivery is due Thursday but lesson...

    New to killies

Following advice, I've opted for F. nigerianus Steel Blue, which I believe is an aquarium bred colour form. Due to the sudden drop in temperature here, combined with the postal strikes, I've opted for eggs as I didn't want to risk adult fish. I'm currently raising some Betta imbellis fry so have...

    My plants are getting worse

As @Byron says, the benefits out weigh the drawbacks with covers, just remove any leaves that get damaged by the drips as opposed to removing the cover. I mentioned it so you don't panic about nutrients etc when you see that damage as it's inevitable for floaters.

    My plants are getting worse

Your light is on for 12 hors but only the frogbit is benefitting as it's shading everything else out a bit :) . Ideally you don't want more than 2/3 of the surface covered as it reduces light and inhibits gas exchange. Do you have a glass cover as a lot of that looks like damage from...
