Great news for the River Thames!

It’s is fairly encouraging to hear that some aquatic species as well as certain bird species are making a bit of a comeback since the Thames was declared biologically dead years ago. However this must be treated with caution due to the ever changing climate due to many factors, not least due to...

    Stringy algae ?

Hair algae is fairly common in new tank set up, especially on wood. Am going through similar issue with my new tank as well, just basically have to keep brushing off the algae with a toothbrush or similar and syphoning all the algae to keep on top of it until tank and plants become more...

    Is this too small

Found it, I knew I had it bookmarked somewhere  This is a fairly good read and a good start for your research into hillstreams - https://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/features/how-to-keep-hillstream-and-brook-loaches-in-the-aquarium/

    Is this too small

I think that tank is a bit too small to be honest. Reckon a absolute minimum of 3 foot (90cm) long tank would be ok with high oxygenated fast flowing water. But think a 4 or even 5 foot long tank would be much better, gives you more options imho. I am a big fan of hillstreams and considered...

How to transport a lot of fish?

Indeed, I have always used and seen those long and narrow types of bags being used for the transportation of fish and shrimps. Yep, agreed that fill up with one third water and fill the rest with air either compressed oxygen from an air pump (bit slow but it does work) or breathe into bag...

Newly cycled tank - floating white particles?

Does seem a little bit unsual to have these particles coming out into the water column after several weeks going though the fishless cycling. The addition of the plants and IAL may be somehting that you disturbed in the substrate perhaps, unlikely though to be honest. Also I have hard water as...

    Ch4rlie's New Tank!

While I was waiting for the tank going through the fishless cycle I thought I would do something that would make my life that little bit easier for those weekly water changes. Rather than running a long 10m python hose system going from tank to kitchen sink but having to use a universal pump to...

    Ch4rlie's New Tank!

Thank you, kind of you to say so and I know its not the best aquascape and certainly won't win any prizes for this but am hoping the plants will eventually grow out and fill in the back of the tank and the anubias and taxiphyllum will grow and spread on top of the wood decor so it will look nice...

    Ch4rlie's New Tank!

Tank is going through a bit of an 'ugly stage' when a bit of hair algae is growing on plants, wood and tiny bit of BGA on sand but its not too bad actually and is mostly gone after cleaning these off, was expecting this anyhow so have dealt with it for now and hope the plants will start to...

If there was one piece of (silly or funny) advice you would give a new fishkeeper....

Aha, is that what piscivorous mean? Sure do learn something new every day. Is that a sort of carnivorus fish that predates on other fish or simply fish eating other fish tankmate like you get in tanks sometimes when a fish has passed away?

If there was one piece of (silly or funny) advice you would give a new fishkeeper....

Sorry, what is that? Piscivorous species? Feel like its something I should know but honestly not got a clue.....

    Big tank filters

You can have whichever filters you like but not always with the flow you’d like. I have a Oase 350 and it’s actually a pretty good filter but the flow output is not the greatest but not bad to be honest. You can always add a powerhead or two to boost the flow around the tank to eliminate dead...

    The Tea Lovers Thread

I used to love tea with one sugar but since being diagnosed diabetic type 2 have had to stop having sugar in my cuppa tea. Don’t miss chocolate and white bread that much, but the sugar in my tea, yep I sure do miss that! Oh, to answer your question, not a big fan of earl grey tbh, Rooibos is...

    API STRESSCOAT

I have come across several forums that alludes Aloe Vera can clog the gills of fish and damage them sadly and also Aloe Vera can reduce the oxygen level in water column in closed aquariums but not scientifically proven unfortunately , i have come across several science papers stating aloe vera...

    API STRESSCOAT

API API Stress coat is a kind of water conditioner that is supposed to help with stress and slime coat of fish etc and the product actually includes Aloe Vera which API says heals damaged tissues and wounds but is not scientifically proven, there is a bell ringing in my mind somewhere where...

    API STRESSCOAT

I have never used this API stresscoat, though I have seen certain chain store LFS using them to add to water in fish bag before adding fish in for transportation but honestly I had to stop myself going up to the employee and saying something but realise would be pointless as staff are probably...

One of my weirder maintenance moments

Not like you to be a man of a few words! But yes indeed it’s interesting how things can end up and survive in filters, I’ve had snails, even red cherry shrimps quite happily munching away inside both one of my HoB as well as one of my external filter as well before, even had an endler...

    I Did Everything Wrong

Have never seen “eggs” like those before to be honest with you. I know very, very little about crawdads and sorry am not much help. But hope someone may know what these are in your picture. Kinda fascinating though and I’d like to know more what it is if you find out.

One fish you really want but you dont have.

Really want Habrosus or salt & pepper cories but not able to as my water is too hard for those guys! Red lines or denisons are another I’d like one day too. As for sw, I’d like simple clownfish and a blenny as well. Maybe one day…….

    Snail identification...

Hard to tell from that photo to be honest. Can you take a few more pics, particularly from the side if possible. Most common snails that hitchhike to tanks tend to be pond or bladder snails, sometime ramshorn either red or blue varieties. I’ve had Malaysian trumpet snail coming into my tank...

    Ch4rlie's New Tank!

Had these wood for several years in the spares cabinet never been used. Hence why I soaked them for a couple of weeks first to be sure they are waterlogged and did not even have to add weights on top to weigh them down in the water, they were heavy enough to sink by themselves, bonus!

    Ch4rlie's New Tank!

I know what you mean about takashi tanks, looks stunning but a lot of them are sort of samey with these grey rocks and carpeting plants. Funnily enough, I was actually thinking of christmas moss as well, might go for that if can come across some somewhere if nothing else catches my eye first...

    Hello! And pleco help?

These silver sharks, really more commonly known as Bala sharks, they do grow fairly quick but are prone to being stunted if in tanks too small for them which will reduce their lifespan to be honest. I don't know how long it actually takes for them to fully grow but would guess no more than 4 -...

What fish to stock in a 40 gallon with rainbow shark?

Yes, thats the SF site for rainbow shark, same species thats being talked about on this thread i believe. Says needs a 120x45cm tank, those dimensions means this makes it a 60 gal US tank roughly. :/

    Stuck on cycling

This made me chuckle, I used to live in Scotland and know what the weather is like, nice and rainy! Had to do a double take as thought for a second you were serious!

    Hello! And pleco help?

Think thats a silver shark, grows pretty big to be honest, 30 - 35 cm, definitely not a small fish. Reckon a 7 foot tank would be suitable for some of those fully grown! (850 litres / 225 gals US)

What fish to stock in a 40 gallon with rainbow shark?

Got to be careful stocking a tank with a Rainbow Shark, honestly I would not put in small fish like lambchop rasboras or anything similar in size as they would be stressed the entire time they can see the rainbow shark. Definitely would not put in any plecos or catfish as the rainbow may bully...

    Ch4rlie's New Tank!

Thank you for that, nice. The wood looks a bit bare and small for the tank but it bends in the same shape as the bow fronted glass so it works, photographs are hard to do this justice to be fair but honestly am no aquascaper (obviously!) and not a photographer either! Thinking I may add...

    Ch4rlie's New Tank!

Time for the next little update methinks - Finally added the wood, its actually 3 pieces of wood attached together using cable / zip ties and one stainless steel screw to make it look more like one long piece of wood. Added a variety of my favourite plants, anubias, marimo moss ball, crinum...
