    Worst Advice ever.... go!

Gosh - one time (I have to be what, 15, 16 yrs old) I was at our LFS on my own, perusing the store and I overheard the LFS employee give some of the absolute worst advice. Someone was buying a fish tank that day - and the person was going on about how they can mix & match pretty much any type of...

Apistogramma Cacatouides "Orange Flash" Breeding Journal

Tolak is doing good - not to display all of his private info, but there was a divorce and his best friend passed away and his dad passed away over a span of about 3 years. He stopped keeping fish after that - but I’ve offered to give him some of this Apistogramma’s in the future if he wants to...

Apistogramma Cacatouides "Orange Flash" Breeding Journal

Quick update: I spoke to a good friend of mine (former Moderator on this Forum, Tolak) who used to breed high quality angelfish commercially and apistos on the side. He recommended that I increase the temp from 84 F to 88F --> and increase the feedings (and thereby, water changes) for rapid...

Help with 6 week old fry

I am at a loss. If your water tests are truly 0,0 and 0 ---> then that should not be the problem. Temp does not seem to be the problem to me; but I've never bred bettas. I have no clue what could have caused this beyond a water quality issue and/or contaminated food (unlikely).

    Trustworthy Online Fish Stores

If you check the reviews, I have found Aquabid to be a great place to find fish. What type of fish are you looking for? I'll be ready to ship Dwarf Cockatoo Apistogramma's ("Orange Flash") in the next month or so and I am in Illinois.

Any update on the Kribs? Would love to see more pictures! As you can tell by my username, they are one of my favorites!

Added female bitaniata and a rock cave to my 20 long.

@Byron that's awesome information! I had no clue that apistos, being so similar to one another (in some cases) could develop such unique differences.

Added female bitaniata and a rock cave to my 20 long.

Gorgeous! I'm not super familiar with bitaniata but I believe most apistos are cave spawners - so you'll probably find that they don't use the breeding rock you put in. Apisto's are usually fairly shy and like to use "apisto caves" (basically caves with small openings) because it's the most...

    Flowerhorn bruise spreading fast

It needs to be said: If the Flowerhorn is so weak that it cannot fend of a common pleco from eating at it, it's in very poor health. While I hope you can start taking positive steps to adequately care for these fish, I am not hopeful that this flowerhorn will survive if you don't make those...

    Flowerhorn bruise spreading fast

I agree with the others. I want to be clear: People are not trying to ruffle your feathers to be a "jerk". Keeping fish is more than having something pretty to look at - it's about the care and wellbeing of the fish. A Flowerhorn should never (unless very small) be in a tank that small. That's...

Recent Acquisitions From Discus.com (WARNING: Picture Heavy)

This is very common for discus owners. Discus are notoriously sensitive to anything but exactly perfect water conditions - no substrate allows you to easily find rotting food from feedings and siphon it out.

Swordtail problems, need urgent help (edited)

Unfortunately with the pixelation, I can't make out what that is. It sort of looks like a fungus to me, but I am not sure. I would again recommend the 50% water changes and see if that helps.

    Kribensis Size

I disagree. Kribensis are typically only territorial when breeding and in such a large tank, two pairs of Kribensis are more than okay to set up their own domains. As I mentioned in post #6 and #10; as soon as pairs have formed the remaining male will be bullied and eventually killed unless the...

Help with 6 week old fry

Hello, I think we need some info at @Metalman said. What type of fish are they? What size tank - and what decorations do you have? What are your water parameters? (Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, pH) A picture would definitely be helpful.

    Blackwater questions

So I've done a decent amount of research on blackwater aquariums, as I breed Apistogramma Cacatouides which are historically a somewhat sensitive fish and come from a blackwater environment. Here are some of the pros: 1. Natural looking (in my mind, always a benefit) 2. Research indicates that...

    Fish shortage?

I just had Petco special order some fish for me (Illinois) and they seem to have no issue getting a supply. They carry some slightly harder to find fish in our area like Discus, Panda Angelfish and multiple types of shrimp.

    HELP! Water is a mess.

I would concur with others - Ammonia that high would be WAAYYY over the US levels for safe drinking water. If you can tell us what city you are in, maybe one of us can try to find a recent water report and see if there is more data.

Swordtail problems, need urgent help (edited)

To be honest, the pictures to me don't show much. I can't even begin to identify what could be wrong. What were your test results? If a Cory died, is it possible that there was an ammonia spike which stressed the swordtail? Is she still eating and/or swimming around? Additionally, she looks...

How to avoid impulse fish buys

Shopping list: 2 dozen feeders If it's purdy and under thurdy, buy it. I can find a tank for it.

I would point out that unless you are adding new fish, a new aquascape will do nothing. A dominant fish is a dominant fish - adding more and a change of scaping will reset the pecking order and make the fish all claim their own territory. Best of luck!

    Kribensis Size

I love how colorful they are - some real beautifies and definitely both female! In a perfect world, I would recommend selling the two females and purchasing 6-8 juvenile Kribs and let nature take its course. I would recommend either: 1. Look elsewhere for mature males 2. Purchase 2-4 smaller...

    Kribensis Size

Definitely an unconventional mixture! Your pH is perfect. I would recommend finding a new home for the goldfish - they are not suited for that tank environment and would be better off with an aquarist that can cater to their specific needs. Can you provide pictures so that we can confirm the...

    Worst Advice ever.... go!

I'll add mine periodically. Once I had an LFS employee tell me "You simply cannot keep mollies together. They will attack and kill eachvother, so I do not recommend buying multiples but if you really want them you can have them." I then pointed to the tank of approximately 1 million mollies...

In addition - I believe the female has already laid eggs again. She has picked a cave as her home and won't leave - like at all. She will poke her head out when food comes by - but refuses to actually come out. I suspect I'll be seeing more fry soon!

    Dark Knight Rams!!!

Correct - there is only one picture of them. I'm hoping to get some pictures of the male and the females I plan on purchasing next week - then all you'll see is hornwort because it grows so aggressively.

    Apisto community tank

I agree with @Avel1896 - unlikely. I'm not going to say that it's impossible that some will be lost - but the females are very good at doing what God intended! It's amazing to see my A. Cacatouides female shepherd her fry around. At least for cockatoos, the female uses her dark pectoral fins as...

    Dark Knight Rams!!!

Welp - I lost the female about a month ago. There is no indication what caused her death, but the male is growing and developing very well. I placed a special order at Petco for Golden Ram Cichlids - hoping to pick up 2-3 young females. The hope is that this male will find himself a mate. The...

    Apisto community tank

Hello, welcome to the forum! I love the IAL and the gorgeous wood~ I believe that you are correct, that is a male bitaeniata. With that being said, Apisto's are not meant to live alone. Even when breeding, they are relatively peaceful (as far as cichlids go that is). I would recommend adding...

    Snail Possibilities

So based on the info provided, it sounds like my tank environment may be able to handle snails and/or shrimp? I was under the impression that what I have is not sufficient.

    Snail Possibilities

Hey friends, I have multiple tanks running with a pH of 7.0 and I use pure R/O water and add a stabilizer. That's it. It has been my understanding that I would be unable to keep shrimp/snails due to a lack of minerals in the water. That being said - I currently have an infestation of pond...

Another question: what do you do with your dead fish?

The garden it is. My wife would literally kill me if I tried to embalm/keep any dead fish.

Apistogramma Cacatouides "Orange Flash" Breeding Journal

Thanks so much! I can't imagine how those two larger fry survived - but I guess that's part of their DNA in the wild! Super excited to see so many happy, healthy fry in a tank. As they begin to mature I'll have to figure out how many I can sell locally v. aqua bid etc. Here is a more clear...
