The cold weather here where I live according to weather dot com on Monday night is supposed to get down to 8° F/-13 C. This is very rare for my area, so rare that when it happens we mark it on the calendar as a day to remember.

You need an adjustable heater, don't use ones sold as a betta heater, that you can't adjust. A betta needs a temperature close to 80° F and you want to make sure the heater can do that.

I think I have found shell dwellers scientific name: Lamprologus ocellatus. These fish are from Lake Tanganyika. Not sure what is available for you in Canada, but I found several websites like this one....Sand City Cichlids. But these little guys are not cheap costing around 14 dollars upwards.

A centerpiece fish for a 20g is kinda tuff to figure out. Most centerpiece fish get too large for 20g and are among aggressive types of fish. You could go with a large school of tetras. But again I don't know what type of tetras would be best. Right now I am setting up a 20g long just for one...

I don't know anything about Europe for an aquarium and what to buy. But here in the states, there are lots of places to buy custom-built aquariums and stands as well as the usual standard set-ups. These might be another option for you to look around and see if anyone builds customs stands, etc.

@Essjay I can understand the reasoning why antibiotics are strictly controlled, I believe these types of medications should be controlled. I am not aware of how much control there is in the USA for meds, but I would have to believe that even antibiotics are controlled here or should be.
