    Cory's are dying

Are you using the same filter and filter media from the old tank? I moved my fish to a new tank a couple of months ago. It had a new HOB filter that came with the kit and between the stress of the move and something being wonky with the new filter I lost one fish and almost lost a second. I...

The Adventure Begins - UNS Rimless 20G Planted Tank

Sooooooo.... vacation is a great thing, other than when you come back after 2 weeks and your new tank is overrun with algae. Pics below are the tank in its completely disgusting state when I returned home this week followed by a series of pics as I took everything out, manually removed algae...

What Fish Do You Regret Buying?

I was setting up my first tank as a gift for my daughter who loves color so the plan was one of each color glofish tetras (6 different colors). I wanted to get the smallest of each color assuming it was a baby and would live longer. This was probably flawed logic as the smallest one (a purple...

This is what I came home to after 12 days of vacation

Thanks for the advice, Colin. I might try reducing or eliminating fertilizer next. I'm trying to make one change at a time and give it a couple of weeks to see what factors are having an impact. It's turning out to be quite the science experiment!

This is what I came home to after 12 days of vacation

It's a fairly new tank and I started seeing the hair algae before we left. I was managing it by removing it daily and doing frequent water changes. I had the blinds closed in the room so it was not getting any additional sunlight.

This is what I came home to after 12 days of vacation

The light was on a timer for 7 hours. I have a dimmer on it to crank it down to 50% since I have mostly low light plants. The light is a Twinstar S600. I am not sure of the wattage. It's a 20 gallon tank.

This is what I came home to after 12 days of vacation

So I just started this planted tank a few weeks before my vacation. It was doing great the first 2 weeks - no algae to speak of but then hair algae started to pop up. Obviously I have a lot to figure out with lighting and nutrients! 12 days gone and I came home to this hideous spectacle...

Fish aggression, one fish targeting and nipping at the others

I'm wondering if you took just the one platy out and put in the 2 gallon for a while to see if that takes some starch out of his sails? Not permanently, but just isolate him for a bit and let the others establish their own pecking order in the larger tank then try adding him back in after a...

Fish aggression, one fish targeting and nipping at the others

    Corydora swimming erratically

How big is the tank that the corys are in? When you say the water quality is perfect what do you mean by that? Can you post your specific parameters - ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, GH, KH, pH, temperature. What substrate do you have in the tank? Is it possible the betta that is in the...

help... i don’t know what to do...

Will the fish shop take back the serpaes? Personally I would not want to keep aggressive fish. I have skirt tetras and they can be a bit territorial but they are not what I'd call aggressive. A 30 gallon tank could make a nice community tank with peaceful fish. I would not want anything...

Should I move the rest of my Honey Gouramis to my 10 gallon?

I don't think a 10 gallon is big enough for 4 honey gouramis. You could keep one in a 10 gallon but probably need at least 20g for a pair. You could possibly treat it as a temporary hospital tank since they are not doing well in the 125. How are your water parameters?

    Wednesday Moan!!!!!!

My mom uses CBD oil only - it's not the stronger stuff with THC in it. My understanding is that the THC is the ingredient that makes people "high". Even with her severe pain , just the CBD oil (no THC) works wonders for her. She just rubs it on twice a day. There are lots of different forms...

    Wednesday Moan!!!!!!

So sorry to hear about your medical issues and pain. My mom suffers from a nerve disorder that causes chronic unbearable pain. For years she has been prescribed every pain killer out there. Eventually they all stop working. Finally we recommended she look into medical marijuana, which -...

    *Urgent* Help Weatherizing My Fish/Tanks

Maybe get some of those Hot Hands things? I know hunters will put them in their boots and gloves to stay warm. You could put a few of them around the tank and then wrap with blankets or foil or something to keep the heat in. Will you have access to hot water? If so maybe you could...

    String hair algae

I got some amanos from my local fish store and they are TINY. I think most fish would pick these things off in a heartbeat. Right now I have them in a tank with just plants. I'm trying to fatten them up! I am also very disappointed in the amano shrimp's hair algae eating performance to...

    Feeding my community tank.

Try to watch how much makes it down to the substrate. If a lot of it is making it down there before eating maybe try feeding less during the feeding session and do 2 feedings per day. For what it's worth I'm a habitual over feeder. I just don't do a good job gauging how much I'm putting in...

    Sick betta?

Where are you buying your fish from? If it's a big box like PetSmart you might want to reconsider future purchases and obtain your next betta from a reputable breeder or local fish shop (and even some of those are questionable).

    Automatic fish feeders

I recently bought this feeder for my 20 gallon tanks in preparation for an upcoming 2 week vacation. I tested them yesterday and they work great. They do have a clamp that you can use if your tank has no lid. One of my tanks has a lid so I just set the feeder on top of it with the feeder...

Trying to figure out a way to feed everyone without feeding too much

What about some of that repashy gel stuff? You put chunks of it in and it sinks to the bottom and fish have to kind of graze on it. Might be around long enough for the bottom dwellers to get a good bit of it.

    Problems in my shrimp tank

Are you sure your water is hard without a test kit? I assumed my water was hard before I started keeping fish (and now shrimp). When I got a test kit, I had 0 gh - absolutely no minerals in my water. I now dose with Seachem Equilibrium to get to about 4 dgh.

One long thread of betta questions so I don't clutter the forum

Amazon Swords will get huge - maybe too big for your 10 gallon tank. Anubias are really good for betta as they do well in low light and have big leaves - the bettas like to rest on them. Java Fern would also be good - low light and places for the fish to hide. A 10 gallon for your betta is...

Questions re: quarantine/hospital tanks. Set up all the time?

If I had the space for one I might leave it running all the time. I have a spare 10 gallon tank with a spare filter and tons of heaters lying around. When I get new fish going forward I'll set up as a quarantine tank or use as a hospital tank as needed. I have enough established filter media...

    New Tank Additions

My shy one didn't eat for a few days and I felt the same - that he would never eat. He'd come out a bit when food was in the tank but seemed too afraid to eat with the group. He got over that, LOL. Eats fine now although he does still kind of hang back from the others at the start of feeding...

    New Tank Additions

I don't have any experience specifically with discus, but in my 20g tetra tank I have one skirt tetra that does the same thing. He is the newest addition to the tank - we got him several weeks ago. He hides behind one of the plants at the back of the tank and stays to himself. I've seen no...
