It's a fairly new tank and I started seeing the hair algae before we left. I was managing it by removing it daily and doing frequent water changes. I had the blinds closed in the room so it was not getting any additional sunlight.

I don't think a 10 gallon is big enough for 4 honey gouramis. You could keep one in a 10 gallon but probably need at least 20g for a pair. You could possibly treat it as a temporary hospital tank since they are not doing well in the 125. How are your water parameters?

Where are you buying your fish from? If it's a big box like PetSmart you might want to reconsider future purchases and obtain your next betta from a reputable breeder or local fish shop (and even some of those are questionable).

Are you sure your water is hard without a test kit? I assumed my water was hard before I started keeping fish (and now shrimp). When I got a test kit, I had 0 gh - absolutely no minerals in my water. I now dose with Seachem Equilibrium to get to about 4 dgh.
