    Are my fish full?

I love it! We'll start every meeting like this: "Hello, I'm Joann. It's been 3 hours since I last overfed my fish". (Support Group responds in unison): "Hi, Joann".

    Are my fish full?

No - I do not have anything in the tank but the tetras. I might cut back to once a day or try to convince myself that none of them are going to starve if I don't put so much food in the tank at each feeding. IT'S SO HARD! Is there a support group for over-feeders?

    Are my fish full?

So I am wondering if I am overfeeding my fish.... it's a distinct possibility as I'm Italian and overfeeding comes naturally. I have 6 skirt tetras in a 20g tank. I feed twice a day and skip feedings on Sunday. When I feed them they initially go after the food and take some in. Then there...

Fish Has White Spots And Is Dying (Day 4)

I can't really tell from the photos but is it possible this is some sort of infection vs. him getting attacked? The fish. needs some source oxygenating the water. He will not live long in the bowl without a filter or something circulating the water and putting oxygen into it. How are...

    Been a bad week

I think the planets must be aligned in the wrong sort of way or it's just 2020 going out with a bang. It's been a tough week here, too. Lost 2 fish and some other nonsense that caused a lot of stress. I'm sure everything will start to look up soon. It's important to give yourself some grace...

    Rasboras fighting

I think that could do the trick. You're doing a great job of looking out for your fish. :)

    Rasboras fighting

I believe your tank is too small for that many fish and it may be contributing to the aggression. I think just the 9 rasboras alone should be in a 29 gallon (even without the corys added in). Just my two cents, maybe others can chime in with other theories.

Using media from established tank but no nitrates

Thanks for the peace of mind.

Using media from established tank but no nitrates

I moved all of the substrate, the filter and the filter cartridge. I also moved the decorations. So everything came over from the old tank other than the water.

Using media from established tank but no nitrates

Yes, I am going to test every 24 hours at least until I make sure everything is staying consistent.

Using media from established tank but no nitrates

Thank you. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to have issues in the new tank.

Using media from established tank but no nitrates

It's 0. I use filtered water so there are no nitrates, ammonia, chlorine, etc. in the water. I also add Dr. Tim's First Defense with each water change just in case but I only fill the tank with water from the filter.

Using media from established tank but no nitrates

Yes, I moved the fish over as well. I had 4 in the 10 gallon and I added them along with 2 that I had in a quarantine tank. So there are 6 now in the 20 gallon. In the 10 gallon my nitrate level stayed really consistent around 10 - 20. It is not a planted tank. All plastic.

Using media from established tank but no nitrates

I recently upgraded from a 10g to a 20g tank. The 10g had cycled successfully and all the parameters looked great (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, less than 10 nitrate). I had 4 skirt tetras in the tank so a decent bio-load. When moving the fish to the 20g this weekend, I used all the substrate from...

Transferred fish to new tank... bobbing near top

It was water splash noise - no matter the level I set the flow. The filter itself wasn't noisy in terms of motor. It just made a lot of splash noise even when I adjusted the water level in the tank.

Transferred fish to new tank... bobbing near top

So, the TopFin filter has this propeller thingy that came apart when I was getting it ready to go in the tank (not sure what it's called but it looks like a little propeller). So I put it back together but it just seemed like a flimsy filter overall. And the water flow noise was LOUD. The...

    BETTA EMERGENCY

So sorry, @CyrussMom. I have lost fish this week for the first time and it is harder than I expected. Seems like you did everything you could for your betta. Just know that you are not alone and I hope you are doing okay.

Transferred fish to new tank... bobbing near top

Thank you for weighing in. So.... I think the filter that came with the kit was a piece of crap. It's the TopFin 20 gallon kit from PetSmart. I should have known better. So I took that filter off. I have 2 Marina (I think it's a Fluval brand?) filters - one for 15g and one for 10g. I have...

Transferred fish to new tank... bobbing near top

Sorry forgot to attach. I have 1 video and 1 pic. Sorry for the bad quality - I am not turning the lid light on yet so as not to stress them out more. I am not able to get the video to upload for some reason. Sorry! There is one (the blue one) that seems to be doing it the most.

Transferred fish to new tank... bobbing near top

Today I moved my 6 glofish (skirt) tetras from a 10 gallon to a 20 gallon tank. I used the same substrate and included some filter media from the 10g in the 20g to bring over the beneficial bacteria. I use water from a filtered source with no chlorine, ammonia, etc. I tested the water and all...

    BETTA EMERGENCY

Do you use a water conditioner with your water? (to remove chlorine and chloramine, etc from the tap). Also, do you have a small heater in the tank? you may need to go to the nearest pet store and get some test strips or a test kit to see what your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels are. It...

    Help! Guppies are barely moving.

It is usually more stressful to move the fish vs. keeping them in during the water change. How are they doing today?

Trying to figure out a way to feed everyone without feeding too much

What about some super fast sinking pellets? I had some pellets that sunk so fast my tetras couldn't even get to them (they only eat mid to top of tank). All the pellets wound up rotting in the substrate. And they weren't even supposed to be the sinking type. I'm guessing the ones that are...

    Help! Guppies are barely moving.

Seachem Prime is a good product. Just make sure you are adding it to the water before it goes in the tank. I am not sure how big your tank is but do a large (50% or more) water change to get rid of the ammonia. If the fish and food have been in the tank a while you may need to vaccuum the...

    Help! Guppies are barely moving.

Have you tested your tap water? Most tap water in the US probably has chlorine in it, in which case you need to use a water conditioner to make it safe for fish. The ammonia level should be 0. I'm guessing even .25 can be toxic to small fish like guppies. Do you have a test kit or the...

    Help! Guppies are barely moving.

Are they new fish? Can you tell us about your tank size and water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate)? What is your water source? If you are using tap water did you dechlorinate?

    Seachem Prime Questions...

I wasn't suggesting the large batch be kept for future use. Just an idea as OP sounded like they needed a quick solution.

    Seachem Prime Questions...

do as small a dose as you can measure - 1ml or 1/2 ml - whatever you can measure. Add to a small container with measurements on it and an easy measurement of water like ounces. Fill up to 10 ounces add your small amount of Prime and then just pour in 1/10th of the water into your tank. I hope...

Terrified of filter sucking up fish

I have a sponge from my old tank that I'll (hopefully) be able to use in the new, larger one. Otherwise I'll buy one. Better safe than sorry.

    I lost 17 fish today

I don't have any educated guess for you but I just wanted to say I am so sorry for the loss of your fish. We lost our first one today and my daughter is heartbroken. I can't imagine 17. So sorry.

Terrified of filter sucking up fish

I am not adding any other types of fish - just the white skirt tetras. There will be 6 or 7 of them in the 20 gallon once I upgrade. None of them are what I'd consider babies. They are all in the 1 1/2" range at this point.
  36. M

Terrified of filter sucking up fish

Thanks for the info! The current 10g has one of those little sponge things on the bottom of the tube that extends down into the water - the intake? The 20g filter (the TopFin brand) does not have anything to go over that tube (they call it a 'strainer'). I am planning on taking the one...

Terrified of filter sucking up fish

Okay so this may be an irrational fear.... but I read a lot of reviews online and keep seeing comments from people - across various brands - that their fish got sucked up into the filter somehow. I'm fairly new to the hobby and I just don't see how this is possible with the filters I have and am...

    My first fish casualty

    My first fish casualty

Dang it, y'all.... I lost my first fish today. It's my daughter's tank and it was her favorite fish. Ironically its name was Little Angel. It was one of 4 glofish tetras in a 10 gallon tank. The water parameters have been good and consistent over the past month or so I've had the tank (no...

How to clean without freaking out fish?

@mcordelia - all great points - thank you so much. I am upgrading this weekend so hopefully the bigger space will give them more areas to get away from the evil gravel vac. I didn't want to take them out while cleaning as I figured that might be just as traumatic. So hopefully the bigger tank...
