If it's a small bowl you probably won't be able to put a filter on it but maybe you could get something like an airstone just to oxygenate the water while he's in there until you get him in his tank.

Your kit should have come with a chart to read the results. See attached photos - one is for the strips and the other for the bottles / drops. The chart will tell you your results in PPM.
