Did we get ich for Christmas?

Okay this is very helpful. Thank you again for all of your advice. I'll post here if I have more questions. Really appreciate it.

Did we get ich for Christmas?

Hi, @essjay - thanks so much for replying on Christmas. There is nothing visible on the bodies of any of the fish. There is no sprinkled salt look on the bodies or even the fins. It's just these larger globs of white (for lack of a better explanation) on the rear fins of the 2 that are...

Did we get ich for Christmas?

Hi, everyone - Merry Christmas. I have a 20 gallon tank with 6 glofish tetras. 2 of them are long-fin variety. I started noticing some spots on the back fin of just the 2 long-fin ones and can't figure out if it's just variation in the tail tissue or if it's the beginnings of ich. The other...

    Guppy developing bent spine

If you have .05 ppm ammonia that is too high. Nitrite should be 0 as well. Was your tank cycled before you added fish or are you doing a fish-in cycle?

New betta resting on the bottom of the tank.

Could you post your water parameters? Ammonia levels, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH and water temperature. Are you doing water changes and substrate cleaning? If so how much and how often? What are you feeding and how often? Does he hang out there all the time or just part of the day...

Are larger air stone bubbles better than smaller air bubbles?

I don't know that it matters from an oxygenating perspective but the larger bubbles make more of a blub-blub noise whereas you don't hear anything with the smaller bubbles.

    Mollies Dying

I think you actually posted that above as I was asking the question. I would suggest getting test strips or a kit to figure out your hardness and alkalinity. It may or may not be an issue. Or you can take a sample in to a pet store and ask them to test it for you but you should have supplies...

    Mollies Dying

I'm sorry - I know it's frustrating. Do you know your other water parameters - GH, KH, pH? Maybe there is something about your water that is not suitable for them? Just trying to go through process of elimination and maybe some other more experienced folks will weigh in, too.

    Mollies Dying

Only other thought is that mollies are schooling fish so probably want a bigger shoal or they might get stressed. Also I believe there should be a much larger number of females than males. With a 20+ gallon tank you could definitely get more mollies. I had a schooling fish and kept it in a...

Okay good. What about lighting? Do you have a light and if so how long is it on each day? Also, any aggression from other fish in the tank?

What temperature are you keeping the tank? Do you have a heater?
  17. M

New tank, disaster or at least it is to me

I'd say your fish were stressed from the move and possible big swing in temperature change during the moves from one tank into a holding bucket then into their new home. I understand your frustration. I tried to help my daughter's fish by upgrading them from a 10 gallon tank to a 20g. During...

Fluval Peat Granules to lower pH

Yep, it's definitely not garden variety (pun intended) peat. I have some of that and decided against it out of an abundance of caution. What I got is a product from Fluvall specifically for aquarium use.

    New additions, so cute

I just made the noise SQUEEEEEEEE out loud. I am obsessed with corys. They have got to be the cutest fish out there.

New HOB filter is extremely loud

The only quiet HOB filter I've come across is the Marina slim. I have the Marina S20 on the 20 gallon tank in my daughter's bedroom and sometimes I check to make sure it's actually running because you can't hear it at all (no motor noise and it doesn't make waterfall splash noise either). I've...

Thoughts on how to keep small fish out of my overflow?

Super glue is frequently used in aquariums. It is fish safe. So you might have to take the overflow unit out if possible or lower the water level enough so you can dry it off then run a thin line of super glue around and affix whatever barrier you are going to use. I'm guessing there are...

Thoughts on how to keep small fish out of my overflow?

If you're referring to the tube with the hole, I would affix a small piece of panty hose around the hole with a rubber band. The pantyhose won't affect water flow that much and it should be a good barrier. For the vents on the box looking thingy, you might also be able to use a cut out of...

Siphon pump system recommendations (not python)

Hubby just bought me this one off Amazon. If it doesn't work I'll try the ones Utar and Colin recommended. I'll let you know how it goes! This pump has lots of reviews so hopefully it will get the job done better than me sloshing gallon buckets back and forth through the whole house...

Siphon pump system recommendations (not python)

Thanks @Colin_T. Hubs has a cart with wheels that I was thinking of stealing - I mean borrowing - to wheel around my 5 gallon container. Unfortunately I don't have the ability to hook into a garden hose or tap and run a hose all the way to where my tank is. Just the way our house is set up...

Siphon pump system recommendations (not python)

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good gravel vac system that comes with some sort of pump that allows you to put water back into the tank from a bucket which is lower than the tank? I don't have the ability to hook up to a faucet with something like a python system and I'm killing myself...

Corydora staying in the corner of the tank

I don't know that your water parameters are bad for the corys... maybe someone more experienced can weigh in on that but I think they should be fine based on your water parameters. I am more inclined to think the issues are tank size, number of them in the tank and the substrate (it's gravel I...

Corydora staying in the corner of the tank

Can you tell us more about the tank - tank size and the other water parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, GH, KH, water temperature)? What other fish or livestock are in the tank? Also, corys like to be in groups of 6 or more. He may feel stressed because there are not enough of his kind...

Fluval Peat Granules to lower pH

I have a 20 gallon tank and would like to lower the pH slightly. The pH has been getting slowly higher from my (filtered) tap for some reason. A couple of months ago I was a 7.6 - 7.8 and now I'm at 8.2. I have glofish tetras (skirt tetras) only in the tank. They all seem to be doing very...

What would be best to eat algae in a 20g?

I've only had the tank since October and probably won't do live plants in there anytime soon. And I believe with 6 of the tetras (we might add a 7th) I'm pretty well stocked with fish for a 20 gallon. I was just thinking of shrimp or snails to eat algae but since I don't have much of a problem...

What would be best to eat algae in a 20g?

Those are long-fins. Apparently they have 'regular' ones and long fin ones. The red one and electric green one have the long fins. Right - they are glofish tetras. I usually just say skirt tetras so everyone knows the specific type of tetra I'm referring to.

Urgent help please for my daughters much loved poorly Betta

I think the tank is too cold for a Betta. They would do better between 78 - 80 degrees. Can you confirm nitrites are at 10 and not nitrates? As others have mentioned, nitrites should be 0.

What would be best to eat algae in a 20g?

It is a new filter. I just upgraded from a 10g to a 20g about a week or 2 ago and I got a new filter in the process. I did transfer over the filter media but it's all in good shape - no real build up or anything to speak of.

What would be best to eat algae in a 20g?

Yes, so it's mainly just on the cords to the heater and the filter motor box thingy. In that photo it's the airline tubing to the clam shell. So is it maybe not algae and just something normal that happens in aquariums? Should I just keep wiping it off during water changes? Thank you for the...

Here are 2 photos of my daughter's tank - one is a wide shot and one is the best close-up I could get of one of the cords with the brown slimy stuff on it.
