You have too many fish in that 10 gallon tank. Corydoras catfish like to be in groups of 6 or more and need a 20 gallon tank minimum. The filter is fine for the tank, just too many fish.

I have a 20 gallon tank (taller, not longer) with 5 glofish (skirt) tetras. To be blunt... they are jerks. Very nippy, always chasing each other, and just generally not living up to the 'peaceful' label that most websites describe them as. If I had a longer tank I would get 2 or 3 more to see...

Is your water hard? Only other thing I can think of. I believe guppies need harder water.

what about a small nano heater? I just saw one on Amazon for $11. You could probably get a cheap one from PetSmart, too. Their TopFin brand is super affordable. I wouldn't recommend it for long-term use but should be good for an emergency short-term backup.

@AbbeysDad - how does this work with a lid that covers the hole tank? Mine has a feeding door that you have to press to lift open. Otherwise the entire top of the tank is covered by a lid that rests on a little lip all the way around the edge of the tank. You mentioned you keep your tanks...

I am not sure if this would be a cause, but the pH is a little high. You can bring it down with some peat in a filter bag. I have used Fluval peat granules in a mesh bag in my HOB filter and it works well. What temperature are you keeping the tank at and what and how often are you feeding...

The nitrates might be a little high. Are you doing water changes with gravel vac or just adding new water? Is the tank heated? What is the tank size?

@essjay - sorry one more question... should I add the aquarium salt along with the heat at this time? I'm assuming even if it's not ich the salt will not harm them if dosed correctly for the tank.
