    Max the Betta

Beautiful betta. Looking forward to seeing more posts about Max! I'm sure you'll make some great memories with your grand-niece taking care of him.

Yep! It's on! Thanks for the heads up! (sorry Alaska and Hawaii)

New Beta isn’t eating, and hanging around the top constantly

My fish (not betta, admittedly) will not eat pellets. No matter what. Doesn't matter the brand, the size... they will not eat pellets. They go crazy for flakes and bloodworms so I have just kind of given up on pellets. Might be worth trying a different type of food. But in order to rule...

What "showcase" fish would you keep with corys?

Thank you, Gypsum. I do indeed have soft water. I've spent time doing some research to make sure the species I'm considering should do well in my water. This hobby has been such a learning experience - I'm really enjoying it! Appreciate the suggestion of the apistogramma. I had not...

The Adventure Begins - UNS Rimless 20G Planted Tank

So today was sand washing day. In a previous post I put a picture of this paint mixer that attaches to a drill. I used that to agitate the sand and it worked like a charm! I put the sand in some clean buckets, added water from the garden hose, agitated with the mixer thingy, dumped out the...

What "showcase" fish would you keep with corys?

I've definitely been watching their site. I love their videos and Lisa seems to take really good care of the bettas. I have several weeks before I'm ready for my fish and I am going to get the corys in their first.

What "showcase" fish would you keep with corys?

So I'm currently setting up a 20g planted tank and my plan is to start with 6 sterbai corys. I'll be washing my sand this weekend and getting the hardscape and plants all set up over the next week or so and starting the cycling process. I was thinking of getting a betta - probably a male -...

    Betta & Corydoras

No, corys need to be with 6 of their own kind ideally and you need a 20 gallon minimum unless you are going with something small like a pygmy cory. Even then I wouldn't do anything other than your betta in the 5 gallon.

Setting up new Tank HELP NEEDED!!!!

Why do you think your pH is too low? My LFS specializes in saltwater tanks and they use RO water with a pH of about 6. If you want to raise your pH I know there are substrates out there which will raise pH and you can add something like crushed coral as well. I'll let others chime in but...

    Fishless cycle questions

What level of ammonia would be harmful to plants? I am planning to do a fishless cycle in a planted tank and certainly don't want to kill the plants I just put in. Any guidelines?

The Adventure Begins - UNS Rimless 20G Planted Tank

I'll let it do its thing for a while. I can't get my fish until after we take a trip in February. So there's no rush to speed along the cycle. I may use the beneficial bacteria if the tank is still not cycled when we get back from our vacation. I think after I added the Tetra Safe Start to...

The Adventure Begins - UNS Rimless 20G Planted Tank

My husband really likes the dumbos. I would like a full moon and definitely blue. Although I gravitate towards the full moons and half moons, I've seen some blue rim bettas that are phenomenal. So we'll see. But I don't think I can go without one of those amazing flowing tails. Maybe a...

The Adventure Begins - UNS Rimless 20G Planted Tank

Yeah, the sand is expensive but since I'm getting corys I wanted to get something that I know for sure is meant for aquariums and won't somehow hurt the fish. And in the grand scheme of things after I look at what I paid for the tank, the stand, the light, and the hardscape stuff, I was like -...

The Adventure Begins - UNS Rimless 20G Planted Tank

Just realized... can't get plants until I have a light! So went to my friendly LFS and got the Twinstar 600S. It was probably more than I needed for my initial plan for this tank but I can totally see myself eventually wanting some of those awesome high light, red and orangey and pinkish...

The Adventure Begins - UNS Rimless 20G Planted Tank

So you put the sand in buckets and run hose water through it. Then you stick the drill bit thing (it's actually a paint or concrete mixer attachment) into the bucket and it agitates the sand while the water continues to rinse the sand. I suppose it kicks up the super fine particles of dirt...

    So Upset!

OH NO! that is so sad! I am surprised since Aqua Huna is the supplier recommended by Aquarium Co-op. That is really unfortunate.

    20G Stocking

Hmmm that actually seems like a lot. I have a 20 gallon with 5 skirt tetras in it and I would probably only go to about 7 or 8 of them, max. I am not sure about the tiger barbs with the tetras in terms of compatibility. I think the tetras would get nipped by the barbs. Also, the tetras are...

    Shrimps in 5 gallon

I think you can do 2-5 shrimp per gallon in general. You might want to start on the lower end as I think they multiply a lot?

The Adventure Begins - UNS Rimless 20G Planted Tank

Yes - that is exactly my plan! I get all the hardscape in this weekend and will put that in with the sand and then plants then start the cycling process. We have a trip planned in February so I wasn't planning on getting fish until after we got back. So it gives me plenty of time to cycle...

We have sand! I'll be washing it out this weekend - no time to really go at it until then because of this pesky job I must maintain to support my fish and Disney habits. It's CaribSea sand in sunset gold. Me likey! Hubs made me this temporary rolling cart thingy to keep the tank off the...

I would love to see photos of 30 gallon long tanks (36"long)

If you click on "forums" there are 2 forums that are for tank journals and builds (usually lots of photos) and there is another specific forum for photos. You can also try to use the search bar at the top right of this site for "30 long" although you'll probably get a good many irrelevant...

New Micro Tank! (13 L Tank) Where Do I Start?

I used this tank as a quarantine tank. It is too small for anything other than maybe a betta or some shrimp. A shrimp tank would be pretty cool if that is something you are interested in? Personally I love bettas and they like to be alone - they are too aggressive for most tank mates so...

TANNINS! That's all I have for you today, kids. A soaking piece of wood releasing tannins. Well, other than the stand I ordered online apparently is not in stock even though it's listed as in stock on the website. Seriously - cannot find this stand anywhere in the US. Looks like I'll...
