    Where are the Hawaiian aquarists?

Not what I pictured! I expected posts or even front yards to have a tropical pond in Hawaii. These days though I know Covid has made things rough. I can't find albino giant danios these days in the SF bay area. They used to be standards as every store had them. Not now.

    Where are the Hawaiian aquarists?

I havent gotten any PM. There has to be a few fish lovers in Hawaii with outdoor ponds with glass. I see that in vids from Singapore/Malaysia. Oscars to Discus in ponds..wild stuff as Johnny used to say. Guppies are nice...but Arowana are nicer. At least in Hawaii you could use a better quality...

    Just visited a aquascape store

I asked a local owner why he doesn't sell Co equipment or even have a natural aquarium on display. "Not in the best part of the area". He says if he was in Blackhawk.. But I tried to tell him you increase the interest.... I tried.

    Where are the Hawaiian aquarists?

Have you noticed that there are none who post regularly or to even be found? THEY who could grow plant or monster fish tanks in the backyard- the whole range- are not to be found. On youtube..ok,one. He keeps guppys!..not exactly exotica. South Florida has many interesting channels..but Hawaii...

    Help! Massive algae growth

'Didn't do a water change for months and the algae cleared" Say that on ukaps or any other plant board and they would ban you. But,you would be right. That's the best way in lo tech to keep the water clear and the algae off the rocks. Clean the PRE filter! Often!..but just top off the water...

    Unpopular Opinions (fish related)

Eventually a fish will get sick on the best of fish keepers. Since my last posting the riddance of BGA has gotten even more complete. I treated for a Rainbow fish and to stop any spread in its tracks and got as a bonus bad algae removal. BBA? Still there. Seems to have reduced, but still there. I...

    Blackbearb removal

Use a toothbrush. Any brand. I have learned that BBA is not killed off by antibiotics as BGA,some types of brown and gray algae are. BBA is in its own league.

Buy the Seachem Iron and dilute 50% to last longer.

I went over the Seachem website and they said the EDTA is only absorbed by roots ( hence my Ozelot sword plants explosion of larger leaves) and not so good or at all by epiphytes. I could have read all this before buying..but until you do,you don't really understand. I am glad there is no fish...

Buy the Seachem Iron and dilute 50% to last longer.

Well Steven,I now see what you mean. I did eventually have the EDTA cloud the water-something that never happened with Seachem. I put back in the carbon sock and today the water looks fine and the sock rust colored. I will use less but more often? Eventually I will order what you posted and use...

    Rotala Rotundifolia

Here's a Hygrophila costatus (old name was angustifolia) with that pinkish blush. Never saw one with that before. I credit the extra iron. Alternanthera and Ludwigia also in the "more color" camp with more iron.

    Rotala Rotundifolia

No further needs. I saw somebody pump a European top of the line whole ferts and the color was brown. Iron. So,its the main ingredient and why I decided why buy "part iron" on a all in one when pure iron would out do the all in one? Since my fish are fed well, etc.
  13. S

    Rotala Rotundifolia

Since I increased the color in some plants has shown like never before. In fact one - Hygrophila costata is showing a purty pinkish red color at the base of the leaves. I can't find a photo online that matches. Later I will post a pic of it. Rotala indica for me is showing deep red undersides...

Iron to low tech is like Co2 is to high tech.

If you are using Co2,that puts you in high tech. Low techys I think just don't want the bother of cylinders and driving across town to keep them filled. But they do want the best they can get from dirted fertilized aquariums with plants and sure, the better the lighting the better the results...

I changed the title to more like what my point is!..Shouldnt have used "vs".

Iron to low tech is like Co2 is to high tech.

One more thought. Iron comes chelated. I wonder if that chelation doesn't also open up other micronutrients in your water to the plants? Its why I would think you don't need to add so many trace elements after using chelated iron.

Iron to low tech is like Co2 is to high tech.

I like to make it as simple as possible. All aspects of aquarium keeping. Its why I won't ever go back to reef,it's not something that can be made simple and look great. Low price is part of simple. I've seen many vids were dirted tanks kept up with Co2 tanks for weeks..and then the dirted...

Iron to low tech is like Co2 is to high tech.

Aluminum is linked to Alzheimer's. Even the small amounts in deodorants is taking a risk. The comparison of Co2- Iron is that iron can also give all the plants in low tech a boost. Not as dramatic with Co2 and all that fizzy water but I've found iron to be much more important for aquarium plant...

Can you have too many plants in an Aquarium

Closer to no than yes. If you use up all the swimming space to the point the aquarium becomes blocked off to the "pelagic" fish like Danios, then you have to trim back or choose lower growing plants. I've gone through plants that were too successful and the constant pruning was a chore. Its why...

Who sits and just watches their tank for extended periods?

Its in a warm room and sunlight streams in all winter. Hard to beat that. Mostly I think of ways to tweak improvements in the aquarium. Calming creative thoughts. I can say big aquariums like big TV's never get boring to look at.

Iron to low tech is like Co2 is to high tech.

Tom Barr's formula works because he's pumping Co2. Same as it works for everybody who runs high tech Co2, formula or not. Low tech rules change. Iron is like the Co2 in them. Something that makes improvement's in days after starting that routine. Not a long subtle change-lol. It's why I now...

    MD Fishtanks using Glo Danios.

He's the first aquascaper of note to use glo fish. In today's show he added 10 of the little guys into a 30 gallon or so aquarium with other nano fish and none of them are glo. He didn't seem to notice what he had created. YouTube.

How many believe that a form of life could exist elsewhere in the universe?

One clue for an advanced civilization and survival? They've not sent a single probe to us. Not one from either four or 400 inhabited advanced species in the Milky Way. They know a bad idea when they hear it.

Iron to low tech is like Co2 is to high tech.

I've been adding a teaspoon per day (for the 240 gallon) the last few days to see what would happen. What a surprisaroo as Blueys Dad would say when the long thin leafy Hygrophila angustifolia just today started to show color at the base of the leaves. Had to go to Google images to see very few...

How many believe that a form of life could exist elsewhere in the universe?

I read a new study that says there are four advanced alien civilizations in the Milky Way. ALL to be considered hostile. We should not be sending probes with info of where to find us. Could they be worse than Putin?

Iron to low tech is like Co2 is to high tech.

Iron in high doses yes,is toxic..but my Dr wasn't worried!(for anemia)..Like I said, hardy fish and slowly learn what amount of iron accomplishes the goal. I think most tap waters are close enough on micro's and macro's..but Iron is always never in natural high enough amounts. Plus the food you...

Iron to low tech is like Co2 is to high tech.

I see lots of low tech versus hi while doing the dirted tank method for low tech and that makes it a tighter race. But they never dose Iron in the low tech. I'm sure with some hardy fish and consistent dosing low tech would close the gap even more. Both using advanced gro lights of course...

Saw a video about a plant that grows above the tank?

This acrylic aquarium is about 40 years old. In those days they did a full cover except for three 16" x 8" cut outs. and three 2" x8" cutouts for the hang on back filters and siphon tubes in those days. The Syngonium started out as cuttings in the "filter" opening to the far left It just grew...

    Rotala Rotundifolia

Why not? If the fish show no problems- the more iron the better for plants. They say iron stimulates the red color cells in the plants to turn color. Not sure if that's exactly true- but Iron for plants is something they absorb greedily.
  37. S

    Rotala Rotundifolia

Try adding iron. It's the ultimate water plant boost.

That's one of the newer Aglaonema cultivars. I forget the name but something like neon pink. The stems glow when backlit.

Saw a video about a plant that grows above the tank?

Other people will tell you to use Pothos but,it has a big drawback,if it finds a wall? It attaches itself like super glue. Just melds into the painted walls. Syngonium does not do that. Anyways- MANY types of houseplants love roots in water the rest above. You could try Dracaenas. Lots of...

Saw a video about a plant that grows above the tank?

Here's my 240 gallon with Syngonium .Just to let you know, cichlids will eat roots in fact my plant is all rope like roots until they go into the sand and gravel substrate,THEN they develop the fine roots. The Rainbows eat any of those fine roots that are exposed.
