Update on outdoor Shubunkin aquarium of 60 gallons.

Shady ponds are great habitat for lush greenery where water splatters. When you use a lava type rock even better odds as they provide great sponge like capacity to hold water and add nutrients to boot. I feed them every other day. I change water as needed. It has an undergravel filter and when...

Update on outdoor Shubunkin aquarium of 60 gallons.

They were little 3" fish about three years ago. The small one is progeny. This aquarium is in my backyard. It has a fake rock background and for 2" past that I put in Syngonium cuttings and they help filter the water. The ferns and mosses all are naturalized. Nature put them there not me.

    Red Tiger Zenkeri Lotus

btw, Tropica told me via youtube that "Sometimes Tiger Lotus do that". Yet, plenty of people get lucky and have them cover the aquarium with large red leaves. I think I should have upped the iron as it grew larger. Just a hunch.

    Badger's 150g Rio Negro/Orinoco Flooded Rain Forest

I ordered"weeping moss" from somebody who offered it at near half the price of others. I get it and it looks more like a Java moss. At least a dark green Java moss. We will see if it develops the Fir tree branching of weeping moss.

What's TWS? I've been longing for albino giant danios. Once standard and always for sale, now havent seen one in two years or more.

    LED lighting vs fluorescent lighting.

I can't find 40 watt fluorescent bulbs for fish anymore. So,are the HYGGERS color rendition as good as gro lights and their slight purplish accent? When my bulbs or fixture go down,I want to order the HYGGER that seems to be a good value. Or is it?

Ohio Fish Rescue put two 8" albino TinFoil barbs in the 2,000 gallon with a 24" RTC. I posted here ( those fish won't last long) and sure enough on the very next vid, those fish are no longer in the 2,000. I did spot ONE albino in a 1,000 gallon. RTC in with something soft finned like those...

Amazon Sword "Red Ozelot" the perfect low tech plant?

I cant get over how this plant is like the 100' Atomic Sword Plant..even bigger by the day. I will hold off new photos until its double the size it is now. Plus- it looks perfect. Not a speck of algae-knock on wood- on it. The marbled pattern is so different,so distinct. Its getting direct...

George and MD and all the rest on youtube seem to ALWAYS get the XXXL 2" pots of aquatic plants. Not fair. I order and get strands of plants. Like I'm not as important as youtubers? Huh,huh? :vote: 😉

    Rotala Rotundifolia

I think you were dosing more than could be taken up by the plants. So,adjust slightly down and when the plant mass increases- increase the iron to keep pace. I've grown plants and worked in horticulture and have never seen iron produce such incredible results as in aquarium plants. Also,my...

Can anyone identify this white dust on anubias?

Could it be the eggs of Nerite snails? They did that to my rocks and it took months for those to fade away.

    Rotala Rotundifolia

Is the cloudy from bloom or the iron? If its the iron? reduce the amount per day. I had the same thing happen..the water was not crystal clear. No iron for three days cleared it up. Fish were fine. I now add per day 1/3 of what I was adding and my swords are exploding into growth and deep colors.

    Is my Alernanthera dying?

I think a few days with bright lighting will help it recover from being shipped. Looks fine overall. You could hit it with a shot of iron, that's always a good thing for plants.

What kind of moss is this?

It's probably a lichen that was growing on a twig- and then fell into the creek.

    Cryptocoryne parva- ultra small.

Every now and then I try one of those "needs Co2" type plants. This might be one of them. I have to ask- do they come in a dwarf size? Because my clump is ultra small and very deep glossy green. Not like the C. parva I remember of years ago. That was not nearly as dark green or small. Still...

The best answer to why use antibiotics on BGA.

I dont agree. You might as well say fish should not be treated. Why them live while you create Covid 20 for the rest of us? I have plants at a size that would sell for the same price as a prized fish. Also..if you ever used erythromycin on BGA..seeing the algae turn orange overnight was a...

The best answer to why use antibiotics on BGA.

BGA is a bacteria. You notice Alex just says flat out erythromycin nukes BGA and makes no bones about it. Your plants cost good money are worth even more months later so BGA must go.

Low tech planted tanks (PIC HEAVY)

Interesting post. I've been hedging my bets also by putting some of the new plants into a 2 gallon terrarium. In case you're wondering,Hydrocotyle tripartita is one that does great that way and as you all know its not cheap to buy.Usually it's just a few dainty stems. for your $7 It's going to...

They are touchy. I had one thrive, then dive. From red to dead. I changed nothing. So why it died in my no Co2 aquarium is anybody's guess.

Please can someone identify this green intruder

Touchy plants I had a seemingly thriving plant just one day decided to shut down and in days it was dead. Its stem had shriveled when pulled on it..just faded away. Best for Co2 or high light, high iron low tech tanks. I had close, but not close enough I guess.

    current recommended antibiotic for cyanobacteria??

I thought it was ammonia nitrate that was the bomb? 2. Erythromycin is the best cyano killer..up to you to decide if you will use it. 3. Its said Mollies will eat BGA. The American Flagfish I think..not sure, also eats hair algae too. Also, the Hydrogen Peroxide might have killed the Bristle...

Tropical fish gone wild in Los Angeles.

I saw a vid of Fern Dell in Griffith park in Los Angeles and was surprised to see in the shady creek,Platys. Not the plain black one either, they were colorful green/yellows with long dorsal fins. I know Convicts are wild down south inland, but I wonder what else in the city area is living in...

    It's tropical today...

I used to do that long ago. Aquarists can never know the sight of Red Hooks and Silver Dollar fish rising to eat pellet food like graceful trout. Same for Tinfoil barbs. I prefer the round pools because with a 1-2,000 gph pump you can make a stream like habitat...fish rest in the middle and some...

Even bigger...photo tomorrow. I've never had any Echinodorus do as well. Ever. What did I find when I moved a plant near it? A layer of iron from my use of the EDTA version. The sand looked like laterite. So it might be true that the EDTA works best on aquarium plants with strong root systems...

    Where are the Hawaiian aquarists?

San Francisco LOST 6% of its population because tiny homes start at millions plus. No front yard often included. Still, has to be a mainlander who moved to Hawaii and brought the fish passion with them and wants to show them off. But,not finding that! as per topic.

    Help! Massive algae growth

That's my advice for a planted tank. The plants take out the majority of what you don't want. After that I did say maybe 20% once a month is enough. In Co2 tanks everything is growing so fast that you need to make those big water changes and also fertilize right after that. It's why high tech...
