    Unpopular Opinions (fish related)

It looks like Rachel O'leary has tired of Youtubing. She had some accident but it was minor and has shown no new content in months. Corvis Oscen has gone from showing plants to just talking about them. Not into that. His veiws is not what it used to be. Some others have done the "I'm moving"...

    Marble Queen does color.

Not big in aquariums. It also can be grown emergent in a pond being its part native to the USA south. Never seen any aquascaper or Tropica do a vid on them.

    Marble Queen does color.

For over two years it hardly grew..didn't die though. Since using iron almost every day? Hey,it's looking good. It has this almost level ring of foliage and the newest leaf has red in it. Iron and red go together once again. There are few photos of this plant on the internet and none on youtube...

    Thoughts on black skirt tetras

Its not brought up often enough that Tetras kill each other off. Like Tiger Barbs but more subtle with Tetras. Every group of six or so has top fish taking out the others slowly over time. I had big beautiful Bleeding Heart tets do that and then the final huge 2 year old died from some unknown...

    rotala not doing well

Iron everyday until you get results..then to the 2-3 times a week. Try to dose round midday when the plants take it up much better. Java and Trident ferns eat potassium. You can make them turn from shabby to lush with potassium, and speed up growth a bit- but they are still slow.

Go by the bottle or about 1/2 teaspoon a day then when it gets to where you want to be make it 2-3 times a week. SHAKE the bottle!

Ti plant,Cordyline fruticosa. The climate has been compared to Albany or maybe Melbourne down Oz way, and Lisbon in Europe.

    Anti thread resurrection idea

Some sites just close the topic with "there will be no more responses" or something like that. People sometimes discover a site by some old thread on google. Yet,it could be to a closed topic and that would be ok to me. Most of the time the OP has already left the hobby and the country!

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Lots- 8 big Bozey rainbows..then the size of fish drops for Panda garas, Clown Loaches and assorted others. House plant ferts really are all wrong for aquarium plants. Just stick to iron like I should have done.

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Ok, NEVER use a houseplant fertilizer in your aquarium. I tried a Miracle Grow stick of fertilizer and BGA has reared its ugly head. So just clean and wait for that to subside. Again- never a terrestrial plant fertilizer!

Dose with iron. Seachems is fine and easy to get. You should see an improvement in 3-7 days.

    Moss

Taxiphyllum alternans. So far reminds me of little pine trees. MD on Youtube uses it a lot and I can see why he does not keep java moss. Java moss can become just a filter inlet clogger!

    Moss

I have it growing tightly to wood....but thats my newest return of java moss. It for me has grown well..then died back...grows well or very well and fast and then dies back for whatever reason. I'm trying Taiwan Moss since near 2 weeks now, and it for sure is a bigger, coarser, moss, dark green...

Peroxide dipping plants, does it kill off bad diseases?

I think the dip in potassium permanganate is the best idea. It's for sure a fish pathogen killer and should not harm plants.
  23. S

    Moss

Most likely Java moss. It's not usually sold on metal- that's more for the rarer more premium mosses. But to my eye,its Java Moss. I would peel it off the metal and glue it to wood or a rock. The metal is like the equivalent of rockwool for plants, something they come in but not used in the aquarium.

Can dogs be vegetarian (split from thread "Feeding cichlids and other fish meat")

I read years ago that Dogs and Cats never get "cholesterol" They can eat fatty meat every day and never get a heart attack later in life. Maybe true or urban legend?

Peroxide dipping plants, does it kill off bad diseases?

Peroxide is not to be played with. It will kill cyanobacteria..and then simultaneously kill your Java moss. I've dipped Anubias in pure peroxide I took OUT of the aquarium and that melted a couple of leaves, and didn't kill the thickest growths of BBA. You have a leaf in bad shape ? Just prune it...

Albino is a catchall for melanistic fish. He might not have the pink eye of a 100% albino fish.

I see it clear as can be. Albino blue cat. Nice. Not especially large and would look great in somebody's koi pond!

If you aim for 0 nitrates, what do you feed your plants?

The iron didn't kill the moss. Could have been the tablets. Were they for aquariums or houseplants? Chelated iron in liquid form works for me. Steven F. uses a pellet iron that also sounds good. I need to order that. I mean of the 16 nutrients and spices Tom Barr says all water plants need ( a...

If you aim for 0 nitrates, what do you feed your plants?

Two cents from me. Iron. Its the only must have IMO. If you have iron,so many other problems go away. I think the chelation also works to allow other nutrients to become available in the water to the plants. Just an observation.

    Dissolved oxygen levels

ADA makes a machine that adds pure oxygen to the aquarium. All I can say for sure is, my tank water became clearer when I added an air pump into the vortex of a power head. More aeration= better more efficient bacteria in the filter.

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Thanks!...Yes Bolbitis and to the right Alternanthera. Not perfectly grown, but doing ok. I think my habit of feeding my fish heavily is the algae's best friend. But at least I've turned a corner on getting those two to look pretty good in low tech. Lots of iron helps.

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Todays Ozelot growth photo. How big can they get? It already is the largest Sword i've ever grown. Its a great centerpiece no doubt about that. Lots of iron and lighting will do this to an Ozelot red. So big I accidently cut out of the picture the tip of the leaf!

    Is this blue green algae

That's probably not BGA. Its the usual green algae and any Ancistrus in town could take care of it. Or add more plants to out compete the algae, or less light and then flip the stones up side down for instant clean.

    Seachem products.

An update. I've been using a home garden iron (EPTA) with zinc) and the results show much more on plants that root into the substrate than those who are epiphytes. In fact, go down an inch into the substrate and you see a layer of iron has set in! Swords are out of their minds happy, mosses are...

Thought on my new riparian plants

If the plants are growing hygro? Then I HIGHLY recommend you add Seachem Iron. It will make a huge difference in the speed of growth and health of the Monstera and the Calathea. Once you see the difference? You will make the Seachem a must really.

Pumping atmospheric air into the plant aquarium.

What is the final word on that with non Co2 aquariums? I use an air pump that feeds into the vortex of a powerhead and that returns close to the out flow of the big mag drive pump of the inside filter so blasts those bubbles across the top of the 240 gallon. I don't have scientific Co2 measuring...
