    Rainbowfish and fish TB

A roll of the dice. My M.parva have been going strong. New Guinea followed a pattern of thrive for a year, then die. I give up on them.

    Rainbowfish and fish TB

Something gets Rainbows that is not talked about on the net-THIS is a great topic. I've seen them do the loss of appetite, the open mouth..dead. Or,the loss of appetite and swim much like those bass artificial lures meant to look like a very sick fish. Except for M.boesemani. Its a rock and mine...

    Rainbowfish and fish TB

I've got 8 large M. boesemani in the 240 and none have ever been sick. I lost a NOID female the other day from that disease where they waste away and she also swam vertically her balance was so far off. Antibiotics didn't do a thing to help. I do have a female M.lacustris when the other a large...

Light to medium planted gravel tank, do i vacuum the gravel?

UNLESS.you've got a carpet going to the front glass. Then,I would strongly advise any aquascaper to try and cover that with attractive molding for example,at the least black tape. That front glass area is like the last refuge of BGA. I see it in even the best scapers work. Cutting off the light...

Light to medium planted gravel tank, do i vacuum the gravel?

Unless you are using an undergravel filter in these days,no need to vacuum the gravel. What I do is stir up the soil line and under along the front glass. Making that look clean is all you need. The mulm is good for plant roots in the rest of the aquarium.

    Mother Fern hybrid- growing underwater?

As I truly thought- it lasted but did not grow but for the tiny croziers. It slowly rotted. As it did soften and rot my Roseline barb took to eating those pieces. So,no waste. I see that Aspleniums that grow rhizomes are the ones to test. Not crownferns.

    Moss

To follow up? I think this might be the best moss to grow. Its faster than Java, and it does not seem to fall apart as Java likes to do. I've already taken cuttings and those are growing very well, the original clump has covered the wood..albeit not a large piece, with lush dark green moss. Some...

Amazon Sword "Red Ozelot" the perfect low tech plant?

Great sword plant. Mine has just been awakened by the iron too- the all green bleheri has sent up a few leaves living up to the sword name. You hardly see it in the old photos when right now its sticking up past the Ozelot loud and clear. Using the cheap Home Depot iron ( with zinc and yucca...

Amazon Sword "Red Ozelot" the perfect low tech plant?

Thats what I forgot to mention, the leaf sizes. The Ozelot is about 12" tall with 8" leaves,3" wide and the rest is 4" of stem. So,its leafy and more colorful with growth. They love the iron.

Amazon Sword "Red Ozelot" the perfect low tech plant?

Well, along the way the Marble Queen became active!..for the first time in the years I've had it,it's growing large leaves, with marbling. I'm sure it would be yellow and green under high lights and Co2. The Sword plants seem to be ignored by scapers and that's a shame. They come in colors and...

    House Plants in Aquariums

I would strongly recommend you add iron to the water. I promise you will see the difference in your houseplants in water because it makes a huge difference in the aquarium plants also.

    House Plants in Aquariums

Another plant is the money tree Pachira aquatica. As by that last name it likes its root in water. Ficus..especially if you can get one to grow water roots..then you are in like Flynn. It also depends on how much light you give these plants. A small window might not be enough..or you have a...

Possible job and a new species of rainbowfish

I was wondering why the New Guinee Reds would do fine for a year or two..then stop eating. Nobody ever told me a thing about TB as a Rainbow scourge. I agree that M.boesemani is like a tank and the ultimate rainbow because of color and hardiness. Everything non M.boesemani is on the 2-3 year...

    Sand

Its not catfish need sand- at all. The Corydoras are just happier in the finer the sand the better. What I had was some kind of powdery sand. The Corys loved it and looked like excavators pumping the silt through the gills looking for worms and food. Even Cory cat lovers on the net? Never seem...

    Sand

There is a reason that the top of the line substrates sold for aquariums are small gravel sized. That's just the best size there is for plant roots. Now,if you can get a large grained sand- that works well also. Neither pack down hard. It's the play sands and pool sands that can be too small...

Keeping a terrarium for your aquarium plants.

For sure you need a lid. I have a pane of glass over the Metaframe. Lids on the jars. I came very close to losing a C.petchi dwarf because a Roselline barb would nibble any new growth. 2 weeks in a jar and I see new larger eaves for the first time. Some plants take our winters..like most of...

Keeping a terrarium for your aquarium plants.

I've gotten where if I'm not sure a plant I wanted and bought will survive? I take a few small cuttings or strands in the case of moss and put them in jars or my 2 gallon metaframe. Sure enough two species of plants that died in my 240,are now back with my better skills a second time around and...

Don't be fooled by the beauty of the Red Tail Shark. You'll regret it.

Who posted that in their natural habitat they are never found in groups and they prefer clear streams of gravel and rocks and shallow waters..Hence they adapt to aquariums but for being on the gruff side-ha.

Don't be fooled by the beauty of the Red Tail Shark. You'll regret it.

They are ALWAYS active doing something. They also have no real fin biting power..just chase. So,if with the right tank mates they are great fish. So you need to look for bigger peaceful fish along the lines of Red Hooks, large Tinfoil Barbs,or medium sized cichlids that are on the let live...

How do I get rid of wall algae?

Try an old credit card. I use one to scrape off algae AND mineral scum on a Goldfish aquarium I keep outdoors. Works on the hardest algae I find. Glass or Acrylic-does both.

    Are these rocks safe?

They look like granite..should be fine. If you rub a finger on found rocks and it gives off some color when wet? Probably some kind of sandstone. Those are iffy.

    Black beard Algae help!!!!

Hydrogen peroxide. But,then it grows back eventually. I live with it and find it easier to rid a tank of BGA then BBA. One thing I noticed is that BBA grows best under a cool light setting. Unpopular Opinions (fish related)

Monster fish vids or just keeping get dull fast when they are kept in aquariums of less than a 1,000 gallons. Even then, the fish are about as long as the tank is wide. Then, you have the people with 5,000 gallon tanks..and NO decor..just bare tank. No fun. Also..why do people want Pacu? They...

Don't be fooled by the beauty of the Red Tail Shark. You'll regret it.

I've had a few and they were great looking fish, jet black body, fiery red fins and the elegant white tipped dorsal fin. ALL comes in a 4- 6" body that will spend every waking moment chasing all other fish around. It's the same bluff as they don't do damage..they just wear some fish down to an...

    Unknown fluffy moss.

No algae.,its all moss. But it was growing on dead sphag in the jar and thats what it rooted on to. Now I have it on a rock that you cant see anymore. I'm curious to see how it grows in the near future. I also have "Taiwan Moss" and can tell you its a great moss. Dark glossy green and large...

    Unknown fluffy moss.

Is this Christmas moss? I had some that I tossed into a jar with Sphagnum moss also last fall. Could it be that going aquatic? It has black wiry stems and this almost hair algae like fine texture. Is it Java moss? Maybe somehow THAT was also a hitcher into the jar.

    Question about posting vids..

Try Vimeo next. I set up the 240 in May of 2018 and its taken quite a few losses in fish and plants and even now as well balanced as it is,I lose a fish on occasion or a plant gets picked to death or like Tiger Lotus, goes from thrive to dive and dead. Yet,four years later its looking lush...

I went with daily motion. Soon to post the water plants I have swaying back and forth in the current. I dont think I've seen one vid like it. Everything in "natural" style tanks is to be perfectly still. Not mine..it looks alive with Crypts and Hygrophila swaying away. Anubias elbowing old...

Depends on the bar you set . For just live? Swords are it. For grow and look Kingly? Yes,it takes more light and feeding and maybe room although a huge sword in the center of a meer 30 gallon looks great. One fact since the Ozelot hit it big? Fish like to hide under its leaves...Loaches especially.

    Cyanobacteria.

Interesting trivia for plant people: Cyanobacteria live in the Gunnera plant. That's the giant leaved primitive plant that goes back to the dinosaurs, and is in the Rhubarb family that has also naturalized in the UK.
