    Styrofoam IN the tank

Is it grey through and through? Won't look good if it flecks white. Also,it will decay eventually. The owner of Ocean City aquarium shop said that the floating Styrofoam islands he makes for plants to grow out of the aquariums breakdown and he has to make new ones.

What’s growing on my Java moss?

I can see the mono line used to tie down the moss. Maybe the white stuff is super glue also used to hold the moss? But the goes away I can't explain.

Bring Back the rotating spray bars..and bring back 1986 too...

I liked those..looked professional on DSL filter rolls. Gave a nice even wall of water. Why did that go away?

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Just to report that I am now growing Hydrocotyle tripartita. My first attempt went down a gullet of something. Well,I did have a Roseline die months ago and I suspect it was the eater. The larger surviving Roseline hasn't touched that delicate new plant. Makes a great contrast to large leafed...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

I just read someoplace Colin that one sign of Rainbow TB is the fish swims vertical. That's what my NOID female did for 2 months before passing. So far all my M. bozemanii have thrived with none being lost to TB or any other disease in three years plus now.

Wink in 1967 predicts the future- and gets it right!

Its fascinating how accurate they were to portray PC's as being all involved in life matters. Flat screen giant TV's are also in there. I guess if you lived in the "Wonder Years" of 1965-1970,this hits home a little more.

Wink Martindale in this film. Check out how well they did about what "1999" would be like.

Microbubbles cause swollen bladders and stomachs?

Dan said "The fish don't just have fine bubbles on them, they are GIVING THEM OFF, as they are saturated". I think its a problem of constant bubbles more then for a water change.

Microbubbles cause swollen bladders and stomachs?

Saw a vid about Dansfish.com and his huge commercial tropical fish business and he mentions losing fish to microbubbles until installing bleeder valves to vent then out. I wonder if aquarist who use vortexes and air pumps to a high degree lose fish that way? I see where Florida fishrescuse...

Plant fertilizer in tank without fish

How funny-I have the same Crypt parva in the same size bottle!..my fish were eating it,so now its in a bottle. Slow grower, but dark green and slowly growing.

    Energy Prices and Winter

I read the biggest savings you can do is turn down the heat on the hot water heater. As far as aquariums? Go with fish that can take colder water temperatures like White Clouds,Paradise Fish,Danios,Goldfish of course and plenty of others. I save by unplugging the heater on the 240 gallon in...

Plant fertilizer in tank without fish

NEVER use houseplant fertilizer for aquarium plants- its food for cyano. On the other hand,if she is growing them in a terrarium..a small dose of land fertilizer could help. When it comes to aquariums? All you really need is iron chelated. It does wonders in fact for low tech plants in gravel or...

    Sand

Pool sand is the whitest I believe. Play sand packs down when wet like at the beach(around here) and can't say about all purpose. Some say sand for sand blasting is best of all. All depends on location I think.

    The "Swim Bladder" disease problem

Interesting thar after all these decades- no cure for distended stomachs unless it's as simple as an egg bound female. If it's the swim bladder,no cure at all. Fish medicine seems to be behind in advancement.

Blake on youtube just put out a new vid on this topic. Check it out.

This is the stuff that annoys me about this hobby

As bad as these are? At least I see young aquarists on youtube far ahead of what my generation were on fish knowledge and care and about the habitats and equipment needed. I've learned more in the last 4 years about plants and keeping them than I had in the previous 45 years or so. The internet...

Anybody try mealworms for your fish?

I was at the animal feed store and saw a pound of dead mealworms in a package for only $10. If chopped up would they be a good fish food? Or too oily and hard?

    Pond lilies in aquariums

Forgot to mention is that the tropical plants offer ruffled and colorful pads...not seen on temperate Lilies.

    Pond lilies in aquariums

You would be best to order tropical lilies since temperate types would need to go dormant all winter. I've seen it done on good LED lighting, long hours like 12-14 a day. Bloomed in purple. IF the Lily is the focus and (hardy tropicals) fish just in second, make sure you fertilize the plants for...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

One thing about large paddle leaves? Especially with some color? They seem like some kind of sea creature like an anemone or even Kelp like when you contrast them with small foliage. I since the photos added H. tripartita next to Marble Queen's big leaves and it makes a good look. Aquascapers...

    Platinum Barramundi

I've seen variegated Barramundi on youtube, colorful with orange and red and black. Koi -ish. The best tankmates for a large Barramundi would be tiny 1-2" fish in schools. Big predators don't bother to eat them. Saw an Arowana tank full of tetras..those 2' + fish just ignored them.

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Thank you Willis..those Rainbows are very good at eating! This is as close as I can do..the room is only 10 x 10' and a dresser and large potted plant is opposite the big aquarium. As always I wish I had a better camera to take indoor low light photos... Double click for full tank!

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

A few sunbathed update pics. Taiwan moss is the BEST moss I have ever tried- buy it,and enjoy moss growth like the youtubers get. Its upper right in the first photo...and I have smaller growth here and there that were snipped off already from the original clump- it grows FAST. The Swords like...

    The "Swim Bladder" disease problem

Thats been the main killer of my fish the last two years. Like you said, treatment went nowhere. Maybe what's needed is a way to euthanize fish instantly while not giving yourself PTSD. External diseases are easy to cure. What happens inside is the polar opposite to cure. Always fatal and...

    Nymphoides Hydrophylla Taiwan

Funny that Blake on youtube just said "Stay away from plants fish will pick at" I know how true that is. Some plants seem to always have something that will eat it even if the reputation is they are not plant eaters...as you found out.

    Ich problems

If all you have is a small hang on back filter? Its not enough. Get a larger one or use another to make two. Just warm the water and treat with that RID X by Kordon.
  35. S

    Ich problems

Ich is not hard to cure IF caught early. Raise temps- siphon the water as Ich eggs sink to the bottom, and try a RID-X blue dye treatment. Worked well for me 2 years ago on non quarantined fish that infected my regulars.

    Crypt ID

Whatever it is- dose Iron. That takes all the sit and not grow right out of all Crypts. My C.balansae just is rampant. Before Iron,it was very slow. Now? It even cracked the ceramic planter I need to keep it from taking over the whole aquarium. Strong rooter.

Does this tank look too overcrowded with stuff???

100% the unlucky bamboo will rot. Even half submerged is too much. Maybe in a greenhouse half would do well. In your aquarium the light would only be good for few weeks or months before it grew past it..then yer stuck. The Lucky bamboo thing really has to be stopped being foisted on people...

Don't be fooled by the beauty of the Red Tail Shark. You'll regret it.

They look great with Clown Loaches in a large aquarium. But it was a very large aquarium and had 14" Tinfoil barbs with red fins..all that color. But what worked in that big tank turns into a chase a thon in 4' or less aquariums and newbys are fooled seeing how small they are for sale not...

    Unpopular Opinions (fish related)

Iwagumi? Reminds me of Easter Island. I really don't see the reason to spend thousands for an aquarium with just a large rock and a groundcover. Why not just make a terrarium the same for $$$$ less? No fish to even bother with.

    Rainbowfish and fish TB

For Rainbows, you might need a UV light. The only way to be worry free. I saw one on ebay new for $150 to handle 200 gallons or so. These days diseases from the breeder or wholesaler are much more common for many fish with Rainbows being particularly prone seems to me. Oscars are fine as usual.
