Wouldn't it be fun to have cheeseburgers float by? French fries?...just wait around and then catch a bite of them. Free too!

Why is my Tetra Glofish so huge compared to the others.

I think it has an internal parasite or possible swim bladder issue. If it swims fine and upright than I would bet on parasite. I don't know what you do to treat that..usually its fatal that advanced.

Iron does for low tech what Co2 does for high tech.

Thats it. Iron with zinc in a blue gallon bottle. Safe in small doses. Everything in moderation.

Angels in the wild I read eat a lot of drowned floating insects. I think that's why they take to floating flakes and the rest so easily. I can't get Roseline barbs to even make one dash to the surface!

Iron does for low tech what Co2 does for high tech.

That's bad news. I have about a half gallon left too. It lasts a long time. I did notice one HD didnt have it- but the other did locally. It works great, fish are fine. I need to get to HD.no.2 and see if they have more.

    Unpopular Opinions (fish related)

You havent reached fish nirvana if you are constantly tearing down tanks or constantly moving fish around. Only if you are always adding new fish is that ok- as in your expanding fishroom. But,not letting fish community's knit and no calm settling and with stress on the fish from net chases and...

Iron does for low tech what Co2 does for high tech.

Remember the KEY is to do it EVERY 2-3 days. Not once a week. Also, you will see results pretty fast...but the better you keep to the schedule, the even better results you will get. It really doesn't take much in amounts...just you have to be the human doser, unless you have a doser. :) :fish:

Iron does for low tech what Co2 does for high tech.

Liquinox chelated iron. NOT the other brand they sell that is a red liquid iron. Plus the red costs twice as much...what you want is the $11 a gallon liquinox in the blue container. Interesting that I added magnesium salts to treat a fungal issue..and not only cured the fish but made the Java...

Keeping the low profile in an aquascaping tank.

Depends on the fauna. If you are going nano fish in the 80 gallon,a good canister filter will do. Get one with built in heater and then you only have to hang the inlet and outlet pipes..nothing else to see. If you are going Co2 they make them able to be fitted to to the canister outlet..so...

Whats the stupidest/most useless fish related thing you have bought.

About 20 years ago,Fluvals original canister filter. Total waste of money as it would stop working for no reason, and the seals would leak all the time. The pump was kind of weak.

What's the coolest and/or most useful aquarium related thing(s) you have bought.

A large stick? ha. Actually that's true for me too. I taped a toothbrush to one for leaf and algae removal and a small net to another to net up the gunk. The "sticks" are from palm tree leaf stems. Like bamboo.

What's the coolest and/or most useful aquarium related thing(s) you have bought.

A bigger pump over a year ago. Now,can't blame lack of flow anymore and wish for a large pump. Oversized filters and pumps is a rare thing in the hobby.

    Need help with planted tank

I think your plants are starving to death plus, the water quality looks bad. Looks "new tank syndrome" all over it. What you need is to add liquid iron and probably a few bunches of stem plants to get that water quality issues overcome. The sword plants are HUGE iron hogs. Grow like weeds with it.

    Discus friend

He looks healthy. If you add a second hope thats its the opposite sex because a dominant male will stress the new comer as is usual with Discus. A group solves the problem...but so does a happy pair kept to themselves.

Is there a coldwater algae eater that anyone could recommend?

In the UK aren't there native fish with rubbery lips that suck on rocks? Loach like fish? I've seen video's but can't recall the name. Google photos and a few came right up.

How do you dry out used tank sand to save it for reuse?

I missed this one..but,store in anything uncovered indoors in a garage, shed or in the house and it will go bone dry sooner or a bit later.

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

The full tank. The reason its not in "planted tank journals" is it never was going to be one!..ugh,did I go plant crazy or what? That's all Java fern to the right and a mix of trident, bolbitis, crypts and Hygrophila angustifolia to the left. Notice the plants with color are centered. THAT is...

Time to toss out the cuttings and extra plants ...

LFS has no need and I'm reminded of Covis Oscin on youtube feeding his chickens a pile of red Ludwigia and lots of Rotala cuttings. You might have paid for them but there comes a time you just have to toss them out into the compost. Fish need room too!

Quote That's it ,Back in the fold. I keep telling myself maybe I should make a water change...but its fine. Clean the filter is about all I do now. Originally it was going to be a fish only setup....THEN i added some plants and then the bug bit me.

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

How many backyard ponds planted up never get a water change? Just rain or hose water to keep it filled. All I do extra is add the iron for the plants.

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

To think- you can skip all that if your water is filtered by 8' of solid plant growth including the rootage of a huge Syngonium vine that is in active growth all year. I also constantly prune it too. I have no "tint" to the water even with a white background. "I see the light" on natural growth...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Just to report I havent made a water change since the end of July/start of August-I should have wrote it down, and this might be the longest I've ever gone. Aquarium and fish look fine..algae is way down. Not even needed to wipe the glass down. So what's the motivation to change water, right? I...

    Apistogramma cacatuoides fry!!!

When I said small fry I didn't mean helpless swimming eggs...I was thinking 1/4 to half inch- when they look like miniature fish. With the huge demand for Apistos I would think LFS is willing to take them in smaller to much smaller than usual and raise them out. Possible.
  32. S

    Apistogramma cacatuoides fry!!!

Raise them as long as you can and see if the LFS would take small fry and give some credit. What you have is in high demand and they might agree to take them so small.

    Apistogramma cacatuoides fry!!!

Congrats!,those are not easy to keep. They feed so slow and are secretive to the point getting the food to them is not easy in a mixed tank. Better a smaller aquarium and slow tankmates. I imagine the cichlid fry would do well on frozen baby brine shrimp and crushed Tetramin. Good luck.

Photos to frighten your partners with - Gary's fishroom.

I had a 9 x4' liner pool about 16" deep in my old outdoor fish room. Was not heated but I could keep tropicals in it April- November easy. It was above ground and cool to see Tinfoil Barbs and Red Hooks in it along with Goldfish and Koi. Just a few,no big collection. It took up about half the room.

    Liquid fertilizer and dirt substrate

For the OP? and that small aquarium? Drops every day should be more than enough in iron or fertilizers. You would be surprised how far those doses go and yet can be a big difference in quality plant growth..

Photos to frighten your partners with - Gary's fishroom.

Your just starting!..soon old bathtubs, indoor kiddie pools, even liners from porcelain freezers..just anything that holds water that isnt a fish tank is put to use. No Martha Stewart set-up approved. Good old days,no regrets.

    Liquid fertilizer and dirt substrate

To give you an idea how well iron works,I use about a tablespoon every other day on the 240 gallon. I would say one and a half TS at most per 250 gallons seems to be a good ratio. The key is do it religiously every other day, or everyday half a tablespoon I suppose.

Decades ago,I had an uncle electrician install multiple outlets. I never hear hobby guys say they had an electrician do the same thing. Liquid fertilizer and dirt substrate

Since the plants have filled in,I only make a small 20% or so change about every six weeks? To tell you the truth,I wonder if I should even do that? My tap water is very soft- 0. So minerals and what have you don't build up with all the plant growth. This is with a 4 year old established tank...

    Liquid fertilizer and dirt substrate

Everything in moderation as pop used to say. I can tell you I never got results until I started dosing with iron. Such a small amount for a big aquarium gets lush growth. The lighting is the same as when I struggled! I only added iron- and the cheap liquid iron from Home Depot in the blue...
