    Lump on minnow body

Also- I remember it being something that grew larger after the fish ate. In my case they were young Giant Danios. Both female and after removing they died soon after. I would guess by the fact they grew rounder after a meal should have told me something but i've never had a fish look like that...

    Lump on minnow body

I've seen that and it IS infectious. I can't say if its a virus or worm..but if you leave that fish in there- other fish will look like that soon. Best to remove and put it down. Or.spend bucks and try something chemical. Maybe Ivermectin!

A good vid on all that can and will go wrong for reef keepers.

I've dealt with all this back in the 1995-2005 and then stopped with the die offs, the melts, and the adding of more and more equipment. That whole thing where a reef is thriving..then diving? Too much headache. All those great Xenia's melting overnight...Caulerpa bleaching overnight. Yes the...

Also, OFR is keeping a huge puffer in a 190 gallon. TOO SMALL. That fish needs thousands of gallons. They should never mind "the4 albino" tank and put that puffer in at least the two thousand gallon. I've seen them in huge public aquaria with large African fish..and others of their own kind...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Two anubias in bloom at the same time. I read that they CAN be fertile making seed submerged. Can't say if its true or not. Anubias like a good flow even if they can also do fine with almost none as in a typical Co2 aquarium. Shoot..the photo is too small. Tomorrow try again.

Ohio fish rescue put two 10" albino Tinfoil Barbs in an aquarium with an at least 24" Albino Redtail cat. He's going to eat those Barbs and soon. Plus I THINK they are hinting to the guy who has kept a dozen or more Stingrays with them for months to come and get them. They placed them with Pacu...

After posting that, I saw it was time to clean my filter..and that takes about 15 gallons of bucket water and that 15-20 gallons is near black tea in looks. Plus hauling the buckets to poured into a can outside.. Proof that you just have to get down and dirty sometimes even with the best...

Oh I know its done. Its basically a branch of aquarium coral keeping on to its own. People into that are fast talkers into RedBull- ha..kidding. But you need to keep up on all things to ensure the very high quality water. Corals wont do a thing as frags if water isnt up to snuff. Its just...

Long Island Aquarium resets its 20,000 gallon reef.

Ok,I increased the size of the print. That should make the difference with no dropped letters. My big TV went out and so I use one about half the size to post and read. I'm going to miss that big old (2007) Samsung.

That's another phase of the hobby- frags to trade or sell. Those aquariums are not for a community reef tank. Its colorful. But the constant coming and going wheeling and dealing is not for me thats all.

Fish that are possibly affected by constant dosing of macro and trace fertilizers.

.From the time I started with iron over 2 years ago and then added potassium...problems started with certain fish. I don't know if you have had the same problem? So far I would name Angelfish and Roseline barbs and even some large Bleeding Heart Tetras began having problems. Other fish that died...

Long Island Aquarium resets its 20,000 gallon reef.

I really have cut down on the iron and potassium in the planted Rainbowfish aquarium. The plants look fine. But I have noticed over the years now, that some fish get afflicted with some kind of illness that causes them to lose their balance- to the point they swim sideways..then die after a day...

Long Island Aquarium resets its 20,000 gallon reef.

Its not the he's wrong..my point is. the fun is gone if your tank is just set to only need the same normal maintenance and ever a curator gets itchy to start new! Its going to quite a awhile before that looks established.

Long Island Aquarium resets its 20,000 gallon reef.

Wait until my next plant post- I think now that constant dosing of plant aquariums is bad for the fish. Great for plants..but shortens fish life. Fun!

Long Island Aquarium resets its 20,000 gallon reef.

"Picking" ? I use 50 years of fish keeping for newbys to learn from and the vids help explain why I say what I say. Second- you are not even on topic. This isnt somebody's home,Its a public aquarium! The problem with almost all aquarium boards is,nobody ever wants to be serious. Its like keep it...

Discus are an endless money pit!

The largest Discus I have seen were wild fish and no kidding, they had to have been at least 10" and almost perfect round. That was decades ago. I remember being in awe and telling the LFS owner that I never knew they could get so large. They also were not especially thick or colorful- just...

Long Island Aquarium resets its 20,000 gallon reef.

I watched..still not sure why the original reef was torn apart. We all know..those pests will return from new rocks added. More or less. it was one of the nicest reefs on the planet- only those reefs done outdoors in tropical climates were more real. Now,what do I think? I think the owner just...

Discus are an endless money pit!

Chances are they won't last more than two years. With Discus too? You get the pecking order and in small groups in home aquariums? that is lethal to the slower growers. It's why breeder go to only one pair per aquarium. If two pair or more were better? Then they would do that! Money is the...

Discus are an endless money pit!

I AGREE. I don't think I said they never grow. I said I have raised them from the size of a quarter american,to breeding size and they soon after a few spawnings became sick and died. I think I gave up since it had happened the same way once before and this was my best shot, a 100 gallon for...

Flowerhorns are Hideous and painful too look at. That they will kill any fish in with them makes having one as kind of useless- No plants either. I also will add that its pitiful that even the best and most colorful seem to always be kept in bare tanks. Like a stuffed toy on a shelf.. My other...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Well, more of less is more. I removed a 35 watt or so LED shoplight. I think the longer days are enough on the long aquarium. So.its one 4' Yescom light on the left side and twin 4' fluorescent shop light on the right side. That adds up to 110 watts of lighting. Its enough with the window now...

House Plants as Supplemental Water Filters

It's not quite a miracle cure as some make it out to be. For one thing, you need to get the terrestrial part of the plant plenty of light and secondly- you need to feed that plant with iron. When you do start with iron- the change is amazing with much darker green growth and faster growth..THAT...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

I removed the 35 watt, 48" LED shop light from over the big tank. Days are long and sunny and so I grow my basically low light plants under a double fluorescent shop light to the right and the left has the Yescom 48" but 38 or 40 watt LED. oK.. I notice that famous monster fish keepers on youtube are posting vids of fish that are dying on them and the one thing I see that stands out? Those fish are not well fed. Sometimes you just don't mind if algae is on the glass, plants need trimming and the water level has gone down an inch. Why? Because when you do go over the aquarium and top it off..by the next day it looks like a million dollars. I know,it's naughty when these days people do have perfect...

Any temporary solution for getting rid of a really bad odor out of you water at least in time for a couple of water changes can get done?

OH yeah. One day its 1975 Disco and playing hoops all Saturday and then its..chronic pain,BP. I couldn't tell one new song on the radio. Only if the granddaughters like then I MIGHT hear it enough to know. Maybe. Carbon is for odors. Room freshners might poison the fish.

    Cyanobacteria.

Ben didn't mention if he had plants and plant lights- the brighter than normal lights- so I would think the easiest way to kill BGA for HIM,is too blackout the tank while going on "nutrient removal war" That means cleaning the prefilter and also very important since he has no plants- use those...

    Clown Loach growth rate?

Oh wow, great to hear. I thought I was the only one to remember that Braz Walker in the 60's pushed cooked oats for his fish. "Cloudys the water a bit,but it recovers" he would admit. Great for Leporinus,Anostomus,Pacu. Some cichlids. Other fish I would not have thought of as oat eaters. I would...

    Clown Loach growth rate?

KG do seem to top out at 6"...and then you see a mega one for sale. Its hard to feed them enough food to get big growth. They eat slow so other fish can get food faster. I wasn't sure if big KG were grown or wild.

    Clown Loach growth rate?

What's interesting about Clown Loaches from almost all other popular fish sold is that ability to get to a large size but it takes decades. I can't think of any other fish that reaches over 12" and takes that long to get there. It's why I asked. You might think you have stunted loaches because...
