Java Moss can thrive in any temperature.

It's never been told before..but these"tropical" mosses can take much less than a tropical climate. Worth a try this summer are other mosses....

Java Moss can thrive in any temperature.

In the dead of winter I threw some Java Moss into my 1950's style 2 gallon Metaframe tank OUTDOORS in shade. Today with 80% of the water evaporated I took a look..The moss was green and dense. No Co2 other than from mother earth. It's been growing in temps from the high 30's to the 70's. You...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

What keeps things fresh for you AND the fish? New driftwood, Cuttings from my Alternanthera rosaefolia rooted in a more open and closer to the front glass spot. All against conventional planted tank "rules". I want to see the red in dead center..along with the original off to the right group...

    Clown Loach growth rate?

My fantasy aquarium is the size of a large above ground pool. I could say 12x12..but since it's a fantasy I guess there is no real limit. But 12 x 12 x 4' deep? that's about 4,300 gallons. Big enough. S.A. Arowana,Clown Knifes and lots of Clown Loaches and PLANTS. No 2 version? RAINBOWS and...

    Unpopular Opinions (fish related)

Last month somebody said I had it in for Andrew Sandler and his million dollar home aquarium. No,I do not. What happened is that the first vid he put out that I saw? Couldn't even tell if he had real or fake corals. I watched his latest and oh,they are very real and his set up is equal to any...

Hey ! I saw my Panda Garra' spawning.

Yeah,I never got insulting- but they weren't so encumbered by politeness or open minds. To be specific, they claimed I was teaching bad, disproven aquatic methods. Photos in 2022 meant nothing to them. I even said "Low tech with low light plants..mostly low light." They didn't care. The cake...

Hey ! I saw my Panda Garra' spawning.

Thanks! Its the same tank that got me banned on three aquarium plant boards because I said dont change water, just small amounts when I clean the filter. I also have a strong pump that is in the aquarium at 1,200 gph and no real back pressure...the Panda's spend time in the early day letting...

    Clown Loach growth rate?

Just reading the posts makes me wish I had just bought in numbers Boesmans rainbows (8) and the loaches- more than just three. Both have that trouble free aura. I have not added fish...but a few other types of fish have died in the near four years and never bought any new fish. The result? What...

Hey ! I saw my Panda Garra' spawning.

True at almost two years in the 240 gallon there they were- spooning together on the back wall of the aquarium and shivering...then the female dashed into the Bolbitis out of view. The slam dunk was the Clown Loaches were excitedly eating something small and delicious.. That was repeated about...

The Shubunkin is doing very well...no fungus and the wound looks to be healing over. Some warm weather we are having should help. A success.

Wow- totally forgot about Meth blue. I don't think I've seen it for sale for years as itself. I did 2 years ago or so buy RID-X and it did dye the water blue so it's still used in some form. She's still up right and swims to the surface to feed. Goldfish don't ever give up.

    Clown Loach growth rate?

Clown Loaches are not exactly extroverts..but can come close to that. Other than active peaceful tankmates one way to relax them is with fake hollow logs or whatever looks like that.

Whatever it was made of has worked overnight. In the nick of time. She is a real fighter survivor. That white fungus mucous is much less. I saw Erythromycin...but then saw a different package and brand "Treats fungus" so went with that chemical. Doing the surgery is not a waste of time. You...

Walmart has the cheapo type that I buy up to 6' around for $20 or less. They last about three years at least. Just be careful not to put sharp things in them- like lava rocks. I almost bought one the other day to grow water lilies in...but I didn't.

I once treated a large Ohgon Koi female that had really bloated on one side. I bought those blue kiddie pools and just put in lots of magnesium salts. Overnight she expelled huge amounts of eggs. She was fine after that.

I put antibiotics in yesterday. Some white skin fungus..but not too bad. I used those clear plastic or whatever its made of gloves too and I did soak the blade in bleach, then rinsed before the surgery. Just make sure wherever you put the fish after surgery, add antibiotics right then. I ,as I...

What do you think of the soft plastic 1,000 gallon pond?

Interesting- why I posted. I know spiny fish and chewers are asking too much. Maybe time too.

You hit the nail on the head newbee. The way to make shy fish show? You keep active fish that are also totality safe with the loaches. The Clowns see that it's ok to be seen.

    Clown Loach growth rate?

They do that. Sometimes its so convincing i think it MIGHT be really dead...and then it scuttles away as I get close to the glass. I have three..and I might just stick with the trio- I would think it would make them grow faster and larger sooner. They are great pals..look out for each other and...

What do you think of the soft plastic 1,000 gallon pond?

Like i said,If i had the room? I would get one. $500...compare to an Acrylic 1,000. Those would run closer to $20,000. Cash. Sure the plastic windows are funky...but that much room and you have small fish so that the scale is like looking at a section of a small stream? Sounds good to me.

What do you think of the soft plastic 1,000 gallon pond?

I was asked to not post links. Only I had posted that link on TFF. I think mods deleted it. Anyways for $500,I think it's a great bargain. Except they come in two colors, ghastly orange and normal blue. Must UV resistant also. Look on Youtube for "My 1,000 gallon pool" I think it was.

Easiest way to remove Algae from aquarium glass and acrylic also.

I forgot I had done this topic! Also- NEVER put metal to acrylic. 2 days ago i was repairing the vacuum cleaner and it slipped out of my hand as I sat on a chair and fell and hit the 240 gallon front glass- 2 wicked looking scratches, one was red. I was able between uses 320 grit and 1000 grit...

The best Algae remover. Your Credit Card.

Literally. I've found that of all the algae scrubber sold and ones made up,a credit card works best. It will remove the toughest algae from acrylic. In fact,as you use the card? You can feel the hard bio load on the acrylic- yet you see nothing other than the gray smear and the green algaes...

What do you think of the soft plastic 1,000 gallon pond?

Its orange- not a good thing and why they made it that color is beyond my style. The clear plastic panels are not high clarity..but for what it is,I can understand that. Price dictates some tradeoffs. I wish I had the room. Real aquariums of a 1,000 gallons even used are thousands of dollars...

She's upright. I think she's feeling pain that some people say fish don't have. But if we surgery? Its like that with her..move to eat..but otherwise resting.

HERES ONE YOU WILL HATE!. ha. I think that bill to limit fish in the hobby? Is a good idea. I just watched a vid on Plecos and it wont be long before Yellow plecs,Royal- some with yellow stripes,Zebra and they also showed Pleco's I've never seen that reach 4' long. Not many in the wild...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

One more thing that's new to me. I have not replaced any fish that have passed or added any new fish. The smaller bioload shows to me. The filter goes longer between cleanings and water quality just goes up incrementally as less fish and less food goes in. Ironic that the fish in there are fed...

    Clown Loach growth rate?

Clown Loaches in a 400 gallon sounds great. My suggestions for tankmates in that? Tinfoil Barbs- the ones with red fins, black boarders and a gun metal silver body. Freshwater Archerfish,Rainbowfish, Red Tail Shark- or a few to spread out their kind of aggression. Gouramis. Danio's and related...

    Clown Loach growth rate?

75 gallons wont stunt them at all unless you keep it too crowded. That would be true for a 7,500 gallon aquarium if packed with fish. I saw Clown Loaches that size for $35 each. Mine are over the 4" mark and at that rate would be $75 dollar fish. Each. They really are great in every way,easy...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

They are their for the duration. I might go for more of the White Roseline barbs. Others no,just wait their turn. But-Roselines are not the hardy fish I thought they were. Caveat on them. The Bozys? One I swear,I think has reached an even 6". Could it one day be 7 or 8? Never heard of that..but...

That blurry orange spot was the tumor. I didn't realize the camera hadn't focused. Now,it's gone and she's lethargic but alive. If any infection starts I go to hydrogen peroxide.

I just removed a tumor from a Shubunkin yesterday. It was a grape sized tumor on a 8" fish including tail. Sharp razor, some vodka as anesthesia ( for the fish .not me- at least until later for me-wink),Hydrogen peroxide to pour on the wound when the tumor was removed. Shockingly- almost no...

    Anubias flowers opening underwater...

I used to complain that LED lights were so lacking in the purple that made plants and fish colors pop. It looks like they heard me and now I see that wonderful colorful LED aquarium lit up in purple again. I could never get why anybody in this hobby would settle for all the bland LED lights...
