Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Ok some changes ,more evolving with the big tank. I have no more stem plants. They needed too much pruning and what replaced them are slow growing masses of moss and Java fern and rosettes of various sword plants. If it sounds more like a Japanese Garden its because it does look like that. I...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

In 48 hours he went from hiding at a surface corner...his colors were pale to losing his balance and then dead. I have 8 other Bozys in there left,a trio of getting larger and larger Clown loaches, and a few other smaller fish. If it wasn't for a trio of Giant Danio's I might be overrun with baby...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

I feed them beef heart in gelatin, shrimp slightly cooked everyday and Tetramin color flake food morning and before the lights go out. If I remember I toss in extra cooked veggies we have. The flake food is just a pinch, the others all they can eat once a day. Its the first Bozy to die on me from...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

I lost my SECOND largest M. bozemanii today. It was an even 6". I have one male thats about 6 1/4 and deeper bodied. I don't have any idea why it died at over 4 years old. It showed pale colors yesterday and today was dead. Sort of ironic that in that big tank? One rainbow fry has survived to...

Taiwan Moss is best of them all.

Mark Davis of "MD fishtanks" on Youtube put me on to this moss. It is rampant when other mosses are losing ground. Its also dense. You prune to keep it at bay not to make any more thicker. Its all over my 240 and even as I lapsed on adding iron? It didn't care. No need for iron for this moss in a...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Thats about right. The aquarium has evolved in five years. Plants that get along thrive, plants that need special care are not part of the group any longer. Just iron is added. I've never had this kind of status quo in a plant tank before. Also the nine big Rainbows, three Clown Loaches, trio of...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

You know I set up this aquarium in May 2018. I have to admit,I don't want to spend any more than I have and the fish I have are all I intend to have. The Boesemani@5+ inches have reached full size. Only the Clown Loaches are still growing. So,why risk them with new fish and possible diseases...

    BBA problem

You might add iron and that might make the plants more resistant to the algae. Seachem for most people is best since you don't need very much for the average aquarium with a light load of fish. That aquarium looks nice,I wouldn't get too drastic on it. Tweaks.

    Chemicals for new aquarium

Epsom salts are a good safe additive..good for plants color and good for fish slime to ward off bacteria. The LFS owner told me decades ago he tosses in some to every tank and he always of course had fish coming and going.

    Retired and reviving 300-gallon tank

I have a 240 and went with boesemani Rainbows- half blue and half orange. Tend to be hardy and long lived. You could grow natural aquarium with plants and small fish- just that they have a tendency to die young compared to larger fish like the Rainbows. Altum Angels was my backup choice..they...

    Poorly golden barb

Dropsy and I don't know if there is a cure for that. Use epsom salts and go with an antibiotic that says treats that problem. Plus the usual raise water temps and make partial changes of water.

    Blue green slime survey

Without a doubt it's caused by too heavy a load+ high light. You have to reduce one or both. That's the only cure for good. Any other way-chemicals- will only last weeks at most. Although, once plants REALLY start to fill in? That reduces BGA to a nuisance. I suppose if I exchanged my group of...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Thanks backinthefold! With no Co2 and only the sun + normal LED and fluorescent lights, you never are going to get in that situation where you are constantly pruning. Java ferns,Anubias,Crypts ( some) are great for long term plans. I've never pruned Anubias- they get longer is all. Rules are...

Stan's freshwater 240 gallon extravaganza. Trials and tribulations of a sunlit aquarium

Its taken three years to grow a small cutting of Trident fern to about size of a basketball cut in half. Jacob's plants are not even in business anymore! In the photo with a orange male Bristle nosed catfish,Ancistrus. Well, folks my aquarium now looks more like a planted pond...small water...

How true. Mine has been steadily evolving for almost five years now. No tearing down going to happen or planned. Not when I wait for years for trident ferns, bolbitis and java fern to make clumps.

    Hardscaping rocks

If you put it underwater and then rub it with a finger and it makes a cloud? You don't want that rock. Exceptions might be limestone for fish that like that it can dissolve. Otherwise avoid fieldstones and the like.

Most 'scapes? Now look pretty much the same to me after more than five years of plant myopia. Looks to me some tear down their scapes only to make a new one just like the old one... and call it new content.

    Patience.

NICE Clown Loaches 2 tank man. How old are the largest ones? I find slow plants to be what I keep and the fast growers eventually get to be too much of a hassle. Pearlweed is one that is blazing fast. Can't be pruned often enough so out it went. I know,I never thought I would say I like that...

    quick question on Fuzz Algae

It looks ok. I would say the biggest problem was you had the lights on too long. 8 hours is plenty. Your plants look healthy to me. Easy green is mostly iron right?...its the other ingredients that might be a problem for right now.

    quick question on Fuzz Algae

Stop with the fertilizer and use iron instead- it wont fuel the algae growth. Adding algae eaters would help for that kind of algae. Green fur algae is what they are made to eat. Also- add more plants the more the better to fight algae. Using bunch plants and later the more slow growers is how...

Plants turning brown in new planted tank

A bleach dip might kill off the plants. Just leave them as is- they might not be showing growth above, while growing fine roots below. Try the iron,do not make huge water changes. That whole thing with big water changes works if you have Co2 and high intensity lighting to compensate for the loss...

Clown Loach Emergency - 16 yr tank sudden problems

I only have a trio that's three years old in my 240 gallon. I wont get more since they should each get to 6" or more eventually.
