Very high Nitrates even after major water changes

Perhaps faulty or expired nitrate test liquid?

    What possible fish illness

I've been using only outdoor tap water this winter so the water is too cold to use. I throw in a couple heaters with a powerhead into a bucket with new water and then boil some water on the stove, and throw that in, to up the temps. Has worked well.

Sometimes wonder where bladder snails come from...

I've had bladder snails and mystery snails, before I ever had nerite snails. But, the nerites I must give props to because they do the most to clean up aquaruim walls and decor that I've found. Nerite snails are larger then bladder snails so it makes sense they would intake more. Of course...

Help me fix up my aquarium

I never tried to introduce duckweed but it came with another plant I purchased I think so yeah, it grows like crazy now. You can get it to where other floaters take over better then the duckweed. I've not had any luck with red root floaters. They've hung around for a while but eventually all...

    worried about my fishes??

Darn it I thought I proof read it good enough to fix that too. Oh well. Need to started using the abbreviations. Going to fix in my post.

    worried about my fishes??

If you see nitrate then the tank is producing a healthy nitrogen cycle. Until the ammonia and nitrites go to zero and you've done a good water change to reduce nitrates after is when it would be safe to introduce fish. There should be zero ammonia and zero nitrates. Although, I've seen hardy...

    Weird cycle test results.

I've seen this when providing enough benificial bacteria to start with. IMO just means you have quickly established a cycled tank and the ammonia is being cycled to nitrates efficiently, so you never see nitrites.

Seeding new sponge filter without running HOB at the same time?

I've done the take filter sponge/media out of the HOB and put next to the sponge filter for a while method. Worked fine.

    Angelfish advice- bad tankmates

I've seen aggression issues with my angelfish in a 55 gallon community tank that has guppies, neon tetra, rummynose, glowfish tetra. Nothing terrible but was chasing other fish around alot so I went ahead and moved him out of the community tank to his own. There's another angelfish in the 55...

Returned from vacation, 2 aquairum fish dea and 1 sick.

Looks like a young gold dust lyretail molly. I've had several in my main tank but currently now only have two left. They are adults and very active swimmers. I'm not sure I see anything wrong with yours in the pics you provided. Are they acting weird, not eating? Here's a pic of my two mollys.

    Fish Constantly Dying

I keep mostly smaller fish like you. When I started my first tanks I used a HOB device with carbon filters and was changing them out on a schedule as per the product instructions. I eventually moved to changing them as needed because of the cost and come to think of it probably had some deaths...

Fine sand, adult Cory’s and small tanks… proving to be a challenge with power filtration

I ditched my HOB filters for air pump driven sponge filters on all my tanks, including my 55 gallon. I might occasionally put the HOB on with a carbon filter to clean up but that's rare.

Feeding Regimen for Cherry Shrimp (mostly) Tank

I purchased 5 red cherry shrimp for my 5 gallon tank about 6 to 8 months ago. They've since reproduced many times more. I don't know exact counts. But the numbers aren't extrodinary. I occassionly feed them blanched kale and unsalted green beans. They eat either up quickly.

My first saltwater tank - Aqueon Frameless Cube Aquarium, 3 Gallon

Yeah, I'm glad too. The last straw was when it topped of to almost the very top of the tank. I don't think any of the electronic ones are worth anything. Sucks b/c I need something larger to facilitate a mechanical one. I do use the electronic ones still to top off but only under supervision...

    Mystery snails

The bunch is called a clutch of eggs. I've had a few mystery snails but never had any breeding from them. I assume I just never had two diff sexes. I've seen a Twitch stream that had them and they reproduce exponentially!

My first saltwater tank - Aqueon Frameless Cube Aquarium, 3 Gallon

Also, just to note, I've had no luck with the electronic ATO sensors. I've tried two diff kinds. They always top off way too much and tend to reduce the salinity too much. I'm thinking this is more of an issue with smaller tanks, espcially one that like this that is only 3 gallons. So, I've been...

My first saltwater tank - Aqueon Frameless Cube Aquarium, 3 Gallon

I've had some issues with the zoas enlongating and not opening up that much. At first I thought it was light so I adjusted but that only produced a small reaction and reduction in stretching. I recently tried spot feeding them reef roids and that has made a bigger reduction in strectching.

Bubbler hose siphoned water flooding my living room.

Maybe the air hose line is too small for the coupling, making it pop-off? I have this prob on one of my airlines but it's because it's too short and the mischievous young cat I have messes with it. But the pump is above the tank and check valve so there's no issue other then the tank isn't...

Big shake up underway, and OMG those Panda Garra’s are tiny…

Oh, btw @WhistlingBadger, was wondering how you made that water stream. Looks like some sort of clear glass or plastic tubing at top. I might do that for my panda.

Big shake up underway, and OMG those Panda Garra’s are tiny…

Funny you say that, I recently added the 5 corys I have to the tank and my panda has been best buds with them since. I might get a few more as you suggest anyways though.

Rainbow film on the top of the water + I think I’m having nitrite issues?

How long have you had the tank running for? Has it been through the nitrogen cycle yet? It looks like it's going through a cycle now. Also, the pics you are taking, you need to move the light source so it's behind your body. The light needs to shine on the test tube. Since you have fish and...

    Best YouTube channels

I agree that MD has a limited knowlege on fish, he does have a good general knowlege of fish keeping and I like the aquascaping the videos created provided. Matt is great and I do agree he has him around because he has a deeper knowledge of fish keeping. One must always read many sources and...

    My frogbit is melting

I've recently have seen decaying (yellowing and spotting of leaves) on the one tank that I have that it has been thriving. I put this down to perhaps during cleaning I cut some of the root stems and also perhaps due to more mature frogit roots taking over others. This metlting you are seeing...

    New Nerite Snail Acclimation Time?

Nerite snails going out of the water and eating on surfaces that have stuff on them is normal. I see it all the time. They alway return to the water. I've had mystery snails leave and fall out on the ground only to be found dried up the next morning though.

6 fish died today, huge spike in ammonia and nitrites

Definitely suggest water changes until you reduce ammonio to zero. 50% daily should be fine without causing any issues.

6 fish died today, huge spike in ammonia and nitrites

Looks like something is casuing an ammonia spike for sure based on the test. But there's no nitrites (contrary to what you said in the OP) showing so I think the cycle is still working fine. There's maybe 20+ nitrates showing and zero nitrites. So, ammonia could be due to something that's dead...

Better on the fish, or the aquarium cycle, to feed at 1st light, or last light???

I work from home so so I'm able to feed around 1PM - 2PM or so once per day on all my tanks and pond. Unless it's a fry tank, then I feed them multiple times a day. I do think, unless the animal is nocturnal, that it should be fed while there is still light.
