If you dont plan on having any bottom fish like corydora, loaches RAms ect...then gravel is fine for plants. If at some point one wants bottom fish like the above mentioned then sand, which plants also will grow in. Also when one mixes the sand will fall between the gravel so no mix.

If you do with the flowerhorn in the 55 try and get a female as they dont get quite as big as the males. Also there are a few different strains of flowerhorn with some that get only around 8 inches.

While distilled water doesnt have chlorine in it still often has chloramine in it which is also harmful to fish. Be sure to use a dechlorinator with distilled water to get rid of chloramine.
