    Category of lighting

Depends on how big your tank is. Look at the lumens on it. General rule is 20-30 lumens/ liter for low light plants, 30-40 for medium and 50 and above for highlight plants. Also depends on the depth of the tank and the PAR @ substrate.

Anyone here has experience with bamboo shrimp?

They get pretty big a 10 gallon is probably too small. They are filter feeders, instead of picking food with their claws they have fans and open them up and catch particles floating in the water. Theyll usually be seen hanging out by the filter out flow trying to catch particles. They dont move...

Can you help me identify this fish?

One should also not mix goldfish(black moor) with tropical fish. Goldfish need much cooler water and are incredibly messy dirty fish. As for algae buying fish to control algae is rarely a good idea. Chinese algae eater dont eat much algae and will attack other fish. SAE will stop eating most...

Whats your favorite tetra and why?

I like cardinals but i dont like that they are more expensive than neons for basically a bit more red, and i dont like that they prefer their water warmer.

    New cichlid owner

I use calcium chloride and magnesium sulfate to raise my GH. One can also use calcium sulphate. Which is gypsum powder. Go to rotalabutterfly.com it has a dosing calculator if one wants to raise gh with dry ferts

    New cichlid owner

Rehoming the severum would be ideal. Check your LFS, most stores will take a severum if they can. Like i said though the cloudy water is most likely due to ammonia spike. When a tanks biological filter is either new or not up to speed the ammonia created from fish waste accumulates as the...

    New cichlid owner

Couple things. Cichlids are dirty fish. They eat alot and create a lot of waste and get big. Cat gish get big and are messy and plecos are big waste producers as well. Im guessing the cloudy water is due to ammonia or nitrate spikes due to all the waate created by these 3 fish. You havent said...

Stocking my 100g tank, need some ideas

With a GH of 6 want to stay away from live bearers and stick with soft water fish like tetras and or S. American Cichlids or other soft water asian fish like gourami. Depends what you want. Do you want 6-8 big fish, a 80-100 small tetras or a mix of medium cichlids with larger tetras? If smaller...

    Budget Lighting for a 55?

Look into 23 watt or 26 watt 6500K CFL bulbs. They are around 5 dollars each and can fit in a desk lamp with a clip on the back of tank or if the lamp is deep enough right on the glass. Desk lamps cost about 5 dollars as well. Each bulb provides around 1600 lumens.most plants need 20-30 watts/...

    11 Gallon Stocking + Lighting

Substrate plants need 30 PAR at substrate level. PAR substrate charts can be found on line or go to rotalabutterfly light calculator and plug in the specs.Or you could drop $300 on a PAR meter. Higher PAR levels are usually easier to obtain in smaller shallower tanks. Hope this helps.

Black Beard Algae Growing during my 20gallon cycle?

I use flourish comprehensive and easy green. As for root tabs i use aquarium concepts root tabs, they can be found on line. They have more potassium nitrogen then flourish tabs which have high amounts of calcium and sodium. Ive used the flourish tabs in the past i like the aquarium concepts...

    10 gallon stocking idea

Guppys and other live bearers are hard water fish and neons are soft water fish. 8 DGH isnt super hard but neons prefer it under 6. Plus neons need more length than a ten provide as they are a shoaling fish and need at least 2 feet to swim back and forth. Lots of nano species do well in 10 gal...

    Planted tank, algae, CO2

I wouldnt use excel. Its derived from a chemical sanitizer and isnt safe for fish and plants and is more likely to cause algae than deter it. Stick with the liquid fert and root tabs excel is a waste of money and will lead to more problems

Black Beard Algae Growing during my 20gallon cycle?

Id stop dosing excel. It claims to be a source of carbon but its derived from a chemical sanitizer. Its not healthy for fish or plants. Ditch the excel get a comprehensive liquid fert and some root tabs. Co2 is naturally occuring in tanks from the break down of organics in the substrate. Tom...

is this a good fert or a heavily planted tank?

NPK nitrogen phosphate and potassium are considered macro nutrients because thats what the hobby says plants use the most of, which im not sure is true, and then everything else is considered micro nutrients.im not sure if there is a general scientific consensus on this or not, seems every "...

    What plants for my lighting?

Depends on the fixture. T8 ,T5, CFL, LED,. Whatever you use you want it in between 400 700 nanometers which is mostly red and blues. - 6500k bulbs are considered full spectrum which claim to have all colors. If one is going the LED route then one wants a set up with more red and blue diodes than...

is this a good fert or a heavily planted tank?

I also use planted aquarium concepts, root tabs. They are 2$ a piece compared to 1$ a piece for the flourish tabs but they have more in them. Flourish tabs are mostly calcium and sodium neither of which my plants need a ton of, where as concepts root tabs are higher in nitrogen phosphate...

    Staghorn...

Maybe im not quite sure. Normally plants will take all the extra nutrients they can get. I know some people have noted that dosing iron has killed floating plants like frog bit and i onow that some have noted that if condensation from the hood drips onto salvinia it can melt it.
  33. U

    Staghorn...

All tanks will have natural CO2 in it from organics breaking down, so if one has a lot of organics in tank rotting food plant matter ect will create co2 which in excess cpuld lead to co2 but im not sure how much natural co2 in a tank leads to algae. Either way decreasing light and feeding...

    Help with Dwarf Sag

gotcha. Find the company of your light fixrure like finex or what ever or if youre using a bulb like cree or G.E and plug in the watts and lumens or whatever it asks and it should give you PAR and PAR at subatrate along with a few other measurements. Keep in mind its not perfect and is an estimate.

    Noob with a Big Tank

People keep lots of fish together they arent whats best for the fish. Staghorn...

Decrease lighting either intensity or frequency. Could go 7 hrs instead of 8. Also decrease freeding. If feeding twice a day go to once, if once a day go every other day. Tomm barr suggests leading cause of any algae is inconsistent or too much CO2. Algae is always a sign of a nutrient/ light...

Whats your favorite tetra and why?

Yup. When i get my big tank i want to fill it with a bunch of shoals of tetra. Neons, glo light, black neon, von rio, rummy nose, emperor, and they can all shoal around together with the rummynose leading the way;)

Whats your favorite tetra and why?

Black neons and glo lights in my opinion look really well together the colors really play off eachother and they do well together as well.
