Wow im jealous. My LFS display tank displays as many different kinds of algae and fungus one can think of. Id die to have a lfs with display tanks like that.

    Mistreating my crypts

Crypts are one of the plants i can seem to grow anywhere. Ive always had a lot of su cess with them in all types of substrates and tanks and would highly recommend them to anyway. I think they get a bad rep because they often melt and people think theyre dead and throw them out, and ive had...

    Second netrite snail death

Could be that your water parameters are super ideal for nerites. My olive nerites do well and my ramshorn do well ive had zero problems with MTS but for whatever reason when ever i buy tiger or zebra nerite they die after a couple months or weeks, so now i just stick with olive nerites.

    ADF’s are acting strange

First frogs shouldnt be kept with fish, especially large fish like mollies. Frogs are shy and have poor eyesight and use their noses to find food in or on the substrate which requires they have sand. Fish will out compete frogs for food and Not only will the food be lost in the cracks between...

    Medium sized fish suggestions

Bolivian Ram , apistograms, curviceps, some smaller geophagus, will all be fine with most tetras and all share similar water parameters as they are from the different or same areas of the amazon. But yeah nailing down the exact species of tetra would be helpful:)

    Second netrite snail death

Also a bigger cause than the PH is the low GH. I mis read it and thought it said 12 -22dgh not 12ppm. 12 dgh is hard water 12ppm-22ppm is 1dgh which is super low. Snails need calcium and magnesium in the water for shell development and with only 1dgh they wont get it. Id suggest raising the gh...

    Second netrite snail death

I think you are having a difficult time understanding how averages work. When someone says a neon has an average life span of ten years they come to that conclusion by observing how long populations in captivity live. Is it a perfect system? No but it gives one a general idea, same goes for...

    Second netrite snail death

Never said they werent hardy but the average lifespan of a nerite snail is around two years. That yours has lived longer isnt the rule its the exception. I have a cat hes 18 years old that doesnt mean the average lifespan of house cats is 18 years, its much lower, my cat is the exception not the...

    Second netrite snail death

Could have just been old age. Average life of a nerite is a year or two. I had one for 2 years once but most the time i have them for a little over a year then they move on to little snail heaven.

Love to see pics of your cinder block stand. What kind of wood are you using as the base between. When i get a bigger tank if it doesnt come with a stand im thinking of going the cinder block route, ive never done it and am curious how effective it is?

Sounds like the Angel Fish is the least of your problems.:(
  14. U

    Bullying problem

Angels and barbs should never be kept together as barbs are notorious fin nippers and angels are slow moving with long fins that make easy targets. Angel fish also belong in shoals of at least 5 which require at least a 100 gallon tank. Fish shoal for safety reasons and a lone angel in a tank...

    Feeling Defeated

Leading cause of disease in fish just like humans is stress. Eliminating stressors can minimize disease, stressed fish are more susceptible to disease. In your current tank with what you have said the leading stressor to your mollies/platys is the Angel fish. Angel fish are cichlids after all...

    200 gallon stocking ideas

Whats the GH? GH is general hardness of water. Some fish need hard water some need soft water. If you could nail down the GH of your water we could make suitable suggestions that match your water.

Schooling fish recommendations for 55 gallon tank.

Bolivian RAMs or Apistos with Corydora can be tricky as they all inhabit the bottom of the tank. Keeping bolivian RAms and apistos in groups can be tricky as well as when two pair off and breed they get very aggressive and territorial. If one is wanting shoaling fish id suggest a few different...

    African Dwarf Frog

Keeping ADF with fish you really miss out on their quirky behavior as the frogs will be shy and reclusive around fish. In a species only tank they are active and swimming and floating and out and about and one can even hear them chirp or croak. They may even have babies, with fish this fun...

    Beginner aquarium plants

Swords, crypts, Hygro, anubius, ferns. Plants feed 2 ways through roots and through shoots(leaves) and some consume more of a particular nutrient then others. Some like swords and crypts are heavy root feeders that feed around 70% from roots where as an anubius gets the majority of nutrientbfrom...

    Substrate??? Help, I need advice!

Pool filter sand is a silica sand and isnt as fine as play sand but its shape and composition keeps it from compacting like play sand. Ive used eco complete, soil, play sand, flourite, gravel, and pool filter sand. Currently im using black diamond blasting sand which is a bit smaller grain than...

Upgrading my 75 gallon tank (need help with lighting)

Carib sea eco complete ive used it will go nutrient dead after about a year and will need to be replaced. I just use sand now with root tabs so i dont have to replace the substrate. Those pre packaged substrates work well for a couple months but quickly exhaust their nutritive benefits and just...

Upgrading my 75 gallon tank (need help with lighting)

Root tabs will go along way especially if you have heavy root feeders like swords or crypts and carpeting plants. I use aquarium concepts root tabs they have a lot higher concentration of nutrients than other commercially available tabs like flourish tabs.

    Pulling the Trigger

If you are planning on having say 30 rummy id add 15 one time and 15 more a week later. Make sure you drip acclimate them, they are really sensitive to ph and gh changes and being moved, but once established are super hardy as long as they have clean soft acidic water.

    Pulling the Trigger

Ive never kept rasbora but theyd be fine with rummy as they share similar water parameters and have similar swimming styles and yes rasbora will be top middle. Black neons are also top middle.

    Pulling the Trigger

Yup rummy are mid lower and like i said they stay in really tight shoals. If you are wanting exclusive top swimmers than hatchet fish stay at the top the whole time. Marbled hatchets are my favorite looking. one needs a lid for them as they are really good jumpers but if one wants fish with more...

    Pulling the Trigger

Its not that the congos will be aggressive its just that congos are a lot more active fast swimming fish and should be kept with like tetras. Rummynose are slower swimmers and form tighter shoals than a lot of tetras thsy do well with other slow swimming tetras like neons glo light tetra emperor...

Ammonia level spiked crazy after water change

I subscribe to the KISS method, keep it stupid simple. Filter floss is really cheap and can be cut to fit any size filter and i dont have to recharge it or use any chemicals on it, i just take it out rinse it off in a bucket of tank water and put it back and replace it when it starts...

Question about placement of powerhead for co2

In theory one wants to place it where it will disribute the most amount of bubbles throughout your tank. Put the diffuser low in the tank and have the power head above it. Or one could also insert the CO2 line directly into the power head intake.
  34. U

    Pulling the Trigger

I wouldnt put congos and rummys together. Congos get pretty big and are a little to rowdy for the smaller slower rummy nose but id be interested to here how it worked if you did decide to go with both as both are just beautiful fish.

Ammonia level spiked crazy after water change

Basically its saying it traps particles that cause nitrates. Basically its an over priced sponge or piece of filter floss. The only way to remove nitrates from tank is by water change. Those particles that are trapped by the purigen remain in water column until the purigen is removed or rinsed...

Ammonia level spiked crazy after water change

Snake oil. Youll be better off just using a regular filter sponge and rinsing it in a bucket of tank water. The white stuff on it claims to trap ammonia, even if thats the case the water from ones tank runs through that sponge the only way to remove that " trapped" ammonia is by throwing the pad...

Ammonia level spiked crazy after water change

What is it and what does it claim to do? Any product that claims to remove or denitrify or neutralize ammonia is starving your biological filter. The only way to remove ammonia from the water is through water changes or breaking them down to nitrite then nitrate and removing them. If one uses a...

Ammonia level spiked crazy after water change

Ammonia level spiked crazy after water change

Im not sure whats in the ammo pad. If its whitish gravel looking stuff its ammo chips which will absorb ammo but dont break it down and need to be constantly changed. Any product that claims to remove ammonia from your tank is damaging the natural processes of your biological filter. I use...
